The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the TOP 10!! (5 Viewers)

I could pick a few nits with this list (Empire is the best, A New Hope second, etc., and I'd bump up Rogue One) but this largely has it correct.

Episode 3 at no. 7 might be a little high, but I'll allow it.
Tomatometer, in a word...sucks.
You're agreeing with the guy who thinks Shawshank is overrated, loves American cheese and Chaddyshack II.
Even blind squirrels pick up nuts once in a while.

The new SW besides R1 mostly look like crap and are terribly acted top to bottom. I think nostalgia and loving the series clouded my judgement the first time through the newer sequels.

Ep3 is Revenge of the Sith, a prequel... And yes I think it's "that" good.

There are no sequels. There are three garage movies masquerading as Star Wars but they can be put in a rubbish bin.

What do you like about Ep. 3?

Another thing about it is that imo it is a pretty good cherry on top of a **** sundae. Its not a stand alone movie like R1, so it can be forgotten with the rest. I was surprised how terrible the acting and cgi was in 3 as well. It is better because it is darker and we see the rise of Vader but my point above stands.

Enough Star Wars talk. Time for a movie made by a real director. ;)
Well THAT I won't argue about.
Edit: Wait...

To answer your question about Ep3 - I like the last half, specifically, because the a) ship finally hits the sand and it isn't kid's play anymore, b) Obi Wan is my favorite Star Wars character and his tragic schism with Anakin is actually emotional, and c) it has some of John Williams' best work.

Gotcha, I agree for the most part on a and C, but I on the last watch I didn't think the acting was good enough to land the emotion for the Obi/Skywalker break and forgot how bad the cg is during the lava fight. Still the 2nd best from the 00s on, though.

I assume you mean when they're on the platforms in the lava. Can't disagree with that either. But I've come to overlook the flaw.

#25: HEREDITARY -96PTS

#5 on KP's list.
IMDB says this was influenced by The Innocents (1961). Seeing that I may have to check this one out.
But then I also see it was influenced by the film The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989)...and then I'm filled with trepidation again.

Yeah, when they are on the platforms going through the lava. Part could have been my mood after watching the prequel in short order and I just wanted them to be done. It's pretty sad how excited I was that my daughter wants to watch female Ghostbusters next before another Star Wars movie. I am not looking forward to watching Ep. 9 and finishing this series.

Prediction: you will dislike it.

I am not sure that the movie is influenced by the 2nd one, but Aster brings up seeing that movie and Carrie all the time in interviews and how scenes stuck with him and haunted him in his teens. IMO it's his love of 70s horror and movies with family trauma like Bergman's that I see in Hereditary. I saw another list with things like Carrie, Don't Look Now, Rosemary's Baby, etc.. that I can see. BUT it is still with a harder edge and violence and is a difficult watch. It instantly became a favorite horror movie after I saw it, but it took me about a year to muster up the courage to watch it again.

Hereditary plays more like a family drama as they grieve, especially Toni Collette. It is a tough watch, but it is also a great rewatch seeing how everything was set up from the start and how all the stories and weirdness fits into place. I still don't love the last couple minutes, but was still great enough up until that point to become my favorite horror movie of this century so far. The direction is off the charts as well as things and people linger in the shadows and I love the cut from the beginning with the dollhouse into the real scene. This was the start of my Ari Aster love and the only hiccup so far for me was parts of Beau. Eddington is my favorite movie so far this year, so that will replace Beau on my list.

Next 2 will be my solo picks. #5 and #4 on my list. Favorite horror movie and favorite sequel. Probably not hard to guess either. My #2 might be the hardest of them to guess.
Was hoping this was going to be House of 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects.
I did like both. Haven't seen either for awhile though. Isnt Rainn Wilson in 1000 Corpses?
Yes he is.

I enjoy Rejects much more than Corpses, with the flip of the storytelling being from the psychopaths perspective rather than the victims... but the first should be seen before the second.

Hereditary was really good and I’m not a huge horror fan. I think it’s responsible for horror trends I don’t care for but I’m not going to hold that against Hereditary.

I would probably watch his movies more if his wife wasn't in them.

What do you mean by this?
The shift to horror movies being “artsy” and about family trauma and grief.

There’s a place for that stuff but sometimes I just want a monster chasing teenagers for no reason.
I will think on that more, but I can't think of too many examples offhand since Hereditary. I think its one of the better known recent ones, but i thought the trend was there before Hereditary as well.

@Ilov80s - do you think Andy will like Hereditary?

I assumed Andy had seen it and that was part of his hatred of A24 movies. Just Midsommar, @Andy Dufresne ?
I’m not a good predictor of what people like or don’t but I strongly disliked Midsommar while really liking Hereditary and finding it quite scary and shocking.
What did you hate about Midsommar? I found it much lighter and funnier than Hereditary after they get to Sweden. As Aster jokes, its just a break up movie.

It definitely could be, might just have been the first time I saw and noticed it. I’m certainly not an expert on horror by any stretch.

#26: TOP GUN: MAVERICK - 96PTS

#89 on Ilov80s' list and #17 on KP's list.
I’m one of the few people on Earth that did not care for this movie. I do not get the hype at all.
Did you like the original?
Not as much as most people but I did like the first one - although I haven't watched it in years.

Part of my issue with the sequel was it wasn't really any different from the original.

I thought both X and Pearl were pretty dumb. I didn't even try MaXXXine.

I Saw The TV Glow, The Green Knight, and After Yang were just tepid.

I outright disliked Civil War.

I couldn't make it through Marcel the Shell.

The ones I DID like
Enemy
Ex Machina
The Disaster Artist
The Tragedy of Macbeth
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Past Lives
The Zone of Interest
Warfare

It seems to me that as long as they aren't doing a horror or getting super weirdo, I like the stuff they produce.

I know what you are getting at. I think what happened is that Hereditary went so hard on it and it was so real that it is the example that people point to. I've seen movies like that and The Witch used as examples of "elevated horror" (along with torture porn, a term I truly despise), but not all of those have to do with family grief like this one does. I do think there is an overall trend in horror to base the horror on trauma, sociological, or psychological issues. The Babadook, Get Out, It Follows, and Smile all come to mind when I write that.

No, it's not that different. Truth be told, on paper I should really dislike Maverick. Flashbacks, rehashing plot points, a sequel, etc.. However, while it wasn't that different, IMO it vastly improved the original in a few ways:
  • more action and better looking action
  • an actual mission that is spelled out
  • an opening and closing act that was different (Top Gun is bookended by basically the same looking sequence)
  • a better cast of side characters, including much better girlfriend material. I love Hamm and Harris in this, I think the pilots are fun (love Bob), and Connelley>>>>> McGillis

I knew that one of Maverick or Rogue One would be in my top 10 as the fun pg-13 action franchise movie I wanted. I can admit that Maverick has it warts, but I have learned to embrace the because of the above. The original is a movie I like, but can admit it's not that great. I thought Maverick improved it in just about every way. I sat down in the theater basically with my arms crossed thinking there was no way this was going to be good. By the time the Won't Get Fooled Again montage was over, I was fully won over. On rewatches, I think Rogue One is better all the way through so that is why it was in the top 10 and Maverick was in the next tier of movies for me.

I have talked about Before Sunset a lot around here, so it was probably no surprise it showed up in my top 5. I love everything about this movie, and they did such a great job with the script and how and why Jesse and Celine are together for the movie. A couple brilliant things they did was get Hawke and Delpy more involved in the writing and their characters - I think they come off much more naturally here and both incorporate biographical details in the movie. The other thing is the ticking clock situation as they only have a limited time. The movie flows so well and has so many small human touches from outbursts to little looks or times they almost reach for each other. I love the whole trilogy, but it is this middle one that I have watched the most by far.

@Ilov80s' #3 movie is up next. Not sure if he has a clue for it or not, but I will post soon. Then our #2 movies will be later tonight.
Hmmm tough because I’m going to guess most people haven’t seen it. Krista loves it but she’s not checking out the thread. It’s a 2000 movie- the last the director made before his untimely death at 59. It’s a tough movie to describe. I guess if someone asked me what the movie was about, I would say, what is life about?

Very fair. It is at the top of my watch list as well.

#23: YI YI - 98PTS

#3 on 80s' list
I love this movie so much.

Why are we afraid of the first time? Every day in life is a first time. Every morning is new. We never live the same day twice.

My uncle says we live three times as long since man invented movies.
How can that be?
It means movies give us twice what we get from daily life.

Your list has given me a lot of ideas for my queue. The ones I highlighted for first watches were Yi Yi, The Brutalist, Aftersun, and The Handmaiden. One of my biggest takeaways from this adventure is that I need to watch more movies from around the world. I have been missing a ton of great movies.

Hints for the night's pair:

I wouldn't trick you, that is my favorite Nolan movie
No, that's not 80s' favorite position with the Mrs, that's his #2.
