The Return of the Desert Island Jukebox Draft - Drop in a quarter (3 Viewers)

Petition that, since we have picks 48 and 49 coming up tomorrow, we add a special Friday night extra pick #50 to close it out, but pick #50 must be posted along with italicized lyrics (need not be lyrics from song selected).
I changed the thread title to reflect this change.
I suggest the following:

"if a bolded ampersand is NOT included at the end of said lyrics, a 'to-be-determined' amount of picks may be ripped from the poster's list of 50 and then distributed to others.  The amount of picks removed will be based on the roll of the 20-side die and the distribution of the picks will be determined by the dungeon master based solely on his opinion of other posters list needs."

Da Brat - Funkdafied

1994

Had a few other 1994 songs written down, but this one is going on the jukebox with a bunch of the other funk already there. Man, I dug this song when it came out. I've tried to keep some semblance of variety on this, but the late 80s-early 90s is basically old school jams.

47.Mashup
Roman GianArthur - All:need

2015

Not usually a fan of mashups or whatever. But this guy combined Radiohead(!) and D'Angelo(!) in a year where I was really struggling to find anything to fit on the jukebox. This is a smooth R&B cut that can sit tight next to Maxwell, etal. on the 'box. Plus I get some instrumentals from my favourite album combined w some neosoul. Somehow it works.

I originally wanted my 50 year juke box window to be 1969-2018 because I wanted Chris Cornell - One to be a part of it. What's it a cover of? Good question. His intent was to cover U2, but he googled the song and the lyrics he inadvertently used was Metallica. So he did a hybrid. His rendition of U2's One with Metallica's lyrics over laid. It's a great track, but I wanted it for the back story more than anything. Since I've moved my 50 year window I needed to bail on this cover, but my replacement Cornell is a better one anyway.

Round 48 Chris Cornell - Imagine (2011)

He is the best voice of the grunge era.

That thread about what makes More Than A Feeling great sent me down one hell of an awesome rabbit hole.
Yep, I am probably one of the few 54 year old guys that was not burnt out on that record, since I started  my music education with new wave, talking heads, EC,  Pretenders, Joe Jackson, I then went the singer songwriter route for a bunch of years, And since I’ve gotten into vinyl big time, I am catching up now on the 60s and 70s rock n roll, I have 5 copies of that record now, lol..., this one is my current fave

Because that part of the song was in Japanese.  Does no one listen to links around here?

Disclaimer:  I don't unless I really like the song 30 seconds in...

Far removed from their hit “WOOHOO!” song, this is a beautiful lament for how war and life in the military can impact relationships and normal life. This group, particularly Damon Albarn,  were outspoken critics of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and this song reflected a part of their overall political commentary. Yo Mama selects:

48.ym - Blur - Out of Time (2003)

The video uses documentary footage to follow the daily life of an aircraft technician whose relationship is falling apart while she is serving on an aircraft carrier.

Where's the love song to set us free?
Too many people down
Everything turning the wrong way round

But I don't know what love would be
If we stop dreaming now
Lord knows we'll never clear the clouds

And you've been so busy lately that you haven't found the time
To open up your mind
And watch the world spinning gently out of time

48th Round  Colin Hay - Overkill (acoustic version) (2003)

This is one that I knew from the beginning I wanted to take, but I was waiting to see how my years would shake out in order to determine whether I'd take the original or this acoustic version.  Having used the year of the original, I'm "stuck" with the acoustic that I think I love more anyway.

It's a shame that Men At Work weren't taken seriously due to the land down under and such, because Hay is a giant talent and this song in particular displays it.  Check out this super-cool choir version from a few years ago!

Hay has been a member of Ringo's 8th, 10th, 13th, and 14th All-Starr Bands and continues to be a member of this current iteration.

One step beyond!

fun group ...I wanted their main big hit ...but couldn't qualify for a one-hit wonder ...  :kicksrock:

though they were MTV darlings ...they only had one other hit that charted below top 40 in the Billboard 100.

Love this song

48.03: Toast And Marmalade - Tin Tin

:lmao:  ...ok ...I really like this ...but on the other hand, it's so bad it's good

Apparently, these guys were "discovered" by the Gibb brothers who introduced them to THE Robert Stigwood (who would later get filthy rich producing giant Broadway shows) who signed to a one record deal.

But here's what draws me to this song.  It has that early folk/rock sound of Peter & Gordon ...Chad & Jeremy and a bridge between the suits of early Spinal Tap and the flower power of couple years later.  When I hear this kind of stuff  it often brings up warm, sweeping memories of my childhood ...just makes me feel really good.

Also, I sometimes get a bit weepy when I hear The Association.    ...SHUT UP!!!

As much as I enjoy them I thought that stacking the juke with mash-up’s would be cheating, so I resisted temptation. That said, I decided early on I wanted to find the best one and include it. I have a soft spot for Green Day and they have a great one they pull out at most of their shows, but I’m gonna break my tie by pleasing (most of) this particular crowd.

Round 49 Bruce Springsteen - Detroit Medley (release date - 2006)

Devil With A Blue Dress, Good Golly Miss Molly, See See Rider, and Jenny Take A Ride. What a wild journey. I’m glad I saw them live when I did, but to have seen this group at their peak in the 70’s would have been something else.

ya, much as i like your loosening the OHW criteria to 'mostly known for', i cant say which of their Top Two that would be

This medley and both of its original constituents have been picked in this draft.

49.xx El Paso, Marty Robbins (1960)

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
Music would play and Felina would whirl

Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina
Wicked and evil while casting a spell
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden
I was in love, but in vain I could tell

One night a wild young cowboy came in
Wild as the West Texas wind
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing
With wicked Felina, the girl that I loved

So in anger I challenged his right for the love of this maiden
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore
My challenge was answered in less than a heartbeat
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor

Just for a moment I stood there In silence
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there
I had but one chance and that was to run

Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran
Out where the horses were tied
I caught a good one, it looked like it could run
Up on its back and away I did ride
Just as fast as I could from the West Texas town of El Paso
Out to the badlands of New Mexico

Back in El Paso my life would be worthless
Everything's gone, in life nothing is left
It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden
My love is stronger than my fear of death

I saddled up and away I did go
Riding alone in the dark
Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart
And at last here I am on the hill overlooking El Paso
I can see Rosa's Cantina below
My love is strong and it pushes me onward
Down off the hill to Felina I go

Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys
Off to my left ride a dozen or more
Shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me
I have to make it to Rosa's back door

Something is dreadfully wrong, for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side
Though I am trying to stay in the saddle
I'm getting weary, unable to ride

But my love for Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen
Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest

From out of nowhere Felina has found me
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for
One little kiss, then Felina good-bye

Poor bastage croaked before being awarded a hero's Felitio

49th Round  Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over (live version from Farewell to the World, released 2006)

I was going to take "Mean to Me," but Neil Finn sounds so good on this vocal I went with it instead.  He's always needed a new hairstyle, though he's still cute anyway.  I'm a fan of a prominent nose.

I did it!  I found another song I actually liked from a year I could use, so I will have my free roll left for italicized lyric night.

Mark Hart, who was a member of Crowded House in the early and mid-90s, including for the Sydney Opera House concert from which this live album emanated, contributed guitar, keyboard, and backing vocals to Ringo's surprisingly good album, Time Takes Time, and guitar on Ringo's unsurprisingly ungood album, Y Not.
