The Next 100 best movies from the 80's (2 Viewers)

Some of 16 Candles is uncomfortable to watch now but it’s very well-written and memorable.
Hard to believe there was a time in our lives when high school movies included scenes of gratuitous nudity. The world used to be a different place.
Yep. It’s not even that which I was referring to. It’s Farmer Ted committing what we now call date rape and some of the stuff with the Japanese exchange student seems kind of racist by today’s standards. (But I like that they showed he wanted to have fun just like the American teenagers.)

I think everybody knows I'm not particularly politically correct. This is very true. It's just flat-out racist and uncomfortable for me to watch.

I still think the movie is a worthy one.
Agreed. I would not “throw the baby out with the bath water” on this one, but I would not show it to my kid either.

Poor Gedde Watanabe. Up until several years ago his performance was beloved by audiences from all over. Now it's viewed as racist. He was asked about this a few years back and said something to the effect of he wasn't trying to offend anyone. He just wanted to make people laugh. Who was offended by his character/performance when the movie came out up until 30 years after it came out. Nobody. Now he gets lambasted on twitter by kids whose parents were children when the movie came out.

I think this is the turning point in the list. From here on out, all the picks should be fairly appreciated except for a few random ones.
I think the random ones are mine. Or at least two of them are and they are coming up soon. If I'm not in front of my computer just be reassured I have really good reasons for including them and will post judtifications. :scared:

Yet another reason why Twitter is a cesspool.

That's sad. I think he should get a pass. He wasn't in control of the creative content and probably didn't see the harm in the humor. That's where the zeal can lead, though. Sad all around.
What was the harm in the humor? He played an introverted exchange student in the 80's who gets drunk for the first time.

His name is Long Duk Dong and they play a Chinese gong as his lietmotif. He's also very stereotypically Asian in a way that makes fun of the culture and speech.

Immigrants have been played for laughs for a long time in many cultures. It'll pass. Nobody died from it. I hardly support the reaction. I'm the wrong tree to bark up if you're looking to find somebody who sees eye to eye with Twitter loons.

Already saw some hate for this earlier in the thread. You can't say this is a bad film adaption, since King directed it. Love the AC/DC soundtrack.
Another one that has aged….horribly.

And I am a huge 80’s Horror buff….but this was weak. The rewatch ability is extremely low.

explains why I haven't seen it available on cable for over a decade.

Yeah he’s not the one who should be getting **** for that. What other roles was he supposed to take?

My Japanese family members would strongly disagree that nobody had an issue until recently.

Introduced this to the kids recently, it still holds up. Anthony Michael Hall makes this movie.

about right....might have cracked my top 100. Shout out to young John Cusack. The nerds at the dance is definitely the best part of this movie. And of course the nude shower scene with hot chick.
TAKE those riDICulous things OFF!!!!

The absolute worst. It’s the arm pit of our country which was previously Newark New Jersey

nah ... Newark has quite a bit to offer outside the armpit moniker - now CAMDEN (or Irvington) would be more fitting.

(all three better than Gary, Ind or East St. Louis, tho)

"Yeah, but, the thing is, I'm kinda like the leader, you know? Kinda like the king of the dipshits."
That's why he was so great. Yah he was the nerd around the cool kids, but being the worldly alpha among the nerds was even funnier.
the alpha nerd is a great schtick

I didn't have this anywhere near my list, but it does hold a fond memory for me. First time I ever got high was at a sleepover at a buddy's house in 9th grade, and we watched this.
Underrated harmless flick.

Chainsaw and Dave’s reenactment of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Courtney Thorne-Smith ❤️

The guy that was in the bathroom for 6 weeks scoring a 91 on the test.

Good stuff 👍

“Six weeks ago, I thought he had the IQ of a salad bar. His only interest in life was to make people sick. If my mother came to dinner, he would give the dog a third eye or an extra leg. Because of him, we stopped having kids”

The wife and I almost boyst into tears.

Some of these movies are really top 200 of the decade? Come on. Top 200 of the decade basically means it's basically a top 20 movie for the year it was released. Change the thread title to "movies I saw and enjoyed" at least. smh.

Great contribution to the thread. Keep it coming.

hey, give the guy a break - he was in Golden Plane.
Gung Ho!

I loved Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom (we better be seeing this one in the list!) and remember wanting to see that one in the theater.

Another inexcusable omission from the other lists. What an incredible musical cast.
Deserves inclusion just for the church scene. I mean, James Brown as the preacher?? Perfection.

Not to mention Aretha in the diner.

Some rankers have some explaining to do.
This is one of my favorites of all-time.

Was this the first of the SNL spinoff movies or did they use the show to market the movie?
