The Return of the Desert Island Jukebox Draft - Drop in a quarter (3 Viewers)

I forgot who drafted it but I just listened to an open tab with the Alicia Keys B-side.  Very nice song but it needed a better ending.

OK, I owe some picks.  After much struggling with a theme (or lack thereof), I think I have a plan.  I considered a swing/blues draft - not sure I can get 50 songs at one a year that way.  Considered a cover songs draft - do-able, but more work that I have time for on this schedule (which also kills any effort to find out the B-Sides, sorry).  So, how about just some quality drummin'?  My jukebox will be songs with cool drum tracks, the sorta stuff to air drum along with.

We'll have to see how long I can make this work.  First pick of Gene Krupa gets the ball rolling, so let's go next with:

2.11:  Tusk, Fleetwood Mac (1979)

Mick Fleetwood suggested using Lindsey Buckingham's sound check riff, along with a stack of weird percussion to create this song:  "I'm playing floor toms, and I overdubbed a lot of American Indian wood tribal drums. It's a whole hodgepodge of Kleenex boxes, drums, weird stuff, slapping of lamb chops and things. I got a big leg of lamb in there somewhere – I'm hitting it with a spatula."

3.15:  Hot for Teacher, Van Halen (1984)

One of the few rock singles to start with the drum solo.

4.11:  Longview, Green Day (1994)

While I love the drums on this track, the weird part on this song is the bass line, which according to Mike Dirnt: "When Billie gave me a shuffle beat for Longview, I was frying on acid so hard. I was laying up against the wall with my bass lying on my lap. It just came to me. I said, 'Billie, check this out. Isn't this the wackiest thing you've ever heard?' Later, it took me a long time to be able to play it, but it made sense when I was on drugs."

Wow.  I just read the thread about re-opening schools.  I now understand why I don't need to go to the political threads.  Some people are just doofi.

wow ...ok, this may require some discussion - I can shift to the "A" Side if need be.

5.04: Gloria - Them - 1964 (A Side: Baby Please Don't Go)

This is commonly voted as a top 100 single of all time and has been covered/played by many, many groups.  It has been a garage rock standard as it's so easy to play and sing.

The song became a garage rock staple and a part of many rock bands' repertoires. It is particularly memorable for its "Gloria!" chorus. It is easy to play, as a simple three-chord song, and thus is popular with those learning to play guitar.  Humourist Dave Barry joked that "You can throw a guitar off a cliff, and as it bounces off rocks on the way down, it will, all by itself, play Gloria."[22]  :lmao:

a)  one of many covers of this song was taken earlier in the draft by @MAC_32 with Patti Smith.

This is the original and the Patti Smith version contains none of the lyrics of the original ...just the refrain.

b)  do these guys qualify as one-hit wonders (see initial definition - it's long and doesn't need to be repasted)

These guys were relatively short-lived and only charted 3 songs including this one (none very high - 24 and 33) - this only got as high as 71 a couple of years later.  And that's it.  Of course, Van Morrison went on to become a legend, but that doesn't count within the standard Wiki definition of one-hit wonders.
Dang both Glorias gone....

just played  this the other day

5.12 Freak on a Leash, Korn (1999)

Well, i felt so good pairing the Arabic scales of Paint It Black and Kashmir with my 2nd & 3rd round pix that, after selecting I Only Have Eyes for You, i decided to look for its natural twin. Seamless -
I don't know your theme, but I was not prepared for this particular song to be picked by you.

A few years ago, i was reading scripts for a producer friend for a time. Now, i have little or no interest nor investment in the horror genre of movies but one of the projects that came across his desk made me want to take six weeks and see if i could re-write it into a horror comedy that could be made on enough of a shoestring that it barely had to succeed to make a profit. It had a title so good i thought it would make money on that alone (unfortunately, i can't list it here) and an interesting premise but, otherwise, was total garbage. Unfortunately the author, as writers will, thought it was perfection and wouldnt let a line be touched nor even option it if a rewrite was our intent. We let it go, but i been rewriting it a li'lbit in the back of my head ever since.

The Oasis Diner had been bypassed by a new interstate highway for over a decade. The failure of the establishment killed the man who'd run it most his life and both exigencies had ground his wife into a bitter invalid, growling & grumbling in the giant house aback the diner. Operation of the Oasis was down to two indolent & disagreeable sons. Breakfast and lunch trade from a nearby gypsum mine kept the operation barely afloat, but the mother insisted that the Oasis keep the same hours her husband had, leaving the brothers little to do but spend their evenings sniping at each other behind the counter and scheming ahead of each other in their dying mother's will consideration. One night, just when the brothers' animus had already reached a near-homicidal pitch, a pretty young woman walks into their establishment covered with blood. Mayhem ensues.

As for your humble servant, my years-long sentence caring for my my aged parents has dashed my highest writing aspirations into utter infeasibility. In fact, the last few years i've dedicated the first month of the summer to an intentionally light project to clear my palate but, this year, even that episode was disastrous. I've been trying to think of a way to write something that would take no care whatsoever and help me kick out the jams of my own anger and frustration. And the Oasis Diner stepped up to the fore of my addled sensibilities. Thought i'd take a month and try to fire out my own Grand Gignol a la Spec to present to the producer which might inspire him to make another offer on the property.

I always pick a specific writing soundtrack for each piece (i listened to nothing but marimba music for almost a year on one project cuz i liked how it sounded like acoustic electronica) and intend the fifty songs in the Oasis Diner jukebox (which will have foregone update since the interstate was built, which serves my interest quite well) to serve as the playlist for composition of my nasty li'l project.

Oasis Diner
Oh yeah, yeah you were doing that, weren't you?

That Korn pick up and very much surprised me, too. They cut that whole album by driving into the middle of a secluded area with about a year's supply of meth. In a month, they were done.

With the meth?
