So 6 months ago we had a warm spell and my ac would not cool. Called a guy out and was told I was low on freon and that he suspected a leak on my inside coil. He added some freon and some sealant which he said May or May not do the trick.

Fast forward to a month ago. AC starts blowing room temp air. I check all of the things I know to check and notice the outside fan is not turning continuously. Call a dude out and he added 2# of freon and changed the fan and capacitor. All is well.

Today I get home and it's blowing warmer than normal air again. I have it set to 78 during the day and to drop to 74 when I get home. I shoot the register with a laser thermometer and it's blowing 71. Now a few hours later it's blowing 65 with my ac set at 72. Too me it should be blowing colder than 65 correct?

Tldr: my AC sucks.

Adding freon is SUCH A HACK JOB by whoever that was. never call them back.

if you're low on freon, it's 100% due to a leak in the coil. youll always be low on freon if there is a leak. by the sounds of it, it's a hell of a leak.

for giggles: my new unit takes 3.2pounds of freon.. but even a small leak (a few ounces) in that will cause the unit to NOT blow real cold air.

THEY HAVE TO REPLACE THE DAMN COIL. Sorry, but it infuriates me when they half ### the job, cost the customer tons of money and dont fix the issue.

do me a favour, does it sound like your unit is "running water"... as in... sounds like a faucet is turned on? surefire way to know youre low on coolant, and the unit is "sucking air"

----------------------------------

lastly - your a/c doesnt blow air at whatever temp you set on a thermostat... it will generally blows air at about 15-20 degrees colder that the air is outside. if your thermo is set to 72, it doesnt blow 72 degree air... it blows cold air until your house reaches 72.

eta: im not an hvac repair man, but have one in the family... and the amount he talks about it, I feel like I know too much for something i dont care about

You need a new coil, there's a leak in the coil.

Coil might be fine. Could be a loose fitting or maybe something rubbed a hole in the copper tubing. Find a professional to find & repair the leak.

Look for oil. That's where the leak is.

Pretty much this.

AC systems don't use freon like a car uses gas. It's a closed system. So if people keep adding freon, there IS a leak. And most of the time it's in the indoor coil. It's gonna cost you anywhere from $800-$1200 to replace it.

Edit to add: what city are you in? I may have a client (HVAC company) in your area.

I should throw in that my 2 year old unit had to have it's coil replaced... the unit itself (York) is fantastci, btu the coil manufacturer the year I bought my unit stunk.

they replaced it (free, of course... 10yr warranty) and they changed manufacturers. Thanks god for warranties, as it would be well over $1000 to replace/repair.

Good luck dude... and you wont see the leak... 95% sure it'll be in the furnace housing, inside the coil

I just had my A/C unit "serviced" because the outside unit wasn't turning on. $800 and 10lbs of freon later we are "good." Have I been taken?

I have a York LX Series YJF - 14.5 Seer, 2 or 3 ton (I cant remember which... Im at work) and it only took 3 pounds 2 oz of R-410A freon refrigerant, from STOCK, post replacement.

10 effing pounds????

Yeah I am fairly certain it's the indoor coil. The best part is I have a baby due any day now and my wife is beyond happy about this.

hey brohan if it will help just tell your wife that the brewers just tied it up take that to the bank brohan

Did some research on some local forums about ac recommendations. Went with a company that everybody had great things to say about.

Guy came out and was really knowledgable and explained everything he was doing.

Bottom line inside coil needs to replaced. How bad am I getting raked over the coals....$2400. Side note in that we had a baby on Thursday so I didn't really have time to shop around.

$2400?

Oh, hell no.

What kind of unit do you have? Post the specs. You can get a brand new ####### unit (ac+coil) installed for like 3500-4000.

I believe I mentioned it earlier... but a new coil is usually around 500-700$ install is about 2 hours. 1000 or a little over is fine. $2400 is criminal
