25.08 Jackass- Reality

" Hi I'm Johnny Knoxville and welcome to Jackass!"

Seven words that will ring in the ears of a generation of teenagers who grew up wanting to skate, listen to rock n roll and perform mad stunts, for eternity... a catchphrase still recognized some 20 years later.

Jackass was nothing short of a cultural phenomenon. A show that only lasted a mere 25 episodes over 3 season spawned  a video game, 3 movies and countless spinoffs. It started in October 2000 and after only its 2nd episode it became MTVs highest Sunday ratings ever. 4 moths later Johnny Knoxville was on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

not the first hidden camera or prank show, Jackass seemed to tap into something in Americas youth at the time. It was profoundly sophomoric material but we loved it. The best stunts allow an audience to vicariously experience things that human beings most wish to avoid—the imminent threat of death, grievous injury, mutilation, revulsion, humiliation. 

But perhaps what was best about Jackass was that it was just a bunch of friends goofing off trying to out gross each other, out prank each other, and out do each other, which was what my friends were like growing up.  The one thing you got from a reality show like jackass is you knew it was REAL.  Not scripted reality which all reality shows have become.

If my research is accurate, more awards than the already-taken Mary Beth Lacey.

Both were nominated for six consecutive emmys, but Lacey won 4 of those years to 2 for Cagney.

Gless was actually the third Cagney.  The first (Swit) was on the pilot but couldn’t get out of her MASH contract. The second had really short hair so the network was afraid people would think she was lesbian. 
 

 
Speaking of taking favorites, here are a couple of mine.  Yo Mama selects:

25.16 – The Addams Family – 50-70 Comedy

I may shift this to Paranormal depending on how the draft goes, but I think this is a better fit for now and could score well in this category.

This is a hard one not to spotlight, but this was a feature of my weekend (and after school) viewing growing up.  The iconic characters like [lots of redacting], the super-recognizable [redacted], the various crossovers to other shows like [redacted] – it’s legacy continues today.

26.01 – Jamie Sommers (The Bionic Woman) – 71-90 Leading Woman Drama

Total badass.  I need to pull the string on this pick now since she is the last of my Wonder Woman / Cagney / Bionic Woman tier for this category and not thrilled with anything else there.

I still remember the Christmas where I got a Six-Million Dollar Man lunchbox and my sister got a Bionic Woman one, and I have to admit I was a little jealous.  I loved this show.

Lindsey Wagner won an Emmy and a golden globe for this role.

NO idea how this lasted so long. Addams Family is 2nd only to Wizard of Oz as the media most responsible for who i am today. It gave me permission to be weird on a level that Bowie would serve for so many a decade later. aaaand it was a damsite more funny & charming than anything else on TV at the time

 
25.14: Roscoe P. Coltrane, 1971-1990 supporting man

Very different from his Roscoe character, actor James Best was actually a renowned acting coach in L.A. for over 25 years. He was teaching drama at Ole Miss when he auditioned for the role of Roscoe P. Coltrane.
 

26.03: Scrubs, 1991-2020 comedy

Scrubs was goofy, profound, and a key link in the evolution of TV comedy (AV Club, 10/10/2016)

Ita the opposite of reality so no way it should be #1.  It is 100% staged for the camera to increase their popularity.  It is terrible TV.
