The Return of the Desert Island Jukebox Draft - Drop in a quarter (1 Viewer)

I got my hair cut for the first time in four months today. I had to go to a new person, because my usual hairdresser quit the beauty parlor.  She actually used to own it, but sold it a long time ago, and just worked there a couple days a week. She decided during the pandemic she was going to work strictly from home now. She lives about 30 minutes away, so I wanted to go to someone closer. A friend of my sister recommended a girl she likes. My sister went to her last week, and I went to her today. I have a few highlights in my hair, and I wanted her to darken  them some.  Turn them into lowlights I guess, and be nearer to my natural color. Well, she did just a few, and she cut my hair. I told her that my left side looked longer than my right side. I also asked her if those lowlights looked a bit dark orange. She said no. I don't know bout that. She did some more trimming on the left side, and told me if I wanted her to brighten up those darkened highlights let her know. I wet my hair at home, and styled it how I usually do (which consist of letting it dry by itself or using a diffuser on it. The new hair dresser didn't have one). I noticed it is still uneven, so I text her to let her know. She is going to fix it tomorrow. She is young (29). I didn't want her to feel bad, so I told her my hair is wavy and can be deceiving sometimes when cutting it. My former hairdresser that I had for years had a habit of leaving the left side too long, so she always had to double check it at the end of the cut. Maybe this girl has the same habit. That dark orange looking tint is kinda weird, but at least it's darker than before. I don't think I want a repeat of it next time.  I showed it to my mom, and she said it looks gold to her when the sun shines on it, and not bad. Gold? Eventually those lightlights to lowlights will be nolights.

@krista4  When I was driving back from my sister's tonight after feeding her cats and watching an episode of The Morning Show, a Styx song (Too Much Time on My Hands) came on the radio and I thought of you.

16.xx:    MR. TRAVOLTA AND MS. NEWTON-JOHN - SUMMER NIGHTS (1978)

As much as I don't like musicals, I really like this one and it was hard to pick a song.
AXSTV shows a 2 hour special sometimes on the behind the scenes stuff on Grease. It's good. Talks with a bunch of the cast.  Janis Joplin special is on the station right now.

My hair is naturally curly (cue Charlie Brown's little red-headed girl).  I was keeping it straight for years but in the last year decided to let it go back to its natural state.  It is really hard to find someone who can deal with waves and curls well, so I specifically seek that out.  Your new lady might be OK on straighter hair, but you could need a better specialist for waves.  I also don't understand any hairdresser who doesn't have a diffuser.  That is...odd.

It's funny, I had a Prince song come on my mix the other day, and I thought about how one of my friends had recently heard Prince and told me it reminded me of her, but when my Prince song came on, it made me think of a third friend.  I love how a song or artist can have that effect, even with people on this board we don't know IRL.  Styx is still my guiltiest pleasure in the world.  :)

I was auditioning songs last night for my draft here, and with one I kept thinking, "simey will like this" even though it's not something you've taken in a draft as far as I know.

I keep losing my internet. This has been going on for 3 weeks. Someone came today, and a maintenance team is supposed to come tomorrow and look at lines around the box outside. That seems to be where the problem lies.
This draft has been plagued with utilities issues.

I had to send out Mr R for a haircut.  I couldn't deal with it any more.  He looked like a sheepdog.

It might be worth the 30 minute drive in the future.

I got Mrs. Eephus a wig for her birthday.  She has a Nigerian friend who's been braiding her hair for decades and has had to shut her salon down.  I figured it was a good way to support her business during the pandemic and my wife has another look for her zoom calls.

My dentist complimented me on my hair today and that was after it had been under a bike helmet.  I guess I don't need a trim for a while

17.xx:  AEROSMITH - I DON'T WANT TO MISS A THING (1998)

Don't you lie to me - we need some 90s cheese in this thing and I know damn well you are singing along if this comes up on the jukebox!!
What were better - Michael Bay's special effects or...this.

I think you're looking for Brown-Eyed Handsome Man if you're going the ballplayer tip.

She said that she had a diffuser with her old hair dryer, but she took that one home. She needs to bring it back, and I'd think there has to be other clients that use it. I always left with my hair wet from my past hairdresser, but this one wanted to blow dry it some to see what the color would look like on the highlight/lowlight. That is when I asked if she had a diffuser. I told her go ahead and use the regular dryer to see what the color looked like, and I saw it and thought "Oh ####, is that dark orange i'm seeing." It could be considered a strawberry blonde maybe...maybe. At least it is darker.  I'm more concerned about getting the cut even. It's in the back where you can tell the most. The left side definitely falls longer. I'm going to show her too that my former hairdresser would stand in front of me and pull down on the waves on each side to compare and see if they were even. I don't want to come across as bossy, but it's a tip that could help her. We both had on a mask, and she had her own private room.

I always just have them leave it to air dry, too.  She should definitely be pulling down the sides to even it out; they always do that!  She must be very new.  Hopefully you can help her a little.

I went for my first cut since January a few weeks ago.  I had to text them I was there and then wait outside until she came and got me.  Then I had to have my temperature taken, then fill out a 7-8 question form, then wash and sanitize my hands.  We both had to wear masks (they're mandatory here inside anyway), but when she washed my hair she also said she had to put a towel over my face.  It was hot and uncomfortable, but it only lasts as long as the hair-washing.  They had also spaced out the chairs and only see 1/2 as many people per day because of all the sanitizing they have to do between clients.  But at least they're open again!

Amazing, I was so baffled by his comment that I just kind of ignored it and assumed I missed a joke.

I had.
Lol. I always tell this story, but my favorite malapropism ever (I don't know if malapropism would apply to this instance, but what the hell) was when Terrell Owens basically tore his ankle up before the Super Bowl and was trying new techniques and methods to get it to heal quickly. As the Super Bowl week wore on, it was more likely than not that Owens would be able to play. He declared it "an act of God," or something similar. My friend, upon seeing him in the SB, said that he heard Owens spent all week in a "hyperbolic chamber." "Yes indeed," I told my friend. "Yes, indeed."

That was my first thought. I can't go to any salon right now, but I would go to my current hairdresser if she lived thirty-forty minutes away.

Very fab.
My former hairdresser's husband had a beauty parlor built into their basement when they built a new house a few years ago. I've never been there. I didn't even know she was quitting the beauty parlor until she called my sister, because she had to reschedule her due to the pandemic closing down the salons, and she broke the news to her then. She told her she would understand if she didn't want to drive all way out to where she lives. I'm wondering how my hairdresser is doing financially with her husband, because he owns multiple night clubs in the city, and most have been closed down. He owns the comedy zone, the country and western bar, a dance club, and they were just getting ready to open a bourbon and bowling club.  They had to close down their hip hop club due to some violence. He owns a club in another town too. They have been doing some curbside service with food, but that doesn't do much financially. Hopefully he built up a big nest egg, because they were well off before the virus hit. She did my hair a day before the salons had to close, and she told me her husband was the most worried about the employees he was still keeping on the payroll. She said their money could only stretch so far for them.

I'm still overthinking 1981 so I'll show some much needed love for the 2010s

16.ee - Hypersonic Missiles - Sam Fender (2019)

17.ee - Runaways - The Killers (2012)

Brandon Flowers was born the year between The River and Nebraska and Sam Fender was born thirteen years after that.  They both somehow found the Springsteen tree and tapped into it for these songs.

Both songs have a big mid-80s Boss on the Jumbotron sound.  Hypersonic Missiles has a saxophone solo with a low E string guitar part that's ripped off from Born to Run.  Runaways opens with a piano theme and a lonesome backbeat like dozens of Springsteen songs and it builds and builds from there to its glorious power chord chorus.
The Killers Sam's Town album is almost entirely a love letter to Springsteen imo

Salons and barbers in SF are currently only allowed to be open if they operate outdoors.  I don't know where you'd begin to get the water and power hookups set up on the sidewalk.

Yeah, that's crazy.  I'd just say "you're not allowed to be open."  Seattle allows salons at 25% capacity, but where I am can have 50%.  Whoop.

Anyone cooler than Keith Richards in the history of the world?
i'll swear to that it court. as i've told before, he & i were two among about 20 people who partied together while my band and the one he was hanging out with did the same 5-day gig at a club in CT. we had a little, but no special, contact. four years later, i was partying on the beach in Sanibel Island FL and was invited to a party in a house that i'd heard was owned by Bill Wyman. draped (his sitting style) on a couch to the side was the First Pirate of Rock. i made my way over, nodded at him, he cocked his head, gestured toward me and said, "Aay, you were wif Maahfa (Martha Reeves) at Shboom, yeah? Dayuuw (the Cockney pronunciation of my name), innit? i couldnt have told you the name of 5 of those 20 people whose name i knew no better nor worse than the most famous loadie in creation. i shake my head thinking about it, like it happened yesterday instead of before many of you were born.

I trimmed my hair myself a little bit when I got home. Just in the front. I could visibly see that some of the pieces were longer compared to the other side, and I couldn't take it. ✂️  I can't fix the back myself though. At some point we started talking about health issues, and I can't remember what brought it up, but she had a lot to say, and maybe that distracted her. Maybe she is just not very experienced. Hopefully my hairdon't turns into a hairdo tomorrow. Oh, I asked her what number she was using to darken the highlight some, and she said #9. I was like    I told her that is my bad luck number. She probably thought I was a freak at that point, but she said she mixed it with a number 40, and so technically I could say it was 49.

 Thankfully.
Tell me about it. I'm in Riverside County. It's not working well for us.

eta* I've personally acted as if shutdown is in full mode. I hope that I can avoid it that way. But I'm definitely not totally secluded.

The Bay Area was the first US metro to shut down.  SF has reopened much slower than the rest of CA.  Thankfully.
Good for you! At least some places have done it right.  Stay away from the rest of the State now.

My state is still in phase 2, but I'd like to revert back to phase 1. I doubt that will happen, but I hope the Governor continues to hold off from moving to phase 3.

I'm watching some Traveling Wilburys videos right now.  It occurred to me that Tom Petty was actually the second best-looking Wilbury.  I bet he never had that experience in any other situation.  Coolness rankings:

Bob Dylan

Tom Petty

George Harrison

Roy Orbison

Jeff Lynne

I dunno if you have to tell people you are cool that kind of defeats the porpoise and shows a lack of cool. Like when people have to tell you how smart they are instead of just being smart. being not cool, I'm not really an authority on this tho so maybe not
But it's The Cool, see. The "the" in front of it makes it impenetrable. It's like Miles Davis's Birth Of The Cool. You give birth, or you use "The," and nobody gets to question you.

That's why it would be an interesting draft.

When we had the schlock draft, there were differing opinions about what was and wasn't schlock.
