The Return of the Desert Island Jukebox Draft - Drop in a quarter (1 Viewer)

I think the more I think about it, the less fun it will be. The more I thought about the sports draft, I went down a rabbit hole.  I saw the judging and would have been fine sticking to my original plan. It would have been more detailed than some, less than others.
I'm just glad I stuck to ice skating.  I'm pretty sure my knowledge there stacks up against anyone else's.

Oh my. How could I forget that? I've drafted that whole album before in tim's 70s draft. He hates Grease. I laughed.
You think that's bad?  I wanted to judge documentaries.  The only one chosen so far is Hoop Dreams, which I found to be meh at best.

Tim chose it.

I’ll double post picks today. Our internet has been down and I don’t feel like typing out multi paragraph posts on my phone. I’m excited to hear some of these jukebox playlists.

Going back to the unrest in Nothern Ireland for my next pick. Yo Mama selects:

20.03 - U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday (1983)

This song has NEVER had an original b-side EVER!

Not much to say about this one that isn’t already widely known, but this is one of the best known protest/political songs of the era and one of the songs that got U2 wide introduction in the US.

I’m going to get sneaky with the b-side and take the one on the alternate release with Two Hearts Beat as One  How’s that for a a/b combo?

Great stuff. I took 2 Hearts as an A-side but as far as I know it’s ok for you to have it as a b-side.

20th Round   Julian Lennon - Valotte (1984)

I'm slightly desperate when it comes to the 80s.  I suppose some might find it irritating or worse how much Julian sounds like John on this song, but I find it soothing and comforting that he sounds and looks like him.  Julian turned out to be an A-OK dude despite everything, too, so let's give him a little love.

I'll take the UK b-side, Let Me Be, too.

Beatles collaboration:

Again boredom gets the better of me. This is for those closing it down and taking the A train home at 1 AM. (Yes, I built a city, too.)

Round 20

Song: In A Sentimental Mood

Artist(s): Duke Ellington and John Coltrane

Year: 1963

20.ee - Disorder in the House - Warren Zevon featuring Bruce Springsteen (2003)

A comic vision of the apocalypse recorded for Zevon's farewell album The Wind.  The Boss contributes supporting vocals on the chorus and three appropriately sloppy guitar solos.

I should have related to krista last night that I can totally see her discomfort with starting out the day with even numbers. I feel the same way.

20.14

D'Angelo - Ain't That Easy

2014

Despite the song title, my 2014 selection was that easy. This song is a distillation of so much of what I dig about D'Angelo's music and it fits right next to the likes of Sly and some of the neo-soul on the jukebox. It's pretty good Live.

Almost went with Sly this morning, but he was tied to '89 and I have so much from '89 believe it or not that I could afford to let Sly profile for a while.

D'Angelo's album came out of the blue for most listeners, IIRC. Good stuff.

18.Hey, listen

Childish Gambino - Me and Your Mama

2017

This will be the probably only song I do this in this draft, but if you haven't listened to this song yet go ahead and give link a click, and stick it out for its entirety. First time I listened to it kinda blew me away. This song and really this album came out of nowhere a few years ago. A love letter to 70s funk with some rock thrown in--the album art and this song are reminiscent of Maggot Brain. The tempo changes and the vocals in this one are unique and really kick the album off in style.

Up until I heard this album I had associated Donald Glover's Childish Gambino act with modern rap that I didn't bother to dive into, but Glover must be really talented because he zigged instead of sticking with the hip hop zag and pulled it off. There's another track on this album that I thought about but it's really close to the Bootsy Collins joint I drafted earlier (I think Bootsy gets writing credits on it) and this one of the coolest sounding songs I've heard in the past 5 years or so, so it's this one.

Plus if you are at a cookout you can scare the kids with this one. Or just play it on blast at the speakeasy. Be creative and shoehorn Glover's scream into a social event your rockin the jukebox at.

I'm in love when we are smoking that la la lalala

Let me into your heart

Do you really love me?

I'ma get you girl aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

THIS is the kid i want arguing w the gods on our behalf right now and conceiving & writing us OUT of the ##### sitch we're in. step up and matter as your talent dictates, friendo

Might as well pull this out now since the roof has been lifted on Ted Leo. This is one of the first songs I thought of when I came up with my theme. It's so damn infectious.

19th round: Ted Leo and the Pharmacists -- Hearts of Oak

Year: 2003

Album: Hearts of Oak

Not released as a single.
rising toward the top of my "not get" list. listened to em a couple times after raves in the DIAD, and the two songs in this thing. the musical equivalent of the guy who wont stop poking you and saying weird #### at the bus stop.
