The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (15 Viewers)

I think I'm as ignorant on newer shows as some other folks here are about classic ones.
I think I'm universally ignorant on new shows and old shows. I didn't really watch much TV programming until recently when my kids all grew up.

Speaking of kids, I have one left in the house, and he rarely watches TV. As in practically never. He's got a 4K TV in his room and every channel and most streaming services at his disposal and watches . . . nothing. He'll usually only watch things on YouTube, FB, or TikTok on his phone or laptop. But actual series or shows? Rarely. Once in a while something in the anime genre. Is the current generation not as into watching stuff as other generations? My other kids don't watch much TV either. They watch more movies than shows.

One of my best friends loves this show. He has impeccable taste in music and movies. As for TV, well, in his own words, "I have the same TV viewing habits as a 13-year-old girl."
Oh -- and to come full circle on the discussions of recent days, said friend was a child actor up until just before I met him when we were freshmen in high school. A year before I met him, he auditioned for the Cosby Show to play Vanessa's boyfriend. He was one of three finalists. The producers told him and his family that they would have to stay in/move to New York if he got the part (they lived in Philly). His mom said no and pulled him from consideration. He was extremely bitter about it and quit acting -- he didn't even do plays at our school. And he was about the only person in our school who didn't watch the Cosby Show.
Dumb story from my life. I grew up in LA. Had lots of friends succeeding at the acting thing. I’m talking kids here.

I’ve been through 3 auditions for a national 7/11 commercial. It’s down to me and some other 11 year old. I don’t get it. The reason they gave me was because I didn’t wear glasses. Even at 11, I was like that’s *********! I could’ve put on a pair of glasses!!, what a crock. The only commercial I was in was a French commercial for Orangina.
You were in a commercial? LINK?

I don't know what Orangina is but it sounds hot.
My mom told me about her friend who had a sister who went to school with a girl named Orangina. Here sister was named Lemongina.
and their dad was Mangina.

I don’t have a copy and it was 45 years ago. Damn I’m getting older! It was something like this add. But it was a pool scene and everyone was drawn to the drink like gravity. I had to get in and of pool a zillion times. I didn’t love it

this was really good, but I only watched the first season, so I couldn't rank it.

Never watched Watchmen or Broadchurch. The latter never interested me but I’ve been interested in watching the former. Does it stay strong throughout?

Newhart is obviously a classic for most people. I never made an effort to watch all of them but when I caught them, I was amused. Not enough to aggressively seek them out, though.

I had Watchmen ranked, so I thought it was great. better than the movie even. it was only one season, so it's a pretty easy watch. there was talk of a second season, but it's already been 6 years, so I'm not holding my breath.

They are programmed to have attention spans of about 4 seconds. One of my kids can actually sit still and watch a TV or movie, but my other teen can't be bothered.

I loved this show so much. A big reason why was because it was one of the first later night shows my parents would let me watch with them. So many great laughs and memories. I’m a little bummed it didn’t get ranked by more. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.

My oldest (16) watches a lot of shows on the computer, think he’s currently on Breaking Bad
11 and 13 year olds just play video games or watch YouTube, although they both did watch Cobra Kai

I'm pretty much 100% youtube, the amount of content created is staggering. No cable or netflix. Got Peacock for $25 for the year to watch sports and Prime by default. Strange times compared to "Must See" TV nights.

Some minor inside baseball on Watchmen, it was originally planned as 10 episodes but they cut it down to 9 to keep it strong throughout instead of padding the story to fill it up.

145 - Broadchurch

Top score. Thought it would rank quite a bit higher by appearing on more lists, but figured I'd have it highest. If you haven't seen it, it's a surprisingly intense ride for the beautiful setting. One of my considerations for ranking anything this high was would I or have I watched it more than once. My two top rated shows are the two I've rewatched the most.

I haven't rewatched Broadchurch. No need. An intricate deeply emotional and involved plot unfolds with David Tennant and Olivia Coleman giving what afaik is their best performances. That's saying something. It's the resolution of that plot that keeps you thinking and watching but once it resolves, as well done as it is, rewatching just can't provide its best feature: The emotional investment in the outcome. That may describe quite a few shows you've seen. It's just stronger here.

As some of you ranked shows because it worked for both you and your spouse. this was one of the first that worked for me and my daughter. Single dad, sole custody - we still talk about it some and laugh about how one of us getting ahead of the other was a very big problem. Good times. Good life lessons for the kid. Soundtrack as intense as the story. It led me down a continuing rabbit hole of British television shows, many on my list.

My 13-year-old is primarily YouTube/video games as well. He'll watch shows with us but only if he's got at least one of YouTube/video games also going.

When he was young, there were certain Disney Channel/Disney Junior shows that we watched just because of him, but now, he almost always says he doesn't care what we put on (as long as it's not Deal or No Deal Island) and doesn't want to pay much attention to it.

Do I get partial credit because I ranked the later one? Or negative credit because I chose the "wrong" one to rank?

No but that was awesome. 11 year old me would have been transfixed by her.

I wanted to mention two honorable mentions. The first was a fun watch that was close to making my list. It might not have, were it not for the excellent setting and actors (especially the lead actress):

Murder at the End of the World

The second could and maybe should have made my list, except that it's just one season and it may not be able to keep up the quality of S1 so really too soon to tell imo:

Deadloch

If either of these show up in the top 200 I wouldn't be shocked. And honestly the second should probably have been on my list. Too late to change it now!

Great show with brilliant acting all around.

I forget if it is the first or second episode of season 1, but when Midge gets drunk and heads to the club for the second time. The manager of the club assesses the situation quickly(seeing Midge drunk and wanting to talk), she runs over and pushes whatever comic off the stage and lets Midge do her thing. Great scene!

Seen both, would have loved to see additional seasons or more before adding them to my lists. Just had the 'one-off' kind of feel. I know there's talk of a second season of your second one, so reserving judgement on that as a whole until that's in.

never seen the first, never heard of the second. Both are prob too obscure. Maybe, idk
It was recommended here or on another board as an alternative to True Detective: Night Country. Sort of a what that show was trying to be. Although I don't think that's entirely on point, I enjoyed this show quite a bit more than that season of True Detective. And it has a lot more heart and dare I say levity.

eta: @Joe Schmo recommended it in the True Detective thread and our very own @Scoresman in the streaming thread.

Another show created by Amy Sherman-Palladino who made her name as the showrunner for Gilmore Girls.

I see I'm the high scorer for Mrs. Maisel. I obviously love this show, from the humor to the 1950's-1960's New York setting to the Jewish American culture. You're simultaneously laughing and genuinely wanting Miriam to succeed. And this may have had the best series finale episode in history - if pressed, I would rank only one above it and that's from a show that should be a lock for the Top Ten.
