This exchange perfectly shows the fragmenting of TV and entertainment, and how niche it has become. Here's an award-winning show with three seasons under its belt, and there are millions of people who have not only not seen it, but they haven't even heard of it.
In the 80's and 90's, I might have never seen an episode of <renowned/highly-rated thing>, but I at least knew about it.

Half kidding. But on average I watch very few shows and that’s been true my whole life. I got around to GoT
this summer. Outside of a handful of cable dramas - The Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad - I haven’t watched hardly anything the last 20 years. More of a film and doc kind of guy.

Yeah I admit that I'm genuinely surprised that there are drafters here who haven't even heard of it. Haven't seen I get because of the need for Prime, but anecdotally this show was buzzing around a lot of my social and family circles (e.g. my mom and aunts think it's one of the best TV shows ever). And it won awards and in the time of #metoo it should have been a great example of a woman excelling (sort of) during a male-dominated time period.

OK, I checked the list multiple times to make sure this wasn’t taken since it’s crazy it’s still out there (I know Carson was taken a long time ago). Yo Mama selects:
13.16 - The Tonight Show - Live / Variety
Constantly listed highly in most all time rankings, The Tonight Show (Johnny Carson iteration particularly) set the standard for nightly talk shows. Carson also created the template for modern talk shows with his format of monologue, sketches, then guest interviews/musical appearances.
So many classic characters and moments - Carnac, Art Fern, “Here’s Johnny!”, stump the band with Doc, wild animals crawling all over Carson, and impeccable Reagan impersonations.
I had to learn how to program our huge clunky vcr for this show when I was too young to stay up late to catch this classic show.

Sort of a related story where "not everyone is aware of the same stuff" was driven home to me.
I was giving a speech in Toastmasters about how to play Fantasy Football. This was around 2010 / 2011, and I used Peyton Manning as an example of someone you'd draft. Out of 20 adults in the room, 4 had no idea who I was talking about. It stunned me, because I figured even non-football fans would at least know who he was. Nope. It really opened my eyes.

Going to place this in the decade category for now because her presence and impact was more than “just” her status as a mom, but might move her to TV mom depending on how my list shakes out. Yo Mama selects:
14.01 - Edith Bunker - 1971-1990 Lead Woman Comedy
Edith was a pure depiction of a wife and mother trying to hold together a traditional household in changing modern times. She was the buffer between her bigoted husband and her progressive daughter and son-in-law (and diverse neighbors). The credit Archie gets for his development as a character comes directly from Edith’s kindness and understanding.
Jean Stapleton was nominated for 8 emmys and won 3 for leading comedy actress for this role.
Side note: I used to do a mean Edith Bunker “Oh Ahchie!” impersonation back in the day. I even occasionally break it out golfing when I not-so-occasionally hit it into the bunker.

Question.. I have noticed true detective being placed on several rankings of best miniseries. I wouldn’t think anything with multiple seasons would be considered even if they are stand alone stories. Can I get a ruling on this? Thought?

FWIW, I think that since each season is a self-contained story and the characters change from one season to the next, it would be fair to allow it as a miniseries but only one specific season can be taken by the drafter. Since @tuffnutt cited season 1 as his favorite, I think it could be allowed that he amend his pick to that season but then each season after would be still be available for others to pick. For the record, I've only seen youtube clips of this show so I have no real stake in the issue, just wanted to offer a possible compromise.

That’s exactly what an anthology series is - or in some cases like “Twilight Zone” it changes from episode to episode.

Or if you had a child during the peak years. I actually found the show extremely funny watching it with my stepson while he was growing up. Everytime that Pirate would come on at the start and say “Aye Aye Kids..” he would always exclaim “yay”. It became almost Pavlovian as sometimes he’d be playing with toys and not really paying attention to the TV, but would still respond with his “yay”.

Keep in mind that the show's been on 21 years and was pretty much an instant hit. Spongebob's cultural penetration has been quite deep. Plenty of fully-fledged adults in 2020 who can say they grew up with the show.

Spongebob was awesome for adults IMHO. Lots of its humor would go over little kids' heads -- the show appealed to tykes on an entirely different level.

True Detective stories run across an entire season, while Twilight Zone or other anthologies wrap up the story in one or maybe two episodes of 30-60 minutes, not really enough to fit the definition of a miniseries, and it's different than story arcs within a larger show because it's still the same setting and characters.

Yeah I’m praising the pick. Massive impact and penetration. That show was IT for a whole generation of kids.

I don’t want to spotlight but there’s plenty of anthology series still on the air that have a total change of cast and storyline with each season.
Originally “Stranger Things” was slated to be a Anthology series but it was so popular Netflix didn’t want to mess with the success.

I don't know. Team GallStein was discussing that internally and wasn't sure how it would be addressed. That's why I asked the question hoping other's would chime in on how he would be scored and whether or not you had to pick one of his characters or if you got all of them. What say the masses?
