But BBT was the Friends of its era: a group of twenty- and thirtysomethings you grew to care about deeply thrust into situations that were usually hilarious. The producers quickly realized that Jim Parsons drove the show and put his Sheldon at the forefront of things, but also allowed him and the writers to develop the character so that it accomplished a rarity: Becoming LESS Flanderized over the course of the show's run. In the first two seasons, Sheldon is a parody of a neurodiverse nerd, but after that, he becomes much more nuanced and humanized, to the point where we grew to become emotionally invested in his friendships, romantic relationship and career -- even to the point where a spinoff about his childhood was eagerly anticipated and deservedly popular. This is a good write up - also, and maybe this only applies to me but it was a great show to watch with my wife. We don’t agree on a lot of television and our sense of humors are fairly different but this was one we both enjoyed a lot.

This is a good write up - also, and maybe this only applies to me but it was a great show to watch with my wife. We don’t agree on a lot of television and our sense of humors are fairly different but this was one we both enjoyed a lot.
If anyone has never seen it and wants to check it out, I would suggest skipping the first season. It's vastly inferior to the others.

Thought about including it but I think I had an aversion to putting sketch comedy shows on the list for some reason. For unknown reasons I just didn't consider them for a list like this.

Huge fan of this show, obviously, and have watched the entire series several times. Gilfoyle vs. Danesh, Erlich vs. Jian-Yiang, Jared vs. himself (and Holden), Jian-Yiang vs. everyone, etc. Constant hilarity, even if each season follows the same, fairly predictable, format.

I think Dark has 2 things going against it that make it less accessible
1. It's in German
2. You almost need a wiki companion guide to follow what's happening.
But if you can get over that, it's one of the best time travel stories put to TV. Great story, satisfying conclusion. If plotlines like" somebody's daughter is also their mother and at the same time their own grandmother" appeals to you, watch this.

I'm currently watching The Crown. Is there some reason they didn't pay the power bill? Most of the indoor scenes are so dark, I can't tell WTF is going on. Please tell me Dark is not all that dark.

What I mean is: Im literally never watching stuff that's not in a language I speak. I can't stand subtitles. I'm not going to that level of effort, I find it more draining than entertaining. And dubs are even worse, they're distracting.
Then add the "the shows plotline is super confusing and difficult to follow" description...I have no idea why one would intentionally be psyched for that.
Obviously that stuff can be good - note how I didn't say something was better or worse for it - just look at how many people ranked it and where it landed on the list!
Which I think is kind of neat to see how that melds into a giant group list. And I wonder if that same set of very different consumption habits is gonna reveal some shows that I will want to watch but never encountered. Thus my choice of words.

Needing outlines, flow charts, and a family tree to understand a show starts to sound like homework to me.
I am in this same boat. I won't say I will never watch something that is subtitled but it does take something away from the viewing experience for me. I feel I am too busy reading and miss non verbal stuff because I am reading instead of watching.

Other than the tone (it's dark, get it?), binging the show will alleviate this issue somewhat. I can't remember character names for any show, so having to wait for seasons to release was a problem. And it still made my list.

My opinion is that it is worth it, and you get used to it. In some genres like horror, i think most non-US movies do it better.
Another thing you find is you dont need to know every word. (Ok, maybe for Dark you might.
) I'd bet most of us miss dialogue when we watch shows and movies in our language.

Dark - I originally had much higher like 20s or 30s I think but then I bumped it down quite a bit

We live by the interstate, so i have them on a lot when we have windows open.

I love subtitles - really enjoyed "Taboo" and "Peaky Blinders" with them - otherwise I would have missed at least half of it

OK, this is a helpful comparison for me. I did find GoT hard to follow sometimes in terms of that stuff, so I took to reading the episode summaries afterward, in case I missed anything. I also had OH who had read the books and watched the show already. I'll just take a similar approach to Dark (minus the OH part, since he hasn't seen it either).

I totally forgot about Dark; it would have made my list for sure. I thought they did a good job connecting things that I originally thought weren't connected at all. Yes, I had to go read an online debriefing after each episode to see what I missed, but I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed. I thought it was very ambitious, complicated, and I was completely into it. It should have been in my top 30.
