The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the TOP 10!! (43 Viewers)

I was going to rewatch that because it was on the Big Picture's top 25 countdown, but saw Tilda was in it and decided to watch anything else.
She has a smaller part in it and plays a very normal person. Clooney is great but the late Tom Wilkinson gives one of the great performances of the century.

The story behind Megalopolis is wild. Coppola conceived the idea in 1977 and wrote the first draft of the script in 1983 but couldn't get any studio to finance it. Many years later, he financed it himself with proceeds from his wine business. It made back like one-tenth of its budget.
Guy wasted several family generations of money on it too. Something like $130 million plus whatever he spent to market it. Costner did a similar thing with his Horizons movies.
At least Sofia has made her own money.

KP hates Tilda Swinton?

Odd. I have seen several of her movies and have no strong feelings about her either way.

I'll have to get over it at some point, since I do want to watch this one again and others that she is in. There are just a handful of actors that I just dislike enough that I will avoid things they are in when I can. Jeremy Renner and Tilda Swinton are main ones, but I've had to loosen up on Renner for a few movies. Jesse Plemons is getting there, and I think Kate McKinnon and Rebel Wilson are terribly unfunny so I avoid them, but that is not too hard to do. I know there are others.

What I was going to post about PTA and The Master is also that it just happens to be that my favorite directors work with actors I also love to see. Phoenix isn't popular, but he always captivates me, PSH, DDL, John C. Reiley, Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, etc.. Those are people I will watch in anything as well, so since it's largely a Phoenix/Hoffman duel that has me 50% from the start. There are a lot of other actors I will try to see as much as I can from, and they are all over this countdown, and 80s can share stats at the end.

#54: PARASITE - 77PTS

#24 on Ilov80s' list also on @The Dreaded Marco 's list.
It seemed like not everyone here liked it but if I had to pick 1 movie from the 2nd half of the decade that is mostly likely to end up in the "movie cannon" in 10,20,50 years it is Parasite. I loved how it was like 5 different movies in one and the big shifts that happen as things are revealed. The shock in the middle was one of the great WTF moments in recent movies. I am not quite on board with so many critics who already consider it one of the best movies ever made but it's a ton of fun, extremely rewatachable and full of very memorable moments.
What's the difference between will be cannon in a decade and people already calling it one of the best ever? I didn't like it but it's also possible that I didn't really "get it"

Nothing to do with acting skills or movies, either. Her are Renner are just people I don't care to look at and think are creepy. They just bug me as soon as they show up on screen.

Maybe nothing. I guess I just meant I think it will stand the test of time and become one of those movies that keeps putting really high on lists of best ever the way a Vertigo or Silence of the Lambs does.

Probably used some of dad's to get that started but she has actually done well with it. So has Nic Cage who is what, her cousin?

#49: MICHAEL CLAYTON - 80PTS

#21 on Ilov80s' list.
Do people like this? Have you all seen it? Thought maybe this is a movie that fits the demographic here pretty well given the legal thriller, big name on it and coming out in 2007.

lol same for me. I don’t care for cate blanchette either

Rebels ok though

Am I the only one who hated Sideways?

Fantastic performances by all of the principal actors, but I just hated it.
What did you not like about it?
I was bored the entire time. I didn't find a single character likeable (kinda the point, I know) and a single thing about the movie, its characters or the plot interesting.
I don't think I laughed once the entire film.
Not a big wine guy, so maybe I missed some of the humor surrounding that.
This one just wasn't for me. I know plenty of people who love it.
I know several people who don’t like Sideways, most for this reason.

I laugh out loud many times while watching it. I actually find Miles a sympathetic character and Giamatti plays him perfectly. And he does show significant character development throughout the film.

Jack is a terrible guy and a great character and Thomas Haden Church plays him just so.

I tend to love movies with unlikable characters when they are portrayed well, as in this film.

Michael Clayton brings this to my attention, there are a few movies on the list with bad or just questionable titles. Here is what I would have chose instead.

  • Edge of Tomorrow: This had a whole weird thing where they put the words Live.Die.Repeat. on the poster larger than the title and people thought it was the title and when they put the DVD out they used both titles. This should have just been called Live.Die.Repeat. It's more interesting and gives a better sense of the movie compared to the very generic Edge of Tomorrow that sounds like any of a million 1940s Hollywood noirs. Out of the Past, Shadow of a Doubt, Edge of Tomorrow

  • The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford: It's just too darn long, bad marketing. Call it The Assassination of Jesse James.

  • The Irishman: It's based on a book called I Heard You Paint Houses and if you watch the movie, I believe that's what the opening title card says. That's what the movie is called.

  • Michael Clayton: It just sounds boring to be honest. It gives no hint as to what it's about. In Japan they called it The Fixer which is absolutely what it should have been here as well.

It was like he directed all of his actors to play their characters as if they were Batman villains.

I saw it when it came out on DVD. Really liked it a lot. Agree on the acting. I don’t remember much anymore but I know I liked it enough to revisit.

:lmao: I have the same unexplainable feeling about Benedict Cumberbatch.

The guys in Sideways are taking a trip to where I live. It's kind of funny. It used to be this desolate area and for some reason they have wineries now. Okay. That's cool by me.

10 points to 80s!
I came to this recent conclusion when I recently tried to watch Furiosa - the entire Mad Max universe makes no sense and is not entertaining in the least to me.
I came to this recent conclusion that your opinions suck

Buellton or Solvang?

You know what? It's neither. Pardon me. I don't think our town had anything to do with it. Huh. A touch embarrassing. I messed up. Thanks for asking!

I saw it for the first time recently. I liked it a lot. I didn't quite understand the lawsuit details, but the film isn't really about that anyway.I thought Clooney and Swinton were very good but, as noted above, Wilkinson wins the movie.

I think the Mad Max series in general is overrated or at least not for me. The exception is Fury Road. That’s just one of the best pure action movies ever made. It’s one long impossible car chase. It’s sort of a modern day version of The General in the sense that once the chase starts it never stops and it’s pretty much the whole movie and nobody can understand how it was filmed without a bunch of people being maimed and killed. Very little is said too, could have been a silent movie. Pure cinema.

I get all that, and I have come to not hate the movie, but for me there is no nuggets of good fun ideas for me to hang on to. I am more in line with Andy - it makes no sense, and I don't enjoy watching for very long. Maybe like you said, in the end it's just a big car chase scene, and that's not really something that usually grabs my attention for too long.

I feel I fell behind on pimping my selections.

Is there anybody who hates Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil? I think it has a 100% hit from people I work with from all ages, and I am pretty sure it's popular here even with the non-horror crowd as well . Another movie with a lot of laughs for me, and this one has a good heart at the center of the movie. I can't see it being knocked out of the core October rotation anytime soon.

About Time is yet another that makes me laugh a lot and also gets me choked up. The "groundhog day" movies have been shoved down our throats quite a bit over the last decade or so, but I like the core idea here and what the rules of the time travel are. I have grown to dislike the other Richard Curtis rom/com he directed but this one still hits. I am surprised I don't have more Rachel McAdams on my countdown. Bill Nighy great as always as well.

I don't care about cars - looking at them, fixing them, racing them. They get me from A to B. I think that says something about Ford v Ferarri's ability to pull me in and make me watch it mulitple times. A lot has to do with Christian Bale - yet another actor who I like a lot of movies from during this century. Damon and the side characters are great, the action is great, it was fun in the theater, and I laugh a bit. Ford crying in the car is a scene that always gets a laugh from me and is a favorite scene of this era for me.

Echo a lot of the same thoughts about The Fighter. I don't really care about boxing a ton either, but I realized when I was doing the list how many times I have watched this movie - and again, it has yet to get old. Bale is great as usual, but I also really like Adams and Melissa Leo in this one. I was a little surprised at the end that this landed in the top 20, but I wanted all the movie I own and repeat watch the most in that range. I think there are only 5 movies in my top 40 I don't own, so those are at the top of my buy list to track down on 4k.

The Witch was a favorite as soon as I saw it. I loved the setting and atmosphere, and it genuinely creeped me out. Eggers is a bit of a nut when it comes to attention to detail, but I appreciate that here. The weird language and attention to detail with the buildings and lighting really puts me there with William and his family. Taylor-Joy in her first role as Thomasin is fantastic, but I also love the parents and the twins crack me up. My favorite complaint at the video store about this one was that it was stupid because you didn't see the witch.

So many of @Ilov80s' movies near the top are ones that I saw, remembered thinking were damn good, but didn't get a rewatch for the countdown. Banshees is another one along with Past Lives, Micheal Clayton, The Florida Project, Parasite, Lives of Others, and Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

There are a lot of themes of time and memory in our movies today. It looks like at least 3 we will get to today has this as a core theme. We will also have a workplace comedy, some historical fiction, and teens trying to score. We might not have as many picks today. I want to have plenty of time to smell the roses and appreciate every blade of grass on our journey.

#44: THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN - 84PTS

#17 on Ilov80s' list
This was beyond depressing. I watched it with a couple others before our Ireland trip and it was a unanimous decision to turn it off about halfway through. One of the worst movie experiences in a long time.
