Need some thoughts on this Jeep. Been thinking it's finally time to get a Jeep, been wanting one for awhile.

Would really prefer 4 door as we have two little ones as well (1 and 3). Would still keep our van as our daily family driver. This would be my car, but I'd like to be able to take them with me too.

I would personally refuse to buy anything from a business with a domain name that long....

Haha, well, domain name aside... thoughts?
I'll let icon speak to this particular one, but on the whole, I think you absolutely should get a 4 door. I was looking at some 2 doors initially, but also have 2 little ones, and decided I'd likely rarely ever use it if I couldn't take the whole family with me. 4 door is a whole lot easier to get everyone in and out and deal with all the kid stuff. No way would it ever get driven otherwise. Now it's almost become our "weekend driver," because it's the car I prefer to take out and get on the road on the weekends.

So, definitely get a 4 door. I also recommend you make sure you get power windows. A major PIA if the kids are crying about wanting windows up or down and you can't deal with that other than pulling over and getting out of the car to do it...

Thanks for the insight. It has power windows, 4 doors.

Asking 19k, was going to offer him 17.5. 2008 Unlimited Sahara with 86k miles. Does that price sound like a good deal. Been shopping for a bit and seems to have everything I'm looking for with relatively low miles at that price point.

Anything wrong with that particular model/year?

You should read up on this -- I know that the first year or two of the JK (so 2007-2008?) are criticized as being underpowered. My 2015 JK is no screamer, but it is the faster one. That's one thing to look into -- if you don't want a real slug, you might want to get something after that engine change was made.

Yes. If it doesn't have the pentastar engine in it, be prepared to have to fred flinstone the thing to out-accelerate the Le-Car next to you at the redlight.

Gotcha, so stick with year 2012s and newer?

The popular Pentastar V6 will soon improve yet another Chrysler product. Starting in 2012, the Jeep Wrangler and four-door Wrangler Unlimited will adopt the powerful engine, trading in their increasingly outdated 3.8-liter V6 for the technologically-advanced Pentastar.

I guess it depends on your tolerance for exceptionally sluggish vehicles. I'd say at LEAST drive one first...

Yah, of course. Going to test drive that 2008 this afternoon. My buddy has a 2007 but 2D and said he notices a lot of the 4D drivers complain about it being under powered.

I traded in that exact same Jeep (2008 Red Sahara 4D with 87K) last year in May for $17,500. That's a good number for it. But icon is completely right, if you can swing it, get 2012 or newer for the engine. It doesn't do much for the mileage, but the power difference is huge! (I traded mine in for a 2015 Willys 4D)

I sent this to GB Kutta but then realized it may have more global interest.

I've started becoming tempted by something like this:  Am I totally insane?

http://www.bruiserconversions.com/

30 grand to drop in a 480hp Corvette engine.... now we're talking....

Also, in trying to install a hi lift jack mount on my hood, I stripped one of those crappy torx bolts in the hood.  What a piece of crap those things are.  I spent hours last night in the dark in my garage trying to extract it with no luck.  I'll probably just go to the dealer and ask them to get it out as they laugh at me for being an idiot.

Just trying to get ready for sun and beach season.  We had a whiff of spring last week, can't wait to get the top off and start enjoying again.

OT

i saw a jeep today just wanted to keep you all up to date on swc jeepnews take that to the bank brojeepfans

Otis is the bolt recessed? or can you slot it with a dremel (mototool)?
It's in all the way, slightly recessed. Supposedly they loctite these things in before painting over them. :eyeroll: thanks Jeep. I got the other three off with elbow grease, this one broke two tools and stripped the torx at the top.

Super Glue solvent also works on Loctite. If you could get it down in there that should

help break the bolt free. Last resort would be to slot the head then use a flat blade that is

tougher then the bolt- but you could then break the bolt and not the tool. Heat would also

free up the Loctite but I wouldn't go there.

Took into the dealer to have them resolve the stripped bolt for me.  200 bucks later :hot:  and at least the problem is behind me...

Got the hi lift jack hood mounted and headed down to the beach for the first time today.  Was pretty stoked, had the girls in back and figured they would get a kick out of it -- not really beach weather, but still would have been fun to drive the beach and hang for a bit.

Except....

 OOF

Glad you got it fixed. No idea what torx bolt you're talking about but that sucks...

Quick FYI on HI-Lift Jack.. it'll be next to useless in the sand without something to place it on... I'd suggest throwing a 18"x18" (or so) piece of 3/4 plywood or some similar strong ### material to place in the sand under the hi-lift if you ever need to use it.

If you're stuck and un-winchable (nothing to hook to), you can always jack up the jeep, make sure everyone is out of the way, then push it so it falls forward/sideways on the jack (watching out for other folks and making sure the handle of the high-lift wont tilt into your body panel). Usually good to move you forward a foot or two if you've dug out a rut.

That looks great.  Biggest issue I'm going to have with one of these is my garage is only 9' tall, wonder if I'll have room.
You could. The way mine is set up, I back in to the garage to take the top off. That way the big portion of the top is toward the back of the garage and hangs just over the hood of the Jeep when I pull in forward. I would think it would work in a garage as low as 8 feet. You really don't need much space above it.

Anyone do the hardtop lift inside your garage?  Buddy of mine told me the hardtops are a pain in the ### to remove with your wife as the other person helping.

Recommended I get this so I can remove/store it myself.

Just installed this over the weekend.  Got it on Amazon Warehouse for $109.  Not too bad to install or take the roof off, but we only have a two door.  Our garage ceiling is very high so I had to modify where I put the anchor, but it all worked out.

I took the roof off and put it back on by myself.

You get that exact one I had linked? Or go with a different one? Any tips or instructions pretty straightforward.  Some of the reviews mention cutting the 2x4 longer then they recommend .

icon, do you have a CB radio mounted?  Others?

I really don't have a need for one, but in my military theme Jeep, and in my end of world scenario, it could possibly come in handy one day.  Thinking about doing one.

Can't install in the usual over mirror mount spot because I have an SPOD there.

Anyone have a CB radio?  Thoughts on where to mount?

TIA

Yes exact same - just an open box so it was cheaper on Amazon Warehouse.  Had the top off this past weekend.  I should have taken pics.  I'll try to do it this weekend if the weather cooperates.

Cobra 75 is a perfect jeep CB radio... Small box you can hide easily. then the handheld unit that can be connected/disconnected from the box as needed. Just mount the hand unit somewhere and good to go. They are invaluable when riding with a group on the trails, or in a convoy on highways. Not to mention the "#### hits the fan" type disaster functionality.

Toughest part of a CB install is getting a good antenna mounting job, and getting it peaked/tuned for best range / lowest noise. Might spend a couple bucks but totally worth it.

Have a new 4.0 6cyl being installed into my Wrangler over the last few weeks. Had been helping a buddy with design stuff for a couple years so called in a favor. $900 installed for a brand new crate engine ($3500 for engine alone, plus labor and fluids).

Everything is in and done... just trying to clean up a crank position sensor code and smooth it out a bit. Hoping to pick it up in the next week or so.

Still rollin' in my stock 4-door wrangler and loving every ####### open air minute of it.
I've got a 2 door Rubicon. Doors and top are off, and I've been getting out with it a lot. I LOVE driving it. I'm going to be bummed when it gets too hot here in the next few months and I have to put the top back on.

Back to topless for the summer.  Garaged on the crummy days, but this weekend was the first time this season that I was in town and the weather was glorious.  Just cruised this evening with a bit of a tan, having spent so much time in the sun the past two days after seeing none of it for 9 months, smoking a cigar and listening to music.  Glorious.

The only bummer is I mounted a hi lift jack, got a permit, and picked up some fishing poles, and was all ready to drive out on the local beach to do some surf casting and watch my girls play in the sand.  And it turns out the only beach with such privileges is closed indefinitely this season due to heavy erosion this winter. ####!~

Awesome! I got one of those Spider Tops so I have a little sun protection over my head. It's really great.

Also, I'll be in Manhattan May 15-19. Let's try to hook up again.

Just got a supplier deal from JCI one of the companies I rep.   Leased a 2016 Compass for 99.00 a month for 2 years..15K a year mile.. sign and drive.   Did not really want a Jeep but the price was too good to pass up.  Drove it all weekend and love it!  Seems almost as big as the Cherokee.  It had a 27K sticker so it is well equipped.

Am I missing something - $2400 to put 30,000 miles on a new car over two years?

No..all the auto manufacturers run program deals with the execs of suppliers like Johnson Controls...one of the companies who I do work for. At time none of them need a vehicle so  they pass it on to me as a contract employee.  It might be 10-20 vehicles available at this price or sometimes 50.  The vehicles they usually offer are the ones they have made too many of and need to move.  My last vehicle was a GMC Terrain that I got for 147.00 a month for 24 months 30K miles and I thought that was a great deal.  When they asked me if I was interested in the Compass I could not believe the price because I have never had a deal like this. Sticker is 27K...I prepaid it.  with plates it was a little over 2400.00

Anyone got an extra 97-06 Wrangler passenger side soft top door surround they don't need    When I bought my 97 last fall, I bought it before I knew it also came with the soft top.  When I picked it up the guy selling said he thought all the parts were there.  Not knowing what I was looking at, I assumed he was right.  Yesterday, without instructions and with a shoe box full of stuff, I was able to get the top on without the windows zipped in which I loved the look of. Unfortunately, I am missing the passenger side surround that looks like  this on the driver side.  I did text the seller and he looked and cannot find it.  From the label on the top its a Bestop and their website states they do not make a replacement for it.  Doing some Googling it looks like I could buy and use the factory surround so I can wrap it to hold the window in place and would need to add some Velcro at the top to match the way the Bestop one works.  Most eBay sellers are selling the factory surrounds in pairs.  So I need some help (as usual).  Can anyone think of a resource that may sell the Bestop surround?  I have no idea the age of the top, but its in good condition so its likely not as old as the Jeep.  If not, thoughts, other than eBay, on how to find just the passenger side factory surround.  I would do without it, but the side of the window will likely flap around if there is nothing to secure it to.  And finally, if anyone had a spare not tied to a current Jeep (wishful thinking) please IM if you are willing to sell it.

Here are some pics of the hoist.  Had the top off (####### out) this past weekend.

I had to cut the board due to the lights on the celing and put the "main" pully low on my front wall due to the storage on my front wall.

Haha... I don't think I've ever known anyone that had a jeep that, upon selling theirs, ends up wanting another one again.

Something about these damn things... Enjoy!

Have not picked up Jeep yet, already have $300 worth of stuff ordered and on the way.  This is normal, right?
Tip of the Iceberg.... totally normal. half the fun of jeeps is the absurdly robust aftermarket and customizability.   Just do some legwork or ask in here before spending any big money as there are a lot of crappy products folks regret buying....

Love the Willy's in that color... Enjoy!

anyone do any sweet rock crawls lately take that to the bank
So bummed! Was supposed to head to Crown King from Phoenix with my buddy and a cooler of beers and sandwiches last Saturday but I was a bit sick. We are planning to do it in the next couple weeks :kicksrock:
