Seems pretty smart to me. I really didn't anything about Barstool sports and had never heard of Big Cat. From I gather, this seems like a fun pissing match, and I'm now far more likely to checkout Barstool content.

Plus, it seems Barstool captures a lot traffic from those that have come to hate what ESPN has become. Most won't know or care about the affiliation, so it seems they can diversify the portfolio without really upsetting anybody too seriously. 

 
I'm bailing on the website now too.  I got there for box scores, but now that basketball season is here they are going to force Lavar Ball on people and I can't do it.

Big night in sports last night and they have Lavar Ball as a headline.  Its trash.

I turned on SC with the hope they would show me some highlights of the Blues game. What was I thinking? Hockey might as well be equestrian arts to them. BUT, they did show extensive parts of the Lavar Ball presser after a game in which he scored exactly 4 points. 

Reminds me of the Reggie Bush coverage back in the day. They would show his two amazing runs but forgot to say he finished with 8 carries for 16 yards because the other six carries he got tackled behind the LOS. 

What was I thinking trying to see hockey anyway? If it weren't for college football on Sunday, I would remove them from my channel list. And yet every few years they hold a cable provider hostage to raise their rates!

247 Sports ran ESPN out of college football recruiting and offering a team specific online resource...and now has a monopoly (recently swallowed up Scout).  Where consumers want content, ESPN will lose.

Whatever floats your boat. I have memories of a time when this place wasn't so polarized. The ol swcer was a part of those memories, still is, just sad its come to this.

I didn't realize espn was a political party. 

So people can make countless incorrect posts over how much money and viewership espn is losing but then swc can't make a hilarious post about how dumb that is without you calling it political? :confused:

I feel like I'm missing something here. My understanding is they gave a show to PFT Commenter (who I love) and some other Barstool guy who's not really one of the ridiculous dooshbags but occasionally plays along with them, including joining him on some juvenile dooshbaggery re: Sam Ponder on one occasion.  Is that accurate?  If so, what the heck changed between last week and now?

You didn't miss anything. The show that aired was completely harmless. The two of them are very much clean enough for cable TV. 

 
Wonder how much longer the pardon my take guys stay there. Big Cat seems loyal to the brand, but PFTC is a sharp dude who knows that name is staining his very hard worked for rep. He's waaaaaay bigger than barstool.

They have long term contracts and Katz owns a small piece of the company (his contract is supposedly the longest there). Getting them out won't be cheap.

That lasted a long time.  Was the Big Cat and PFTC prank calling Jason Kidd on Rusillo's show last week the last straw?

Listen to the podcast today. PFTC doesn't seem too pleased. Said he wanted the show to be called Pardon My Take to continue the brand, but Portnoy wanted the Barstool name attached. PFTC said he knew that would create a real problem, and he was right. 

He's not going to be there long imo.

Heard it too. Considering Sam Ponder thought Pres was Big Cat when she fired off that tweet, I don't think having the show called PMT instead would have prevented her from trying to get the show cancelled before it started.

No but the implication was that it would have just been something else. He kept referring to how he figured it would get canceled, even without knowing of the ponder thing.

Their strategy makes no sense and it's time we stop trying to bring logic to what they do. I'm with him in believing they get a ton of value out of the cheap programming, because it allows for them to take what is said on one show and blow that out on Twitter, push it to the next show, get their take, and move on to the next program, rinse and repeat. 

But they fire people and then give multi-million raises to a choad like Mike Greenberg to run a show that no one thinks will work, because ESPN doesn't even know what they are going for with it well over a year into coming up with the concept. And then commit to an enormous expensive studio in downtown NYC. 

 
Did you guys really spend that much time watching ESPN a decade or two ago that this matters to you?

I mean, I watched actual sports, and I watched Sports Center for scores and news. Plenty of times I would tune in for an NFL Live or something like that where it was really focused on a sport of interest.  A few times I might have watched a show like PTI, but not very often.

Today?  I still watch sports there. I get my scores off the web because it is more convenient and I don't have to sit through stuff I don't care about.  Plenty of times I still tune in for an NFL Live if it's on. I might watch PTI a little still, but none of the other shows.

So the horrible format they've gone to on the other shows has basically made me drop 5% of my previous ESPN viewing that was devoted to non-games, non-sports center.  The rest of my ESPN viewing that dropped, dropped because I can pull it up on the web much faster and move through the news at my own pace and skipping stuff I don't care about.

 
I sometimes am forced to have exposure to mike/mike. They have espn on in the coffee shop/snack thing near my office.  

I've never really understood their appeal at all.

Oh, I agree that they get tons of mileage out of it, but is it really worth anything? To read the comments on here there a sizable quantity that have no use for it. I’d love to know the demographics of the viewers those debate shows get and the intensity of their fandom.

I enjoy Mike and Mike. If there is anything major going on in the world of sports they will be talking to the key people involved before anyone else. I know the banter is crap, but I get it. My inner dork shares some things with Greenie and my outer mans man, can relate to Golic.

I mean up until this last year or so (see Greenberg example above) I would trust that was the exact reason for why they would pay SAS $3 million a year and Bayless $3MM on top of that, and they were willing to go up to $5MM or whatever for Skip until Fox went beyond that. Most executives at multi-billion $$ companies don't renew contracts and then pay more if they aren't earning the right ROI. 

 
ESPN can't afford Monday Night Football

The most important information is saved for last:

ESPN is the sports version of Blockbuster Video.

Because, ultimately, what is ESPN’s business otherwise? Just like Blockbuster Video it takes the content that other people create and rents them to viewers. The only real assets it has are sports rights agreements. And none of those are permanent. ESPN is just a middle man like Blockbuster. HBO can make money off “Game of Thrones” forever, Netflix can do the same with “Stranger Things,” but once the NFL leaves ESPN, the network retains nothing at all. That’s because ESPN doesn’t actually make anything of lasting value.

It’s MTV when music videos went to YouTube, Blockbuster when movies went to streaming.

ESPN owes its existence to highlights and now highlights are available everywhere for free. Even worse, ESPN’s killer app, the key to its business, used to be that it offered the sports leagues a way to distribute their content to the masses. But, guess what, every league can do that on its own now for much lower costs.

So what will ESPN do to save its business? They should be scrambling to try and create must watch original programming, they need the “Stranger Things” of sports. That is, shows that they actually own that make people want to subscribe to the network and create lasting value. Instead they’re busy turning into MSESPN, a left wing sports TV network that no one wants to watch.

Right now no ESPN show has a shelf life of longer than 24 hours unless you count the 30 for 30’s. (And those have virtually no long term value. It’s not like people binge watch 30 for 30’s).

That’s the exact opposite of most of what Disney has tried to do in recent years — buy up Marvel for all the superhero films, buy George Lucas’s company for all the Star Wars assets, what does ESPN actually own? A ton of fixed costs on studios and employees that mostly have no value.

And another reason, they employ on air racist (non) talent such as Jamal, jemel, jimile Hill or whatever her name is along with Bomani Jones. He may be worse than her if that's possible.

Interesting that you say this, because I've always found PFTC to be pretty funny and the entire rest of Barstool to be trash.  I'm all for dumb humor, I love stupid ####, but Barstool has always just come off as ultra-bro-ey cringworthy trying-way-too-hard and frankly just not very funny.  I have some friends who love it....I just don't get it.  PFTC though, A+.

I used to like Bomani on Around the Horn.  I can't get through a LeBetard show and never listened to Bomani's.
