***The Super Bowl XLV Thread*** - Green Bay vs. Pittsburgh (1 Viewer)

Why would Goodell make a comment right before the SB that none of Ben's teammates "went to his defense" when he interviewed them before the season started?

The week of the SB is enough of a circus as it is, why contribute this bit of information so that Ben has to answer even more questions about it?
I missed this. Do you have a quick link?

© The other big topic here was Peter King's quote in his Monday Morning Quarterback from commissioner Roger Goodell about Ben Roethlisberger.Goodell said he spoke to around two dozen Steelers about Roethlisberger this summer, but none of them would defend the QB.Of course, Goodell said it was mostly due to things such as Roethlisberger not signing jerseys for them or things like that.Defensive end Brett Keisel, one of Roethlisberger's best friends on the team, said he was asked about Roethlisberger by the commissioner and really didn't know what to say about the line of questioning. For his part, Roethlisberger was caught off guard by the whole thing, expressing some shock about the questions from reporters about the report following his media session. The Steelers were pretty much caught off guard by the whole thing and one does have to question the timing of it.
Good on the rest of the Steelers for not supporting Ben during his investigation of being a sexual predator. I wouldn't support him either. Obviously there was something to it even though he was never charged otherwise he would not have been suspended. To be fair, the Packers best defensive lineman from 2010 Johnny Jolly was suspended without a trial too. But he doesn't get to play. Did he ever have his trial?
Way to miss the point.
What am I missing? Seriously. The timing? Are you saying the league is trying to sabotage the Steelers of all teams?

Maybe that it was inappropriate for Goodell to be talking about the details of the investigation with Peter King, period. Also, the fact that he was suspended doesn't mean there's "something to it." He was suspended for questionable judgment. If the league had read that report and thought he was guilty of rape, it wouldn't have been a 4-game suspension. They were sending a message that players can't be embarrassing the league publicly. If there was "something to it", why wasn't he charged? They charged Kobe Bryant with rape for God's sake.

What I actually came in here to post is that I don't think I've heard 1 talking head yet pick Pittsburgh in this game. Not one. Probably heard 10 picks on the game from Chris Russo to **** Vitale and it's been 100% Packers picks. I like this.

If there was nothing to it, he would not have been suspended. We can play this game all day. What was his poor judgment? Going to a club? Seriously? Is he the only NFL player that went to a club?

Peter King issues a clarification: Goodell on Roethlisberger sanction
Sloppy journalism. I also wonder why Goodell thought it was important that some NFL players being unsupportive of Roethlisberger for not signing jerseys should have any bearing in deciding the suspension. Then again most of Goodell's decisions have seemed odd to me.

The DA stated that he did not have enough evidence that a sexual assualt had even occured. If Goodell had more evidence to the contrary then he was morally obligated to share that with the DA. Roethlisberger was suspended because boorish behavior was becoming an embarrassment to the NFL.......and also, according to Peter King, because he didn't sign some players jerseys.

I gotta admit that as someone who is picking GB this makes me nervous. I've seen them all be wrong before. Tony Dorsett picked Pitt, but then that's where he came from...

Myself, I have seen quite a few picking Pittsburgh. That's as it should be. This is a "pick 'em" game. I have high hopes as a Packer fan, but would not be at all surprised by a Pittsburgh win. They are a fine franchise, experienced in this game, and they have more weapons than some think. It is true that the Packers 3 & 4 W.R. are somewhat more experienced, and are very good, but Pitt has some up and coming guys there, Sanders and Brown as I recall, and they have been making plays.

I do see some desire for each team's fan base to hope their team can gain a motivational edge through the disrespect card, but the effort is actually less than I have ever seen for a superbowl. Frankly I don't see it happening. I think the teams respect each other and that the fans do as well. I think both teams will find all the motivation and challenge they need just looking across the line of scrimmage.

Go Pack!

I have a feeling winning this game is Green Bay's destiny. Its the perfect ending to a historic run. Much like when Denver beat them in the Super Bowl, this just seems like it is going to happen.

Could be though the same could be said for the Steelers. This team had quite a few setbacks that made a return to the SB very unlikely.

True. Hey, end of the day these are two VERY good football teams. It could go either way - and anyone who says differently is probably biased. I can't wait for kickoff.

And interesting that in all of these threads, the fans of both of these teams seem to be the ones knowing it could go either way...while others are the ones piling on the Packers will win big or Steelers will win for sure kind of posts.

Both of these teams have shown they are capable of playing a great game, or of throwing up a clunker. Neither played a great game in the championship games. They each played a great half and then hung on. So I can see this game going in just about any direction imaginable.I still give the edge to the Steelers because of their SB experience. Most of them have been here before, many of them twice before.

Whoever executes better(barring key injuries) will probably win this game

Thought this was interesting, Bentley seems to think Ben has issues reading a defense.

Pouncey plans to practice, hopes to play

Today - 1:40 PM ET

Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey (ankle) plans to practice by Thursday or Friday and still believes he has a chance to play in the Super Bowl.

Pouncey has ditched his hard cast and is walking around Media Day in a boot, which is at least a sign of tangible progress. After seemingly conceding days ago that his ankle was fractured, he's now insisting that it's merely sprained. This could be gamesmanship by the Steelers. We'll have a better read on Pouncey's status after practice reports reel in on Thursday and Friday.

Sometimes I believe starters hurt their teams by trying to play with significant injuries. I appreciate he is very talented. I just doubt that he at 80% is as good as his backup. Taking practice reps, much needed practice reps, from a backup in a futile attempt to make the field for a few plays before reinjury occurs strikes me as foolish, selfish, and countrproductive to the team effort.

That said I love it when Willis Reed takes the floor of the Garden or when Reggie White insists that God healed him.

I guess it is a fine line between selfish and foolish on the one hand and inspirational on the other.

Legursky is a second-year undrafted free agent guard who played 3 quarters at center all season and in that time, managed to botch a snap so badly that it cost the team a safety and nearly a trip to this very game.Pouncey is the first rookie to make the Pro Bowl at center since 1955, and was voted 2nd team All-Pro at age 21..

Clearly, if Pouncey can play, he's going to play. If he's not well enough to start, they'll de-activate him and call up a a practice squad player. I just think they need another day or so to test it out. If he at 80% isn't better than Legursky, they'd have already de-activated him. Legursky has been taking all the reps since Pouncey went down.

It is a tough choice. Legursky, if he is needed, obviously needs the practice time. It all still comes down to whether Pouncey can play. Because he he goes out there at 80% against BJ Raji, he's going to get his lunch handed to him. I hope he is healthy enough to give it a go. It will make for a better game.

The only reason the Steelers have more rings is they didn't start the Super Bowl til the Packers were an aging team.

If they started it in 1960 we'd have several more rings.

1961 – Packers 37, Giants 0 (Lambeau Field, Green Bay)

In his third season as head coach, Vince Lombari led his team to the championship game for the second stright year. The Packers broke open a scoreless game with 24 points in the second quarter and never looked back in a 37-0 shutout of the Giants in Green Bay. Paul Hornung, on leave from the U.S. Army scored 19 points (3 FG, 1 TD, 4 PAT). Starr threw for three touchdowns and finished with 125 yards on 9-of-23 passing.

1962 – Packers 16, Giants 7 (Yankee Stadium, New York)

A cold and windy day led to a low-scoring affair in New York, a rematch of the '62 title game. Jerry Kramer kicked three field goals while Jim Taylor's seven-yard touchdown run proved the difference in the Packers' 16-7 victory -- Lombardi's second NFL Championship.

1965 – Packers 23, Browns 12 (Lambeau Field)

In the last NFL Championship Game before the Super Bowl era, the Packers held a one-point lead at halftime and kept Cleveland scoreless over the final two quarters to win their third title under Lombardi. The Packers ran for 204 yards in the game and held Browns running back Jim Brown -- playing his final NFL game -- to just 50 yards.

Whether you were born or not, they were still championships, were they not? Or because you weren't born yet does the NFL wipe them off the books?

No, they all count. But they aren't Super Bowls. And I'm not sure what any of it has to do with Sunday's game.

They absolutely all count, but the difference among championships isn't just whether there was a game called the Super Bowl or not. It stands to reason, at least to most people, that the number of teams competing for a championship is relevant to how big of an accomplishment it is to win it.The 1961, 1962 and 1965 Packers were champions out of a pool of 14 teams. The 1966 and 1967 Packers were champions out of a pool of 24 and 25 teams, respectively. And of course, the 1996 Packers were champions out of a pool of 30 teams. Those are differing accomplishments, even though they all absolutely count. It can also be pointed out that the 1961 and 1962 Packers played and won only one playoff game, whereas the 1967 Packers played and won three. Again, differing accomplishments. How about if we all agree that both franchises are historically great but that they have achieved their legendary status by different meaningful championship accomplishments? It works for me.

I was joking and testing. If I was dealing with Cowboys fans they'd be all over those old championships but you are right. The Steelers are the 6th oldest franchise. Until 1970 you didn't win much but after that won a lot more consistently than we did.Now we are doing better(since Wolf/Holmgren) and hope we meet a lot in the future now that we "borrowed" your defense.

I re-watched the second half of the Steelers-Jets game the other day and I didn't think Legursky was all that bad. I'm assuming the bad snaps are easily correctable over two weeks of practice. He's not going to be confused with a pro-bowl center and will likely need some help with Raji, perhaps more than Pouncey would need, but he's scrappy and I think a decent fill-in if Pouncey can't go.

Agreed. He isn't Pouncey but aside from the couple botched snaps I thought he did a decent job. Remember that Pouncey went down at the end of the drive so the Steelers were still able to move the ball and score with Legursky in there.

Hoge made some sense this morning on Mike and Mike about the whole Pouncey thing though.

How often is Raji lined up just over center?

The Packers run out of their nickle set quite often (actually, a strong majority of the time they are in the 4-2-5), and he was wondering how much Raji is just over center or more over a guard or in that gap.

My counter to that will be where a newer guy may struggle is in helping with Raji, will he recognize and pick up a twisting blitz from Hawk and Bishop...or when Matthews comes around inside on his rush.

Good post, I was thinking more or less the same thing while re-watching the Packers Bears game.

What I actually came in here to post is that I don't think I've heard 1 talking head yet pick Pittsburgh in this game. Not one. Probably heard 10 picks on the game from Chris Russo to **** Vitale and it's been 100% Packers picks. I like this.
 Talking heads, experts, the public...all nuthugging GB. I love it! Can't wait until the Steelers prove everyone wrong. This week is draaaaaaaaagging.

Good luck with that. Green Bay is going to win the game.

:lmao: Love your "matter of fact" attitude. See you on Sunday night around 10:00.

Bob Papa was saying this morning that this was the closest point spread in a Super Bowl since 1984. Anyone verify this?

Steelers center Pouncey sheds walking boot, crutches

Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey was not wearing a walking boot on his sprained left ankle, nor was he using crutches before the team left their Fort Worth hotel for practice at Texas Christian University on Wednesday.

Pouncey, who on Tuesday told NFL Network analyst Deion Sanders that his chances of playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday were 75 percent, stood by that assertion on Wednesday.

Pouncey, who was selected to the Pro Bowl in his rookie season, sustained a high ankle sprain early in the Steelers' AFC Championship Game victory over the New York Jets on Jan. 23. He did not practice at all last week, but he said Tuesday he hoped to take the field Thursday or Friday.

So other than whether or not Pouncey plays, are we pretty much out of things to talk about?
I'm too nervous and my thoughts are constantly changing. I go from thinking this will be a close game to the Packers are going to light up our secondary to our D will shut them down and Mendenhall and Wallace go nuts. I've imagined everything from a 1 point game to a 21 point win and a 21 point loss.

 Same as I feel. I felt that way with the Jets too for some reason.
