The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the TOP 10!! (21 Viewers)

Ok, I can't watch the Mariners, so how about a preview mini list for the evening? @Ilov80s and I are going to supplement the main draft with other fun lists and suggestions for movies. Yes, now you know a few movies that won't be on the list, so we will spoil things that way, but often it will also lead up to an upcoming pick. Anyway, in honor of The Peanut Butter Falcon, about this one:

Movies I loved but almost didn't watch because I thought the title was stupid.

  • Everybody Wants Some!! Don't know why I was so annoyed by this title, but also Linklater is very hit or miss with me. This is the spiritual cousin to Dazed as it follows a team of baseball players in the days leading up to the first day of college. I enjoy it more than Dazed. My first intro to Glen Powell, I believe [mgm+]
First, why can't you see the M's game? Probably for the best....looking ugly.

But, regarding this movie, I think we've discussed this in the past. This one left me possibly the most disappointed I've ever been for a "sequel". I actually disliked this one.
It said it was blacked out when I went to mlb, so I assumed it was on ESPN

Keep in context that I am a rare person around here who doesn't like Dazed much. Despite less variety, I liked hanging out with this group of people more than the Dazed crowd.

PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN - 28PTS

Maybe not a movie for Dan, might be too heavy handed. I thought it was quite good and left a lot to think about. I believe @krista4 liked it as well. A young woman who was a victim of sexual assault turns things around hunting male predators.

Yes, loved this movie, and no, you won't drag me into this thread again. I'm sure you had plenty of negative reactions to this from people who've never seen it.

Haha you did catch me there but actually people did seem to like Promising Young Woman. The thread is sort of designed for posters like you and eephus (who is on vacation) so the absence is noticeable. I hope you reconsider.

ouch
I just mean they have been long time regulars in the movie thread. Honestly it was Krista, eephus, el floppo and KP who got me to watch foreign movies. I was pretty out of touch with them but they made some great recommendations and it changed my viewing habits. So I do owe a bit of this to them.

#117: BLADE RUNNER 2049 - 34PTS

Love it. Those names and you are a big reason I watch so many classic movies, especially noirs.

very odd pairing tomorrow morning to start the day. Hints:

I am not a tattoo guy, but this pick from 80s features some of the best I've seen yet
somebody got survival lessons from The Empire Strikes Back

BR2049 should be much higher.

Now excuse me as I jump in the Wayback Machine and watch Buster Keaton in The Cameraman.
That is on me. I love the look, sound, design but it just doestn't entertain me quite enough relative to the original. KP was the one who got BR2049 this high. He even questioned me thinking it was an oversight not having BR2049 down for my list.

I will say it's not flawless, just ambitious.

As beautiful as she is, Ana de Armas' character Joi really is unnecessary. And due to it's underperforming at the box office, the Replicant faction is also superfluous - I'm sure there were plans to make another movie to resolve the human/android conflict somehow.

But it looks great and adds some emotional weight to the story arc that I really like.

MOANA - 35PTS

THE REVENANT - 35PTS also on @The Dreaded Marco 's list

Hints for the next trio:

If at first you don't succeed - try, try again
the risks of pandering to your audience?
a rare sports movie that is on my list, and according to @Ilov80s , it is the lowest rated movie on this list. :sadbanana:

THE REVENANT - 35PTS
This has been on my list forever to watch - big fan of Leo and Tom Hardy, so I need to get to this.
I just watched it the first time this summer, and I have rewatched it since (a little bit last night). I am still not sure how they pulled this madness off. This was one of the surprises on my list from 80s - that I liked it enough that it jumped to #66 for me.

I wouldn't expect that one to be Andy approved
I always figured "Best Moaning and/or Grunting" was a criteria for a completely different awards show.
Not sure the situation called for much monologing. ;)
And neither did it call for a Best Actor award.
I agree for the most part, but its just like the Academy to reward an actor for big transformations and/or putting themselves through the ringer. My love is more about the direction and how amazing the movie looked. Imo Leo is geeat in it, and has the ability to relay thougts and emotions just through his eyes and face. I would give awards to more overall performances like he does in other movies of the era. One of the best there is.

MOANA - 35PTS

Kids movie, yeah yeah I know but the songs are awesome, the animation looks gorgeous (the water and hair especially gets me). It's by far the best use of The Rock in any movie. The dumb little chicken cracks me up and Jermaine from Flgiht of the Conchord is such a good villain, best part of the movie. Moana 2 is an entirely different story. What a clunker that is.
THE REVENANT - 35PTS also on @The Dreaded Marco 's list
I also recently watched this for the first time. It was better than I expected but was not top 100 worthy for me. As for the Leo Best Actor thing, he benefited from a weak weak line-up. Eddie Redmayne in the Danish Girl after having won the year prior? Nope. Fassbender for Steve Jobs? Cranston as Dalton Trumbo? I guess I would have voted Matt Damon for The Martian. The best movies that year IMO were more ensemble pieces without a great lead actor performance.

No - NOT the Baumbach one!! Easily one of the most watched and quoted movies of the KP household, and another that started off with me randomly watching it at the store and thinking it was funny. Duvall and Ditka are great in this. The other day my daughter got a little grumpy because she wanted to watch it and couldn't find it. A core dumb family movie that had to be on my countdown.

KICKING AND SCREAMING - 36PTS

Oh I get it! They showed all the Will Ferrell parts in the trailer and saved the actual funny parts for the movie! Smart.
:excited:
:<_<:
I’m a little surprised by that one, I just admit. I like Will Ferrell in some things but this movie seemed like a throw away movie with a few chuckles.

Since generally you don’t like comedies I’m surprised this one is an exception.

AMERICAN FICTION - 37PTS (ON BOTH OUR LISTS)
I saw this on a plane also, but in a time period where everyone gets their own screens and choices.

It was so much better than I anticipated even. So funny and clever premise.

Next we have a 3 way tie - one on both lists, then one from each of us.

A movie in a favorite genre, with my favorite lead, by a young director I dig - wtf haven't I watched this yet?
A director I had on my list already dipping his toes in a blockbuster franchise and making the best entry
movie by a director from last night starring an actress from the trio of movies I just posted.

This is false. I don't like the 70s/early 80s comedies which is where this rep comes from as we debate "greatest" ever comedies. I had about 50+ on my list I had to narrow down and all my family/animated movies make me laugh along with my horror/comedies and even movies like Edge of Tomorrow. Having comedy in my movies is essential. Yes, I like bleak dramas but they are a small % of what I watch, and even some of those I have scenes I laugh at.

Yes, it's not a great movie, but we and I still love it. Now go get me a Juicebox!
