The Return of the Desert Island Jukebox Draft - Drop in a quarter (2 Viewers)

Are you going to make an effort to watch the ones you haven't seen yet?
Depends on availability. Chances are, I've seen it. Like I said in the other thread, we did our big project (thirty or so pages) paper in a class called Music, Market, and Youth Culture on teen movies, especially those of the eighties. I've since kept up, actually.

eta* I'm also going to use Ebert ratings and the like to give some sort of objective weight to them. Rotten Tomatoes, Ebert, an audience meter, etc. Then I'll interpolate my familiarity with them on top of it with like an equal 1/4 or 1/5 weight to the others.

But we shall see. I have been surprised by the timdraft before. And these music drafts never cease to surprise me in their depth, which is why one really can't take a thing for granted when there's twenty-plus people drafting with scarcity.

I don't envy Eephus's theme this time for that reason for sure.

I was a teen in the 70s before the genre exploded in the 80s.  It was actually kind of a lull because the 60s had beach and rock n roll movies.  The 70s are so depleted that two of the biggest teen movies of the decade were set in 1959 and 1962.

I may get stuck rewatching the fairly unwatchable typical Dean and Brando movies. At that point, it's a refresher and a skim watch, frankly. I'm not going into things that were groundbreaking at the time. Gets no real points from me personally. That's where the criteria will come in, I hope.  Our sociology professor that partly graded our paper graded us down for our not bringing to the fore the issue of the makeup worn by the men in the film.

Liberal arts colleges. :wall:

I think I've got one -- American Graffiti. What was the other?

I'm judging the 60s, 70s & 80s.

I know teen movies may have a different equation, but I'd really appreciate any tips that may carry over.

We Are beginning to discuss some details in the thread.

Should be fun.

Scarcity in the movie draft crosses genre and decade categories.

I think the more I think about it, the less fun it will be. The more I thought about the sports draft, I went down a rabbit hole.  I saw the judging and would have been fine sticking to my original plan. It would have been more detailed than some, less than others.

Grease

ETA:  The Rydell class of '59
Oh my. How could I forget that? I've drafted that whole album before in tim's 70s draft. He hates Grease. I laughed.

I'm a lot like Sandy. An athletic supporter.

eta* I actually have that on vinyl in the hallway of my house. Had it since I was a kid.

Grease 2 was added recently on Amazon Prime.  That's a stinker.
Yeah, I remember it being pretty bad. That's with Michelle Pfeiffer, huh? I'm honestly trying to think of any movie that I liked that she was in and I'm coming up blank. I know she's respected, but I didn't even like Scarface other than for living vicariously through Al Pacino's nose.

Great soundtrack. I dig the song "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" that Rizzo sang.
Very good stong. Very plaintive. Stockard Channing nailed it.

There was a Hopeless punk compilaton that featured the bands doing Grease songs. Pretty interesting. The nineties were a weird time in punk. Things got all shooby dooby on everybody and nobody was quite sure how that happened.

My buddy had that cd. I  never liked grease so I couldn't get w it, but I know the disc you're talking about. I thought it was a less than Jake cd but maybe it was a compilation

I think you're right. I remember Less Than Jake did one and Hopeless came out with a compilation playing off the cover of the vinyl album for Grease. I think the Hopeless comp might have had West Side Story cover songs.

Blab blab blab on my end.

LOL.

Here you go, guys! Too funny.
Ah no, we've been discussing musicals.  I don't think he'd take this one since he has to have seen anything he takes, and I doubt he's seen or would see this.

I don't have a favorite number; I just know some shouldn't be put into volume settings, because they're dumb and possibly evil.
Ok I thought I was the only one with number ocd for things like tv volume and microwave times.

For me, anything ending in 1, 3, or 7 is best. Ending in 5 is ok depending on the first digit. 4 is the only acceptable even number to end in. Drives my family nuts.

Glad to see there are a bunch of us with the same crazy in our little online music drafting traveling band.

So when you change the channel, do you refer to yourself in the third person and say "Yo Mama remix is whack?"

   Yours are as crazy as mine!  I mean, you're probably going to die an untimely and possibly tragic death for letting 4s into your life, but I'm glad that you try, at least.

There'll come a time when all of us must leave here
Then nothing sister Mary can do
Will keep me here with you
As nothing in this life that I've been trying
Could equal or surpass the art of dying
Do you believe me?

In 50,000 listens to my George mix and approx. 8952 listens to "Pisces Fish," not once has "All Things Must Pass" or "My Sweet Lord" come on.  Is Spotify just saying, "We know these are on your list so stop ####### with us?"
Oof. But Jesus and the fish...and the bread...and the water into wine?

I'm a fan of 7 and 4. I do need to call and get my new debit card changed. I don't want that 999 on there. I already got #9 put on my hair yesterday, which is probably why it was cut uneven and has orange streaks in it.

What do you do when the White album comes to that infamous spot?

In other news, this exists and was a thingy. This came on right after Chingy in my Youtube feed. Love the guest spot from Murphy Ali. Can't beat his introspection.

Two purr

Wait a minute... You went it knowing that #9 was BAD, but still let em put it on ya?

Free association at its finest. I'm thinking of the story of Jesus feeding the people with all the fish from three fish and turning the water into wine for everybody. Nothing comprehensible, really.
Ok, I thought it was an analysis of Pisces Fish, and really since so much of George's work was religious in meaning, I thought I might have missed all that.  But the free association works!

Ah, sorry then. I have never even heard of the song, never mind tried to get exegetic about it. The "oof" was how much listening you must be doing to George to have that one keep coming up, though. I can sympathize. My algorithm keeps insisting on certain artists in my feed that I want no part of.

Time it was and what a time it was
A time of innocence, a time of confidences
Long ago, it must be/I have a photograph
Preserve your memories/It's all that's left me

I've been thinking about the danger inherent to 4.

Look at the Arabic numerals on your keypad.

4 has more sharp edges & points than any other.

Plus, it's just as dangerous in all four Cardinal directions.

That says it all!
