The next "civil war" - A Liberal backlash against the conservative backlash? (1 Viewer)

This is such an odd thread. Never in the 20th Century did Republicans have such strongholds at the state, federal, and municipal levels, yet we're talking about a "backlash." It won't be a backlash, if anything, it'll be a demographic correction that makes utter sense.

It's weird. I guess I get it. At what point do the Millenials and Gen Z fully discard the shibboleths and get on with themselves? But still. It would seem that exurbs and the types of towns we're living in get more conservative by the year, and quickly, from what I've seen.

Or it could be that enough concerned citizens remain silent while they see trash culture rise to the fore, and keep voting in the opposite direction, all while telling the journalism students that they can f right off.

eta* I doubt that last part. We'll see a correction, like we always do.

I think hillary's just the absolute definition of a pathological liar. She is unable to speak longer than 30 seconds without lying. The fact is she lost because she’s a criminal and the fact that her extreme arrogance caused her to sit on her fat cankle supported ### rather than campaign while Trump was out there every day, sometimes holding 4 rallies a day. She thought she would win easily and would be coronated. She even had fireworks planned election night, anyone remember that? And if she won you can bet the left would have gone even further with TV shows celebrating her coronation, Broadway shows, movies about her life, oh yes and the school children singing songs about her as they did with Barry.

There are many reasons I would never vote for HRC, even if she were the most conservative candidate on the planet.

She lives with and raised her child with a rapist. She is nothing compared to the women here and elsewhere who would never even consider it, even if it meant living in the lap of luxury.

She put her political career above her child and herself.  She is a sellout.

Why would the conservatives want to take and hold Compton?  I thought the point was to force the wealthy liberals to pay their taxes?  That means Hollywood and Silicon Valley, not Compton.
Compton has got large streets (Long Beach Blvd, Alameda, Compton) with tons of industrial and retail value. Plus it's vital to shipping  transports into the state (via Long Beach and the Alemeda Corridor). Control of Compton is essential to control of the ports of San Pedro and Long Beach.

As the country gets more and more educated and the boomers die off this won't be an issue any more.

Conservatism will have to pivot left.

And I don't mean you @Henry Ford, you're one cool Mississippian liberal-leaning boomer.
Big problem with your theory. The US is getting dumber. Sure there are people who are getting more educated but the dumbest citizens are pumping out humanoids faster than the educated people. The ones they pump out are dumber than they are.

If you want a real eye opener just dissolve the Federal Government.

This election was the culmination of the conservative backlash to progress made on any number of issues that offended their sensibilities while simultaneously overlooking legitimate concerns of the declining (white and non-urban) middle class.

That said, the popular vote was clearly in favor of the electoral loser.

At the state level, you have near 50-50 purple states dominated by Red legislatures.

Both of these results, especially the latter, demonstrate a disconnect with the majority will of the populace and the makeup of the governmental bodies that represent them.

Finally, both of the above results are a clear result of a very successful strategy to deny Dem blocks from voting... be it gerrymandering or prohibitively discriminatory voter ID regulations (called out by the courts, but too late to remedy before the last election).

The Supreme Court seems as partisan as ever, as does much of an overly polorized and politicised DC, even by the swamps illustrious standards.

Finally the Republicans lack of caring for anything but their own selfish interests coupled with the Dems utter malfeasance has led to Gorsuch now being names to the Court. It's quite possible 2 and possibly three even more conservative (and beholden to one party) judges are named in the coming years... all the while all demographics show the nation moving somewhat left on many issues... including the very issues that are at risk of going anachronistically backward in terms of progress through policy.  Finally, we may soon have a court that has as much disregard for the individual including their right to vote so long as it serves a political purpose.

ALL these factors could coalesce to move the nation's legislation and government even further to the right while the nation's likely moves somewhat left at least on many social issues.

SO... what happens in the perfect Conservative storm? What happens if/when more actions are taken to disenfranchise minorities, the poor and those on the left and very left of the spectrum? When corporations continue to obliterate the rights of the individuals, the environment etc?

For a decade we've heard the cries of the south, the soft rural middle and other bastions of conservative thinking threaten to secede, how the country no longer represents their views. It was hollow rhetoric but strong nonetheless.

So now those voices hold control and may very well expand that grip on power expansively in the coming decade. All the while representing an even smaller majority of Americans than they Do today.

Anti-city and pro rural fights will be slanted all the more to the latter not only within 50-50 states like NC but perhaps the nation.

At what point does the entire North East corridor and West Coast, with huge urban centrers that provide a vast majority of productivity and economic activity as compared with their rural brethren, say #### this ####.  It's bad enough NY for example sends multitudes on taxes more to the Fed govt than it receives back. Now you may have a fed govt that forces MORE restrictions on these liberal areas that are the absolute key economic base and powerhouse of our nation, all the moreso with a world economy more and more based on the knowledge worker and high skilled manufacturing?

Could we see 20 years down the road NY, CA and other states just say #### this ####... we are no longer going to financially support a nation that not only doesn't support us but takes continual active measures to infringe on our local governance while simultaneously harming economic competitiveness?

LETS PLAY THIS OUT:

The Northeast and west coast states band together and withhold all payments to the Feds. Totally cut the Feds off. Don't declare a secession but just say we won't support those who in turn use those resources to not only not tend to our needs but actively harm the local preferred way of living and even moreso perhaps, urban economies?

Do you think the Feds will send in the guards? Literally... what would the end game be. What if residents on these states had just too much and were willing to fight and die to protect their FREEDOM (it's how our nation was founded , let's not pretend it could never happen again)?

Seriously.. if the ruling class is more and more conservative while the nation progresses along expected trends with millennials and more diverse populations, when does that divide become so stark a step to force action by states to protect their residents, way of life, and economy?

maybe this sounds ridiculous, but a true some point enough could be enough. Why not just hand together and withhold funds and let the "states rights" crowd look to what... invade?

Seriously could there be at least an economic civil war and how might that look and what might the reprucussions be for the nation as a whole?

I'll take some callers on the subject...

Right... Left... whatever. I just want representatives that have a fricken brain and work for the good of all the people of this country. So tired of the portal of everything being partisan. But to answer your question, I don't think your scenario is real. People opposed to Trump's policies are becoming very active and vocal. There is a lot of grassroots stuff happening around the country now, such as the town hall meetings. The expression of dissatisfaction is having an effect moderate Republicans to not follow the extremist.

Well for one, us Kentucky rubes would be nettin' a mighty load o gold for ourselves while the rest of the nation would be bankin' & backin' on pizza and pastrami...amirite @Koya?
Kentucky - highest per capita enrollment in the ACA.
F'N A baby!

For all the talk of us be'in all red and #### (which we are nationally), until the 2016 election :( , our state legislature had been in Democratic control for 95 years straight!

Our Dem Gov did the medicaid expansion and set up a program that was held up as a national example of success.

Unfortunately, with the red wave of '16, our new Guvna Idiot has decided to demolish it the best he can.

Finally, I hope you do not take me seriously about the dissolving the federal government; I'm just having fun playing the imagination game here. ;)

Guys with man buns, Dwayne Wayne wannabes, and the Lena Durham types vs. grown up frat boys, Duck Dynasty dudes, and Mama June's.

I'd put the odds at 6:1 blue beats red in hand to hand civil war.

Ports?  Stop being silly.  One '90s era destroyer and the port is controlled.  You have the mistaken idea that the government would need to govern.  Not in this scenario.  All the government needs to do is confiscate wealth.

Actually, as a more serious answer to the original question, the government would have no need for arms or fighting.  The government would simply turn the CIA and NSA hackers loose, shut down the offenders' internet and freeze all bank and other accounts.  End of insurrection.

i recall January of 81, sitting in seventh grade social studies class on the day of Reagan's inauguration ... our 'teacher' was a relic hippie broad, who was always a tad eccentric, but on this day she showed us unhinged - launching into vitriolic fervor about how John Anderson was a C.I.A. plant who was inserted into the race to steal votes from Carter, and prevented the incumbent from winning.

she always had her hair up in a bun, but on this day she let it down (never much of a looker, think Leatherface in his clown/makeup mask) and, man, was it ratty ... it was then that she attacked the chalkboard, and wrote 'INSANE ANGLO WARLORD: about a dozen times (anagram of Ronald Wilson Reagan) - practically in tears telling us that him and Falwell were in cahoots to bring the 'End of Days' through total nuclear obliteration.

our only hope, she declared, was severe social insurrection, or else 'we will never see a liberal/Democrat ever elected again, and our country will devolve into a hard right religious prison'  - not exactly verbatim here, but pretty damn close ... will never forget all the hand wringin' and looney toon #### that swirled about ol' Ronnie's presidency.

how we  doin'?
Damn.  I imagine the school board had a field day with complaints about politicization in the classroom on this one.

Fairly safe bet - just like in the American Civil War the blue states would have the industry to effectively choke out the red states. Can't underestimate the visceral hatred from blue and the overwhelming advantages in production capability.

Any good military analyst knows that if you stop the bloggers you have cut off the blue states supply line...

nah, not back in those days - and we honestly didn't give a #### enough to be troubled by it ...

we were all too familiar with her shtick, and laughed her off for the most part   curious thing was that she actually liked Nixon (calling him the smartest politician in our country's history), and felt Ford was right in extending the pardon ... but she always balanced herself out with #### like calling Arafat the Abe Lincoln of the Middle East

plus, she was the 'cool' teacher, inasmuch that she would let us bring albums to class on Friday afternoons (and she let us crank the crap outta them) , and she took us on quite a few unique field trips (best was a tour of the Chelsea Hotel).

when she stuck to the text, she was decent, but when she went off on her tangents we paid her very little mind.
