The Return of the Desert Island Jukebox Draft - Drop in a quarter (3 Viewers)

43rd Round  Led Zeppelin - Trampled Under Foot (1975)

Cold take alert:  I really don't enjoy a lot of Led Zeppelin, as Robert Plant's voice gives me chills in the bad way.  This one is just so good, though.  And thus I finally close out a decade, too!

John Paul Jones and John Bonham were both part of the Grammy-award-winning "Rockestra Theme" with Paul, which I've discussed previously.  Bonham also played drums on a version of Paul's "Beware My Love" that was released a few years ago and is far superior to the version on Wings at the Speed of Sound.  Jimmy Page played some guitar on the soundtrack for A Hard Day's Night, and though not a Beatles collaboration, I guess I should mention he was also the guitarist on The Beatles Cover That Shall Not Be Named.

So big shoutout to @simey for bringing this one to my attention earlier in the draft. I honestly didn’t expect to like it or use it in my playlist, since this group is a bit outside my normal musical wheelhouse (plus my favorite song from 2020 fits well in my theme).  Yo Mama selects:

43.ym - The Chicks - March March (2020)

I’ve listened to this song a bunch since Simey’s recommendation. It’s a powerful song with an incredible video. I highly recommend watching it, particularly towards the end where they start showing all the names.  Goose bumps every time.

The band also fits well in the jukebox due to their history speaking out against the Iraq war before anyone else, particularly in their genre.  And they paid the price for speaking truth to power.

Brenda's packin' heat 'cause she don't like Mondays
Underpaid teacher policin' the hallways
Print yourself a weapon and take it to the gun range
(Ah, cut the ####, you ain't goin' to the gun range)
Standin' with Emma and our sons and daughters
Watchin' our youth have to solve our problems
I'll follow them, so who's comin' with me?
.....

Tell the ol' boys in the white bread lobby
What they can and can't do with their bodies
Temperatures are risin', cities are sinkin'
(Ah, cut the ####, you know your city is sinkin')
Lies are truth and truth is fiction
Everybody's talkin', who's gonna listen?

If you bring up Elvis to my mom, she loves to talk about being at "The" Greensboro Concert in 1972.  She saw him again a few years later, and said he still sounded good and was engaging with the audience, but had gained a lot of weight and couldn't do his dance moves as well anymore. Here's a double dose of The King.

Round 42

Don't Be Cruel - Elvis Presley (1956)

I'll take the A-side too - Hound Dog
Round 42 SOD

Listened to Mrs. R's jukebox while working today partly because she unexpectedly sniped me 5 times . Could do without a couple of the B-sides but overall a nice mix. Seems to be missing at least 10 tracks though.

Best discovery- Camila Cabello - Havana
I haven't updated it for a while.  Probably will wait til the end at this point.

42.ee - Dancing in the Dark - Postmodern Jukebox ft. Von Smith (2015)

I oscillate between love and hate with this cover which usually isn't a good sign but 2015 is a thin year otherwise and the band has Jukebox in their name.

Dancing in the Dark has a very traditional verse chorus bridge structure which translates well as a Jump Blues number.   There's a video as well but the singer annoys me.

What's the ruling on a song made by a German group and released in Germany and Europe in 2012, but not released in the US until 2013? Can I use the European time zone on this and take it for 2012?

43.ee - I Ain't Got No Home - Billy Bragg (2013)

Springsteen is such a quintessentially American artist that it's tough to find comps who weren't born in the USA*.  From the UK, there's Bragg, Frank Turner and the aforedrafted Mike Peters.  I guess you can also include John Wesley Harding but he's probably spent more time in this country than Britain.

Bragg shares Springsteen's passions for social justice and the working man.  His East End accent usually distinguishes Bragg pretty clearly from the Boss but I think he sounds more like old Springsteen than young Bragg on this song.  It's an old Woody Guthrie tune that's as relevant today as the day it was written.  Springsteen covered the same song for the excellent Folkways: A Vision Shared album in the late 80s.  The Boss' version stuck close to Woody's original, even singing it in a unusually high register for him.  Bragg's version is taken much slower which emphasizes the tragedy of the lyrics.

*There's an Italian guy named Graziano Romani who's recorded two albums of mostly obscure Springsteen covers.  You can tell they come from his heart but nah.

Milky Chance - Stolen Dance

2012 (German band time zone)

I like this song, fits the theme, and the early teens are kind of a blind spot so to the jukebox it goes.

43.03: The Boys Of Summer - The Ataris (2003)

well ...there it is ...I'm so desperate, I'm taking ex-Eagles songs in the 00s ...this is how horrifically ####ty music from this time frame is

I did nod my head a bit to the music ...

but then I felt so guilty that I had my wife hit my chest with a sock full of nickels to finish out the song.
She needs to hit you in the head with that sock of nickels too, cause that was drafted already by MAC.

43.03: Bad Day - Daniel Powter (2005)

word is that his sister was the burr-headed workout infomercial queen in the 80s (you have to pretty old to remember this)

I just realized going through the spreadsheet and adding songs to spotify I skipped my 33 round pick.

33.Clap your hands now

Gregory Porter - Liquid Spirit (Claptone Remix)

2013

Clubbing days were a thing of the past when this thing came out, but this is like an old 4/4 house tune with a deep soul voice. fits well with the rest of the jukebox.

Btw, I'm feeling the "pickings are slim" vibe.  I have tons of options for Beatles collaborations, but other than that Eric Clapton pick (which I liked because of BB King), I'm dedicated only to taking something I love, and I only have a couple remaining plus the free roll.  Feel like I need to keep digging or just give in to the theme and whatever the ####.
