Bought a 2016 Rubicon Unlimited last night. Hardest part was finding one with the specs I wanted. Automatic w/ 4.10 gears and black hard top and fenders. I wanted the dark gray but settled on a black one my dealer found in West Virginia. Now just have to wait for it to be driven to me in Cincinnati. Should be here Monday or Tuesday.

Still mulling over this. My wife likes the blue. I don't mind the blue but add in 4.10 gears, Unlimited Rubi, Nav and they are near impossible to find. There is a stock one down the street for 50k but.....

I've got a '14 unlimited Sahara altitude edition in the hydro blue pearl. Everyone that sees it falls in love.

Every once in a while I wish I'd started with a rubicon but the gears and lockers are for the more serious crawling. I've had mine on some serious trail rides and it's kept right up with the rubis. Mine is now lifted 2.5" with 35" tires and I absolutely love it.

What do the different gears do?
The bigger the tires the lower the gears. There are calculators online. By changing the gears it allows you to get your rpm back close to stock.

I am curious if you use a speedometer app and compare it to your dashboard.

I got a Rocky Ridge edition. It's lifted and has 35"s on it -- I assume they adjusted the gearing to match? (Or is that a bad assumption?)

On a spending binge in recent days. Amazon just has so much great stuff and I can't stop buying.

- today installed a remote start unit. Works great. Never really think it mattered much until I got one in our other car, and now love it. Always warm it up as I'm walking across the parking lot or getting the kids ready to go out. Will come in handy as we approach winter. This was pretty cheap and relatively easy, did take some internet research and time.

- also installed to upgraded Kicker speakers in the sound bar. Great value. You don't appreciate how crappy the stock speakers are until you remove them, not just based on the sound, but they're like magnets taped to paper. Awful.

Then I went on another Amazon shopping spree today:

- bought two more speakers to change out up front. These will be more of a PIA but I think it's worth it.

- bought LED headlights. Look sweet and get great reviews. Not cheap by the headlights on these things are pretty terrible and yellow and weak.

- splurged and bought a 50" LEd light bar and mounting bracket and two new led cubes for at the base of the windshield. Already have two on my bumper. Gonna be a light show!

- bought a switch column for hooking up all these light switches. I guess I'll move the one for the LEDs on the bumper to this column as well. (Rocky ridge mounted it just under the steering column). Not sure how easy it will be to run all these wires but what the heck.

In the future I really want to install parking sensors and/or a backup camera. Just haven't yet found a cheap enough and easy enough DIY option.

I also want to figure out how and where to mount the spare has can; bought one that just about matches the tank green and would look pretty cool. I don't expect to use it often, but would be good to have for when needed (eg like the gas station lines after Sandy; if I ever make an extended off-road trip).

I'm also looking at the new JW rear LED tail lights and an LEd read light for over the spare. Also considering some "reverse" LED lights for under the bumper facing backwards, for example for when backing up the driveway and into the garage.

That's it for now.

What's the latest with the jeeps, fellas?

Did you go with the $99 remote start from Amazon? If so that's the one I put in a while ago, and agreed it was easy to install and I use it every day.

I've been eyeing the rear LEDs also. I skipped LED for my headlights though and went with HID projectors - I still think that was some of the best money spent on the jeep.

Currently I'm working with a friend to custom fab some flat fenders and waiting on my ACE bumpers to show up. I couldn't resist ACE's black friday deals.

:hifive:

Yes, that's the remote start I installed. Well worth the hundred bucks to always get into a warmed up vehicle (or cooled down, as summer goes...).

I just installed the LED headlights -- I got these, though I think I got them a little cheaper from another Amazon seller: JW Speaker LED headlights. Took me about 30 minutes in the dark at night, really wasn't hard, although I scraped up a small part of my grill just under the headlights, which ticked me off a little.

But they look GREAT. I always hated not only the look of, but the OPERATION of the stock headlights. They were so dim, I often times found myself unable to tell whether they were on or night, or even tell the difference between on or off on lit roads. These are so much brighter. Not a cheap mod -- cost between 500 and 600 bucks -- but great utility and they look fantastic.

And now I am starting to think about the rear LEDs... but one thing at a time...

Next project will be installing the LED light bar and other LEDs when they come. One thing I'm really unsure about is some of the electrical systems, and in particular running the electrical in a way that will look clean so that they run to the switch column on the A pillar -- basically this is what I bought: link

I'm sure it's doable if I'm patient and do some reading and planning. We shall see.

Really enjoying this car more than I have enjoyed any car in many years.

They're pretty fun to tinker with, hence the insane aftermarket support.

Excited for the first Otis jeeping in a snowstorm post. :)

Forgot, did your rig have lockers, O?

Lockers

Probably don't have these -- mine is based on a Wrangler Sport as the stock model, unless the Rocky Ridge guys added it, which I don't recall reading. I guess I should check.

Not the end of the world but they can help w lot to avoid getting stuck. (Or unstuck)

The JKs have a nice brake lock differential that functions as a nice limited slip type functionality that will aid in traction.

I need to do something with the audio as well. I got the base system and it sucks. I would like to just do speakers and leave the rest stock. Seems most people like the Mopar Kicker swap (#77Kick10).

I was debating getting the Polk marine-grade speakers (db651s co-axial and/or db6501 components) just in case anything gets wet - it is a Jeep. Maybe I'll do those components up front and stick with the Kicker in the soundbar, since so many people seem to like the Kicker?

I would download a speedometer app and compare it. They make a little adapter that can correct it. It's not a difficult fix.

The '97 we bought back in late September is shaping up. My son finished the Plasti-Dip on the rims and I gave up on trying to install the new fender flares myself and had my back yard mechanic do it for me (the midwest rust caused most of the bolts and nutserts to have to be drilled out). The mechanic also did a fluid flush, reconditioned all the doors, installed a new battery, brakes and a few other items. The top needs to be painted, but I think this'll wait until spring as it came with a soft top too so we can get to this slowly over the summer. I haven't owned a stick since '08 and love having one again and the way this thing bounces and rocks (compared to my 2010) is fun. Not that I want a huge snow storm anytime soon, but when it comes it'll be a blast to get both Jeeps out in 4WD. Here is a shot taken just after the fender flares were installed (the 2010 is in the pic too (I am impressed with the Rugged Ridge quality): http://i.imgur.com/4rUIvLh.jpg

The kicker is cheap and an easy swap and good value. Really can't go wrong there.

My next major project will be a backup camera or sensors of some sort. I'm just too terrified about backing over someone, let alone the parking convenience issues. Still haven't seen a great cheap and easy solution on Amazon.

Did you get stuck?

True story here......

I was 15 and my dad just gave me his Jeep. I was following a buddy in some pretty bad rain. We turned at an intersection and I went into the ditch (Swampers and rain are a bad combo). I am freaking out as it is a fairly busy intersection. The nose was in the ditch and the water was up to the bottom of the steering column. Sat there for 10 minutes trying to figure out how we would pull it out when an old man pulled up and asked if we had tried 4wd. Duh.... We didn't think of that and it backed right out.

I know right.

Installed a 50" LED light bar, some windshield cubes, wired it all up with an SPOD. I can light up my entire block at night. It's ridiculous.

Going to install some LED rock lights underneath, because why not. Also, got my permit to drive out on the Long Island beaches this year. Along with that you need to air down and bring one of those tall jacks; got the jack, but the jack mount of course won't work with the beefy upgraded tire carrier I've got on back, so I need to figure out another way to mount the jack, but I'm considering getting an on board air compressor to make life easy.

Basically I can't stop adding and tinkering. Looking forward to drive out onto the beach this summer with the girls, and saddling up to the ocean for them to relax and play in the water, do a little surf casting, and relax.

Anyone have on-board air rigged up? There are a few that seem to be discussed on the various message boards. I don't want something heavy duty; just something so that I can air up from 15psi to 30psi when I'm leaving the beach, and without waiting more than 2-3 minutes per tire. I want one that is mounted under the hood, and that I can hook into my SPOD. TIA JEEPNERDS

Question about tires and rims. Through a friend of a friend that that knew I had a JK, I lucked into a set of these: http://www.aev-conversions.com/shop/products/wheels/jk-savegre-wheels-non-beadlock There are apparently defects, but I can only find signs on one of the 5 rims. I've tested and four of the rims fit my 2010 just fine with the 5th just slightly off. These rims are 17" whereas, the stock rims on mine are 18". I have just over 40,000 miles on my current tires and they still have a decent tread on them. My Jeep has stock everything including suspension. I'm thinking I could put more of a winter/off road tire on the new rims which would give me the ability to rotate tires. So, what should I be looking for in tires? With rims that are an inch smaller, do I need a larger tire to make up the difference (dumb question, but thought I'd ask) and how much tire can my stock suspension accommodate? Is Tire Rack the place to look for tires or are there other sites that are better?

Very cool! Yah beach/sand riding is fun. Drop down to 12-14psi and you'll be fine.

When getting a tall jack, get a HiLift brand, not a knockoff. Also be sure and practice with it... they can be tricky and VERY dangerous if you do something wrong. A hilift will be worthless on the beach without a wooden base, too.

OBA (on board air) is handy as hell. I don't have it because several buddies do.

Rock lights are fun, and very handy when rock crawling on night runs.

Check out VIAIR setups.. you'll want a compressor and a tank. The thank will help with longer fill up jobs (large tires from low PSI) without stressing the Compressor.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking as your post kinda rambles from defects to tire types and rim sizes and stuff, but I THINK you're trying to find winter/offroad tires for the rims.

For a winter tire you'll want to go with a mud terrain tire with large blocky tread and good gap between blocks to clear snow from them when needed. I would also suggest 12.5" wide tires for good floatation on snow when aired down. Thinner 10.5" tires will tend to sink in. There are contrary schools of thought on that (some like idea of sinking through for traction) but with you being stock hight, you'll rapidly start running into axle clearance issues.

I would keep the same outside diameter of what you have, but just adjust the inside diameter. (height x rim x width)

Example... if you're driving a 33x18x10.5, I would get a 33x17x12.5 for your off road / snow tire.

Yep. I tend to post without rereading what I've written while on conference calls for work, so I tend to ramble. You answered what I was looking for as far as the tire the rims could accommodate. The defect babble was more about the rims I received and that 4 of the are fully usable and I can just roll with the spare I have and keep it covered. Thanks.

Thanks. After chatting with the guy at airwerkz, looking at this:
