76 - The Big Bang Theory

Hipsters hate it, in part because for the first part of its run it aired opposite Community and crushed it in the ratings. But BBT was the Friends of its era: a group of twenty- and thirtysomethings you grew to care about deeply thrust into situations that were usually hilarious. The producers quickly realized that Jim Parsons drove the show and put his Sheldon at the forefront of things, but also allowed him and the writers to develop the character so that it accomplished a rarity: Becoming LESS Flanderized over the course of the show's run. In the first two seasons, Sheldon is a parody of a neurodiverse nerd, but after that, he becomes much more nuanced and humanized, to the point where we grew to become emotionally invested in his friendships, romantic relationship and career -- even to the point where a spinoff about his childhood was eagerly anticipated and deservedly popular. And the guest stars the show pulled were every bit as astounding as those on Friends.

(sorry couldn't help myself)

BBT above Silicon Valley and 30 Rock is too bad. We need to do better with the next 75 picks, mmmkay?

For what it's worth I also really disliked Friends, except for a select few scenes/lines.

Up next, the first show that I feel is criminally under ranked, and one that needs to be on top of everyone's watchlist who hasnt seen it.

At the same time, I understand the low ranking because it is a pretty difficult show to watch and keep up with for various reasons.

Yeah, if you're not a fan of Friends, you're not going to be a fan of this either.

This is a good write up - also, and maybe this only applies to me but it was a great show to watch with my wife. We don’t agree on a lot of television and our sense of humors are fairly different but this was one we both enjoyed a lot.

Same here. In fact, I started watching this, about halfway through the first season, because she was watching it.

If anyone has never seen it and wants to check it out, I would suggest skipping the first season. It's vastly inferior to the others.

Huge fan of this show, obviously, and have watched the entire series several times. Gilfoyle vs. Danesh, Erlich vs. Jian-Yiang, Jared vs. himself (and Holden), Jian-Yiang vs. everyone, etc. Constant hilarity, even if each season follows the same, fairly predictable, format.
Don't forget Big Head falling *** backwards into success all the time.

Sketch comedy shows / variety shows did really well in my rankings - with In Living Color and SCTV already revealed and 5 or 6 left on my list to be revealed (hopefully). A couple others just missed the cut too.

Awesome! I was afraid this one was going to overlooked and slip through the cracks.

What a cast - Phil Hartman, Maura Tierney, Dave Foley, Andy ****, Joe Rogan . . .
And Stephen Root. The show doesn't work without him. The staff of the radio station is as chaotic as they are because of Jimmy James.

Playing a character that's the complete opposite of his Milton from Office Space, to boot.
And Root's character in Dodgeball as well.

I think Dark has 2 things going against it that make it less accessible

1. It's in German
2. You almost need a wiki companion guide to follow what's happening.

But if you can get over that, it's one of the best time travel stories put to TV. Great story, satisfying conclusion. If plotlines like" somebody's daughter is also their mother and at the same time their own grandmother" appeals to you, watch this.

2. You almost need a wiki companion guide to follow what's happening.

It's very high on my to-watch list, but it's this part that makes me hesitate every time I decide it's going to be next.

It's a little exaggerated honestly. There are times when I would go and confirm my understanding of something after an episode, but it's mostly smaller details.

Well the good thing is you have to pay attention to read the subtitles - unless you speak German. I can understand German a little but definitely needed subtitles so kept me from looking at my phone.

Sounds like two ingredients for an amazing show...

We obviously have very different consumption habits here. Kind of neat to see them meld.

I can translate 42% of the German language thanks to Dark. Definitely know when someone is tots.

I'm not sure what you mean here.

This show sounds interesting.

I'm currently watching The Crown. Is there some reason they didn't pay the power bill? Most of the indoor scenes are so dark, I can't tell WTF is going on. Please tell me Dark is not all that dark.

What I mean is: Im literally never watching stuff that's not in a language I speak. I can't stand subtitles. I'm not going to that level of effort, I find it more draining than entertaining. And dubs are even worse, they're distracting.

Then add the "the shows plotline is super confusing and difficult to follow" description...I have no idea why one would intentionally be psyched for that.

Obviously that stuff can be good - note how I didn't say something was better or worse for it - just look at how many people ranked it and where it landed on the list!

Which I think is kind of neat to see how that melds into a giant group list. And I wonder if that same set of very different consumption habits is gonna reveal some shows that I will want to watch but never encountered. Thus my choice of words.

Dark is phenomenal. One of only a handful of shows I'd ever reconsider watching over in it's entirety. Actually I can only think of two others. Certainly not for everyone though.
:goodposting:

There's so much I rarely rewatch anything, and when I do 99 times out of 100 it is a comedy.

What I mean is: Im literally never watching stuff that's not in a language I speak. I can't stand subtitles.
I am in this same boat. I won't say I will never watch something that is subtitled but it does take something away from the viewing experience for me. I feel I am too busy reading and miss non verbal stuff because I am reading instead of watching.

Other than the tone (it's dark, get it?), binging the show will alleviate this issue somewhat. I can't remember character names for any show, so having to wait for seasons to release was a problem. And it still made my list.

My opinion is that it is worth it, and you get used to it. In some genres like horror, i think most non-US movies do it better.

Another thing you find is you dont need to know every word. (Ok, maybe for Dark you might. ;) ) I'd bet most of us miss dialogue when we watch shows and movies in our language.

Needing outlines, flow charts, and a family tree to understand a show starts to sound like homework to me.
Worth it.

Also, you don’t “need it” if your phone is in the other room and you can read lol. It is a nice reference after an episode, especially for S3

I hate watching comedies at my mom's house because she always has the closed captioning on and any nuance in delivered punchlines is diluted by reading them 3 seconds beforehand. That said, I can handle subtitles in any other genre (and will tolerate them in foreign comedies that are highly recommended).

I found the family tree stuff harder to follow along with in Game of Thrones than in Dark.

Dark - I originally had much higher like 20s or 30s I think but then I bumped it down quite a bit
It’s good but a bit convoluted and the final season kind of lost me
I like smart TV but not something i need a damn flowchart for

There are drawbacks, i can agree. I have also had plots spoiled by CC as they post a character name.

We live by the interstate, so i have them on a lot when we have windows open.

OK, this is a helpful comparison for me. I did find GoT hard to follow sometimes in terms of that stuff, so I took to reading the episode summaries afterward, in case I missed anything. I also had OH who had read the books and watched the show already. I'll just take a similar approach to Dark (minus the OH part, since he hasn't seen it either).

I totally forgot about Dark; it would have made my list for sure. I thought they did a good job connecting things that I originally thought weren't connected at all. Yes, I had to go read an online debriefing after each episode to see what I missed, but I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed. I thought it was very ambitious, complicated, and I was completely into it. It should have been in my top 30.
