The Rise and Fall of ESPN (2 Viewers)

Mike & Mike went on and on about the Cam Newton statement this morning. Good grief, when Stugotz is the voice of reason on a subject, it’s time to move on.

i love how everyone here is saying espn has fallen and so on by referencing what they listened to on espn recently uh just think on that one for a minute brohans take that to the bank

Still only PTI & live sports for me... In fact, at the end of every PTI there is like a 15 second overlap with SC6 before it cuts off - same thing every day:

"What's good? Welcome to the best 60 minutes of your day."

Usually cuts off there, but if this is the best 60 minutes of your day, you might want to go dive out of your window.

QFT.

I don't know a single person who watches that garbage.

I have literally thought the same thing when I heard that line.  Yeah I turn it off right when that garbage starts

The Wake Forest and Clemson game has literally had their announcers broadcasting over the phone for the past hour.

Theyve hit the buttons a few times when they get excited.

I watch NFL live and live sports, some Sportscenter. I have to admit even the NFL shows are getting unwatchable. I like very few of the "analysts" (I think Ryan Clarke is very good, intelligent, articulate, somewhat charismatic)-most of them drive me nuts with all the screaming and yelling and fake "enthusiasm". It's like the network is trying to replicate a bunch of buddies drinking at a bar watching games-but it's so fake and contrived it just comes off as phony.

cannot stand Schefter. He's a pompous blowhard who loves to hear himself talk, talks over others as if he is compelled to maximize his screen time, and repeats himself (I guess he has to summarize several times) over and over. I think Bill Polian was one of the best they've had on the NFL shows and I remember Schefter interrupting him and talking over him several times.

All the dumb gimmicky segments are annoying on the NFL shows too, like the "challenge flag", "you got Mossed", etc.

Suggesting to boycott the advertisers that are the only suckers still paying full price for ESPN is only worth two weeks. What a company.
Is that what she was saying?  I thought she was calling the advertisers to boycott the Cowboys.  Did I misread that?

She suggested her fans should boycott any company that advertises in Cowboys games. Then linked to the list: AT&T, Bank of America, Dr Pepper/Snapple, Ford, Miller, Pepsi...

Those are the same companies that advertise on ESPN. If you're an ad buyer for Pepsi or Miller, are you going to buy ads on a network that supports boycotting your brand?

It's biting the hand that feeds her. No advertiser is going to be happy giving their money to ESPN while one of the "personalities" on there is telling people to not buy their stuff.
Gotcha, that makes sense.  Thanks.

Suspension was way overdue.  Every time her name is in the news it costs Disney over $1 Billion in market cap. Bob Iger, CEO of Disney and a public Democrat, has been frustrated over the whole thing and has been very patient with her but listening to him speak about it the other day I knew he would eventually pull the trigger.

There is no ESPN personality worth this much trouble these days.  SVP would be the closest I think but he's too smart to get caught up in this junk.

I agree.  Just think of when the cable bundle contracts start withering away and people will have choices to keep the NFL network and drop ESPN.  There are millions of people that don’t even watch sports that have ESPN on their cable package because Disney has that much power, but they will drop it in a heartbeat if they could save $10 a month.  There are probably a good amount of Trumpers out there that will do the same thing.

she will definitely use the race card

Bob Iger is a moron

I listen to Dan Patrick in the morning drive to work.   This morning he talked about VP Pence leaving the game as a result of kneeling during the national anthem.   he did it in such a way that to me it was kind of obvious he was taking the players side, but also in a way that didn't hammer you in the head with politics.  He's just smooth and knows how to discuss a subject without alienating 50% of his audience.

Modern "journalists" would be wise to learn how Patrick does it and copy it.

I really don't give a #### because I don't watch ESPN and I wouldn't recognize this Hill person if I saw her on TV, but it seems like any kind of real journalism outfit would be more independent of their advertisers than this.  If a reporter can't say something negative about your advertisers, then this is just a marketing network, not a media network.

Yes. But espn isn't about journalism. Embarrassed to admit I've argued with Richard deitsch about this on twitter. He thinks they are still journalists.

I think it is a little more complex than that. Sometimes espn does some real actual journalism, or analysis. There is also social commentary, occasionally, more often benign stuff, like how Sports Bring People Together.

But, at the same time, the NFL will not let you f with their money. I dont think you need a tinfoil hat to see this is the case. Hill merely suggested it, and espn made its position crystal clear.

I agree..not sure is any network is about "journalism" anymore? Everything is opinion based.

If she was actually reporting that would be one thing. Actively campaigning against sponsors out of the blue on social media has nothing to do with "real journalism" .

here is the usa today 1 spend a bunch of time being offended that someone tells you what to do or think 2 spend the rest of the day telling everyone else what to do and how to think what a great world brohans what a great world take that to the bank

He likes to think his coverage of ESPN = coverage of journalism. In reality, he writes a gossip column.
