The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (5 Viewers)

I was Team “As The World Turns” 🌎
Pffft, my Grandma watched that one.
My Great Aunt Mildred watched all the CBS soaps. She called them "The Stories."

Not that they come up in conversation very often, but OH and I still jokingly call them "the stories."

I can see a dividing line forming here between the CBS people who watched Guiding Light and As the World Turns, and the NBC people who correctly watched Days of Our Lives or the ABC people who correctly watched General Hospital. The Young and the Restless must have been on PBS. ;)

The Dusty/Holden/Lily triangle was the bomb back then.
Dusty had eyes like a husky. This girl I worked with back in the 90s named two of her children Holden and Caleb after the Snyder boys on ATWT. She named another Quinton who was a character on GL.

I was ABC, all the way. My mom hooked me on AMC, OLTL and GH---I had a huge crush on Tina from OLTL in the early 80s (the Andrea Evans Tina).

That's a "come hither" look!

I was, of course, a John "Blackie" Stamos fan on General Hospital.

I just looked him up. He's 60 and still damn fine.

After all the talk of people knowing/not knowing the Falco version of "Der Kommissar," last night apparently OH was reading the thread and said, "I didn't know After the Fire did a version of Der Kommissar." I don't know how he managed to know only the German version.
If there is ANYONE who would only know the German version, it’s OH.

Omg, I just realized that instead of "Battle of the Bands," I should call two covers of the same song at the same slot "Who Wore It Best?" Please update your cheatsheets accordingly.

To synergize what is now a dual-topic thread, did anyone ever cover this?

I’ll see your GH and raise you one. :headbang:

I guess soap opera talk is better than dad jokes

I've watched bits of Days of Our Lives and General Hospital over the years. Mrs. Eephus used to be big on East Enders when we only had one TV.

OK, I've been thinking about how I collated data in the past, and as experienced M-aD-ders know, beginning with the two-point selections I would post information regarding how often a song or an artist had been previously selected. This time is more complicated since we have coverers and covereees, but I expect to show some data starting with the next selections showing how many times a song has been selected, how many different coverers, and something about how many times coverers/coverees have been selected. It's a lot, so I'll have to figure out what's meaningful to present (and suggestions are welcome).

You'll also recall that we had Deja Votes (songs chosen twice at the same ranking), and Menage-a-Falala-Trois (songs chosen three times at the same ranking), and whatever we called that one time when "Gimme Shelter" got 30 points from four different people. I don't expect to have many of those this time, but I'll still identify them as such when they arise.

Finally, we also had double-ups and triple-ups and such when an artist was selected at the same point, but with different songs. I'll call those Coverer double-ups, etc. this time. A new twist is that we will also have different songs of the same artist being covered - i.e., a coveree with more than one at the same spot. Those will be Coveree double-ups, etc.

A subset of the Coveree double-ups will be when the same song is selected at the same spot, but by different artists. I'm going to deem those a Battle of the Bands. We have our first one of those coming up tomorrow, and for a song that in a million years I wouldn't have guessed would be our first Battle of the Bands. Fun!

I'm sure this is all crystal clear, but as always, please PM shuke with any questions.

Do I have any action items?

I really need to get back into the habit of listening to music. I meant to listen to the playlist yesterday, but then accidentally let it keep slipping from my mind. Oh, well, fortunately there’s multiple days! Anyway, time again for the classic M-AD categories. Well, sort of. The “didn’t know” is currently readjusted to “hadn’t heard before”, to cover songs I know but versions I didn’t as well as completely new experiences.

Recognized by title alone: 18
Sounded familiar: 6
Didn’t Know: 10

Selected Favorites:
You’re No Good - Linda Ronstadt. This just missed my Last Five Out.
Funky Town - Pseudo Echo.
Obsession - Animotion
Der Kommissar - After the Fire

Hadn’t heard before, but liked
In My LIfe - Dave Matthews
Pai E Filho - Nara Leao
Gloomy Sunday - Peter Wolf
Misty Mountains - Peter Hollens

OK, not much time for one of my trademarked previews of tomorrow's lists, but here's just a little:

- As mentioned we have our first Who Wore It Better? !!! The song that will come up twice from two different artists is  I'll wait while everyone looks to see "could this be me?"

- As you know, we have two lists that comprise only songs from the same covered artist. We know that one is Abba. The other will become evident tomorrow. Will it be me, with Daniel Johnston? DrIanMalcolm with Bull Moose Jackson? All right, don't be dumb. But there are several artists that look like a good possibility here.

- We have a new cover of a song that was selected as a Last Five Out and almost made my top 31. And a coverer showing up already for the second time in the top 31, but for a different song. And some other stuff that I know will be fun.

Watch this space! Or wait, that other space, the one somewhere below this.

This sounds exciting.

I need to get out more.

My 2-pointer was a notable hit record (#9 UK, #13 US). There was another earlier cover of the same song that was not a US hit … a pretty interesting cover that I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone pick here.

I absolutely could not do the Luke and Laura thing. Balding, sad-sack Luke was just so not a ten. So unattractive.

Yeah, he was gross. That's why I was a Blackie girl. And Demi Moore!

He just played with The Beach Boys last summer at the Sea Hear Now Festival.

Yeah he’s been touring with The Beach Boys on and off for about 40 years. Even appeared in their “Kokomo” video many moons ago.

You're No Good – Linda Ronstadt (Dee Dee Warwick)
Anyway, there are a bazillion versions that have been done since and Linda's is the most famous. It kind of set the template for many of her later covers and is about as raw as she ever got (from a '70s SoCal perspective). The band is full of ringers and Ronstadt sings the hell out of it. I think it's the best vocal of her classic period.
Great song and great track to lead-off a great album. Heart Like a Wheel is one of my favorites from the 70s.

I love that album. Recently found a used LP version at my local record store and it sounds as sweet as ever.

Listened to the #31 round. Excluding my own song:

I already knew I liked these songs:
  • You're No Good – Linda Ronstadt (Dee Dee Warwick)
  • Venus - Bananarama (Shocking Blue)
  • Obsession - Animotion (Holly Knight & Michael Des Barres)
  • Baba O'Riley – Pearl Jam (The Who)
  • Susie Q – Creedence Clearwater Revival (Dale Hawkins)
  • The Sound Of Silence - Disturbed (Simon And Garfunkel)
  • Der Kommissar - After the Fire (Falco)
These are my favorites that are new to me:
  • Daydream In Blue - I Monster (Wallace Collection)
  • Way Down In the Hole - Blind Boys of Alabama (Tom Waits)
Still need to listen to the Youtube links. Great start!

I'm late on listening to playlist 1, but I did finish listening to the songs. I love You're No Good, and both versions of Whiskey River are (y). Susie Q, Der Kommisar, Venus, and Obsession covers I know well, and I like them all.

I enjoyed the HSAS version of Whiter Shade of Pale, which is probably my all time favorite song.
I also enjoyed Peter Wolf's version of Gloomy Sunday.
Daydream in Blue was new to me and I loved it.
I liked both PJ covers of It's OK and Baba O'Riley. Both versions were live and glimpses of why PJ has loyal concert followers.
A House is Not a Motel was really good, and new to me in general.
I wonder if Rod has heard the Revolting Cocks version of Do Ya Think I'm Sexy.
I dug that Apeman performance by Hayley Jane and the Primates. They look fun live.
I'm considering playing Misty Mountains for my cat Archie in his meditation room.
Way Down in the Hole will be added to my Sunday revival playlist.
I'm not familiar with Voulez Vous, but Boy George can sing.
Disturbed's version of The Sound of the Silence was good. I kept waiting for some electric guitars to suddenly burst out, but they kept it tame.
I hope being a big fan of 99 Problems isn't going to give me 99 problems.
Joan Jett is the perfect artist for covering Dirty Deeds.
Mozambique has Jimmy and Emmylou in it, so I knew I'd like it.
Big Ten Inch Record is a swinging good time.
Jealous Guy is a really nice cover.
I like Huey's lively cover of Hank's Honky Tonk Blues. I especially love the rolling piano part.
Mama Said Knock You Out made me hold on tightly to my cross necklace.
I've never heard a bad cover of Don't Leave Me This Way.
Working in the Coal Mine is cool.
I like this guitar driven version of Smooth Criminal, and they can even get as high pitched as Michael on the Woos!
Don is challenging me once again with song titles I have to keep looking at to spell. Pai E Filho is perty.
Superwoman is super good.
I think I like this version of Funky Town better than the original.
Neil's All Along the Watchtower cover is all about the 🎸 for me.
Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Your Grievances is a good way to start the day.
