That's the "ball in play" number and I wouldn't be surprised if it was lessTo be fair, it appears Joe completely misunderstood the question, then answered something he wasn’t asked.I wanted to help jB on this one with some hard evidence that even if the level of play were slightly off, the home viewership is thru the roof
If you sat down and did the math, how much actual football are we watching?
Watching as much as I always have. And the quality is even better. That's what I'm saying.

Q: If you sat down and did the math, how much actual football are we watching?
The question is regarding the actual amount of time during a ~3 hour game there’s football things happening on the field, not how much time Joe, personally, is watching football.
I’ve read that there are only about 15-20 mins of live game-play during an average NFL game. But it’s so bloated due to penalties, challenges, injuries, and the worst culprit, commercial time-outs.

I’m 99.999% certain that was the point @cdclopper was making.
That's not much of a stance. I'll gladly take commercials over jersey logos while it lasts.Well before long youre going to have both. Its already in the NBA. And why shouldnt you want the NFL owners to tap into this additional revenue opportunity so they can make even more money. You talk that big game but, throw a couple Exxon and Mattress Plus+ logos on your precious 'niner throwback jerseys and see how it feels. You'll get used to it, of course but, IMO, looking at ads crashing into each other for, however long a commercial free game would take, is worse than regular bathroom and feeding breaks. There’s a reason I don’t often read CBS articles.Your poor taste in clothing is exceeded only by your poor taste in jokesAnything looks better than the Orange Crush unis.Ditto Broncos' throwbacks
I’d rather see an ad for whale’s vagina extract than have to gave upon that abomination.

The best uni ever was the Chargers powder blues with the lightning strip up the side.
The next best is the 49ers 1994 throwback.
Raiders white with silver letters/numbers a close 3rd.
Somewhere down around 47, among the CFL and Arena league jerseys, but just a smidge above the Any Given Sunday “couldn’t work out a licensing deal with the NFL” unis, that’s where you’ll fine the Orange Crush.
Tampa Bay’s creamsicle uni with the gay pirate is dead last. The Pats OG unis with the patriot in the 3 point stance 2nd to last.

There are 60 minutes of actual football. Or are we now complaining about the game clock, calling plays in, pre snap reads and QB cadence?
Is it time for the feats of strength?Man, everyday is Festivus around here.
It might be a bigger sport than football. Now if only we could figure out how to monetize it.

I don't think that's correct. It's, roughly a 180 minute broadcast and 60 minutes of game time. That's 120 minutes away from the field and 60 minutes on the field, or 2:1.No, ball in play. For ball in play it's worse than 2:1. Roughly 120 minutes of non-football (can't forget booth time, clock stoppages inside 2 minutes etc) and, let's say 12 minutes of ball in play which is 10:1.
Then you have to consider halftime. Should we include those commercials and studio time in this calculation?
Should we include the, roughly, 48 minutes of live football when the ball is not in play?
Yep - we had Niners season tickets when I was a kid up until like 1983 when they became so valuable my pops sold em. As a kid I distinctly recall the commercial time-outs being the most annoying thing - freezing our butts off at Candlestick while everyone stood around kicking grass. To be fair, it appears Joe completely misunderstood the question, then answered something he wasn’t asked.I wanted to help jB on this one with some hard evidence that even if the level of play were slightly off, the home viewership is thru the roof

The worst culprit could also be the 40 second play clock. If a typical NFL play lasts 4-5 seconds, that's a 1-10 ratio of action v standing around, other than in hurry-up/no-huddle situations. But yeah, with commercials and other play stoppages, I'd be very surprised to get 20 minutes of live action in a typical 3 hour game. We're used to the flow of the game as spectators and don't notice it that much, especially with good television announcers to keep us entertained with watching replays and talking points in the down time. The live experience is different - the stoppages are much more annoying.
Definitely with the big contracts. There is a shift in power this year, a product of the cap catching up to veteran teams.I have watched game pass NFL plus for so long and ...not so into it this year.
Quarterback play has been awful more often than not
Just seems longer when watching the current quality of play. So, haven't football broadcasts been 3 hours since, forever?
Sarcasm detector overload.Just seems longer when watching the current quality of play. So, haven't football broadcasts been 3 hours since, forever?
Let's pretend for a moment that the 'yeah yeah, everything was better back in the day' isn't the argument ender some seem to think it is. Obviously, it clearly is; it cannot be argued against, and has constituted the entirety of the NFL is Grrrrrreat argument in this thread. So it's clearly a devastating knockout blow.Sarcasm detector overload.Just seems longer when watching the current quality of play. So, haven't football broadcasts been 3 hours since, forever?
How well does high level soccer play work in the US? I know more people watch than once did, but it's not as much as, idk NASCAR or something, here. There's a reason I mentioned America, our society is built for commercial time outs.I just pointed out a sports league that has more viewership and virtually no commercials. Therefore it is realistic. It's a matter of what ppl will tolerate. So yeah, then fans excuse these NFL owners, who make their product worse for us so they can get rich. Fans even encourage it, are proud of it even. "Look how much money they are making!" The rich NFL owners aren't entirely to blame it seems.I think it's less about making excuses and more about you not being realistic. Find me a segment of American society that people aren't trying to make the largest profit off of. This isn't an NFL specific issue. Why are you making excuses for these old greedy men? You're even celebrating this, taking pride in it. I don't know what else to tell you. Enjoy your commercials sometimes interupted by football.reportedThe premier league has the most viewership worldwide, yet their product has commercials only during halftime.Ads are primary revenue streams. What alternatives would you suggest to make it not be this way?I do watch steelers games but flip to other games during commercials. It's astonishing how often the other games are on commercial at the same time. I dont watch the other teams anymore.IIRC there have been multiple analyses about this and, I think there is something like 10-12 minutes of actual plays run during a 60 minute game. But, that is probably reasonably consistent over the years. It's amazing to see the skill of some of these skateboarding guys and motocross racing too going over those big jumps and what-not. It's kind of cool to see them do this stuff but I'm not going out of my way to watch it either. I certainly wouldn't sit thru 2 hours of commercials to watch a 60 minute event. When I say I don't understand when people say the league is horrible, it's stuff like this.
The skill and athleticism continue to rise. It's amazing.
If you sat down and did the math, how much actual football are we watching? Because it seems to me most of the time we are either watching ads or listening to the announcers talk in between plays.
Do you still watch NFL games?
Have they done studies about how much comercials we watch during a game? This is unbearable for me. It doesnt have to be this way and it's not ok with me.
I've been watching a lot more Premier League lately. I'm deciding not to be the NFL's sucker anymore.
So what's the alternative? Just don't fkn have them comercials. Be less American I guess.
NFL $22 billion revenue in 2024
Premier League $8 billion revenue in 2024
Euros suck at money.
FTR I would love some kind of ad free subscription tier for the NFL but, it doesn't really lend itself to the product.![]()

Agreed. Kansas City has become painful to watch. This might be the worst year of the NFL I have ever seen.
Awful football.

Not really. When this thread was made, the Chiefs were 4-3 and it pretty much looked like a typical start for KC. Their playoff hopes werent really in question at all yet.

Is this the Josh Gordon thread?in layman's terms, what rockaction is obviously trying to say is, despite the Chiefs being at 4-3, OP knew this was the end of the dynasty. as did anyone who watched the league.
even simpler put, SF3 was correct in his observation.
Great ending but, the Falcons were playing the Bucs and the Refs. 19 penalties for 125 yards and the Bucs had 4 for 25.Are you not entertained?
That was a good one tonight.

disagree...I watched that game. Atlanta EARNED those flags. Most were blatant and had to be called .I don't remember a single individual (penalty) call being all that controversial. Sometimes, teams just foul a lot.Great ending but, the Falcons were playing the Bucs and the Refs. 19 penalties for 125 yards and the Bucs had 4 for 25.Are you not entertained?

No conspiracy, just pointing out the Falcons played with a ton of heart and refused to quit.
But, that many penalties lends credence to the "NFL is Horrible (but we loves it and never, ever try to takes it away from us)" crowd.
Is there some sloppy play? Yes. There are teams in transition. There are teams who continue to have crappy front offices. Still a waaaay better product than college, and that will not change. The NFL is continual arms race, with parity. The league is built on that. College is literally all about how much money you can spend on coaches and players. It’s not sustainable.Great ending but, the Falcons were playing the Bucs and the Refs. 19 penalties for 125 yards and the Bucs had 4 for 25.Are you not entertained?
