The Top 300 Greatest TV Shows of All Time: FBG Consensus: 50 Lists received. 2: Seinfeld 1: Breaking Bad (5 Viewers)

I heard "Reflections" today by the Supremes, and was reminded that it was the theme song for China Beach. Anyone vote for, or remember that show? I remember there being buzz around this one back then, but it's one my parents watched, not me.

Don’t remember much about the show but remember having a crush on Dana Delaney.
There was a movie in the early '90s called Exit to Eden. It was horrible. But there is one reason to watch (at least part of) it: Dana Delaney nude scene.

Okay, dude, you’re the bees’ knees. But I just did a double take. I actually thought this, no cap no ********, “Dana Delaney?! You mean the woman from China Beach? The best thing about that show was realizing I liked The Rolling Stones. I guess Pip was going through puberty or something. Damn that was a good theme song! What a ****ty show.”

The only thing I might be lying about is that I think I thought of the word “chick” and not “woman” because I probably was calling her that back then. Lol.

Just a small update from me but I watched the first 2 episodes of Letterkenny and I wonder when it will get good. I also watched the first 2 episodes of Moonlighting. I like Bruce Willis a lot and my main gripe with the pilot is that I felt like the pacing was really slow. It took 40 minutes for them to get into the plot. The ending of the second episode was sorta lol. Lonesome Dove was not at all what I was expecting. I had assumed the name might imply it took place in the town of Lonesome Dove but it's a cattle drive. ok then! Didn't really care for the first episode but the 2nd was better. Still not wowed with it though but I will be finishing it.

Finished Lonesome Dove today. It was ok but I didn't really think it was that good. I like Tommy Lee Jones and I felt like he did well. Things like Yellowstone and 1883 seem so much better than this.

Me either. I guess it’s on MAX though, which would explain that.
Wife and I are currently watching The Leftovers, almost done with season 2. She keeps saying how confused she is. This is out there but has been good so far.

I get that. The jump back and forth between timelines can get confusing but it's easier to follow because you get used to it. I just watched the series for the first time a couple months ago. I thought it was good but not great. Entertaining enough.

"Not on streaming" is not the same thing as "Not available on a subscription streaming service". There was a time, not so long ago, that we all paid a rental fee to watch our programming.

Almost everything is still rentable/purchasable in digital form. Here's Mr Robot for $25. There are 45 episodes so that works out to $.56/episode. Shoot the locks off your wallets.

And physical media is still available. And also has the advantage of being something you can sell once you're done with it. Here's Mr Robot for $45.

End
Sorry, I am trying save money and decrease my subscriptions as well. I am not cold purchasing shows I've never seen for $25-45. Yes, I get that I can buy and rent most things on Amazon or buy the discs. I can also wait in line at the library for the 1 copy of the show my library service has.

Most of my post was playful poking, but certainly you can understand the frustration of having multiple streaming services and STILL having to rent/buy or get from the library a surprisingly big portion of stuff people want to watch. It's a pretty known show, so I was mildly surprised one of them doesn't own it and have it on their service. Shows like Faulty Towers I expect to have more issues finding.
I'm kinda teasing too, but also a bit serious.

Paying for a monthly streaming service is just another way of renting. Sure it's an "all I can watch" version of it, but you still don't own anything once your month is done. The advantage is that you can watch an episode or two of a show and bail if you don't like it. But it's still sunk cost and you paid something for it in both dollars and time. Things still break down to a "cost per watch" amount.

I would advocate checking out the show from the library (if only libraries had more Blu-Rays! :sadbanana: ) if only just to check something out. Unfortunately libraries will eventually/soon run into a lot of their movies falling victim to disc rot.

To your point, is it surprising that Mr. Robot isn't available to stream anywhere? Yes it is. It was at one time, I know, because I watched it on Hulu. The licensing for all this stuff must be a weird thing. But not every buffet is going to have every menu item available at all times, I guess.

TLDR - Mr. Robot is worth watching no matter how you need to get to it.
On Netflix now.

It gets really weird. It was interesting for a couple seasons (I think I got into season 3) and have gone away from it. I might go back at some point. Just something about it turned me off of it after a few seasons.

House is ok, a fun watch, but is every episode EXACTLY the same?
Don't binge it. Spacing helps.

Yeah definitely more of a once or twice a week type show

It’s basically a procedural but with some good character development of the main cast

Person comes in with Symptom

It’s lupus

Treatment for lupus doesn’t work

Cast fights / argues

House has a revelation and realizes it’s (obscure disease or something super common they overlooked)

I watched the first 2 episodes of Letterkenny and I wonder when it will get good
You may as well move on (I'm sure you have already). Not much in between on this show. You either love it or hate it.

I watched two episodes and bailed - maybe I'm not familiar with hockey or Midwest culture because I did not get what was supposed to be funny.
Give yer balls a tug

Or watch this clip

That’s kind of clever but didn’t laugh.

The ones I watched were mostly the main guys sitting by a truck. I couldn’t find a laugh in two episodes.

Obviously many people like it so can’t say it’s bad, but it’s not for me.

It’s never lupus.

I had the same experience, watched a couple of episodes, didnt laugh. Just not my thing I guess.

Add me to the list of those that don't quite get it.

I am almost through The Shield. It would definitely be in my top 70 and probably be around 20-ish. Very entertaining. I am in the last season and want to see how it finishes up.

Great show - I was also late to it from when it first aired, but was worth the wait.

Canadian humor is definitely not for everyone

I think some of writing and delivery is absolutely incredible though

A collective critics list as a comparison. Definitely seems to have more recency bias than ours.

They only have 6 shows out of 50 (Sopranos, Seinfeld, Friends, Twighlight Zone, Twin Peaks and Freaks and Geeks) that were premiered in the 20th century. No Cheers, Miami Vice, All in the Family, Mary Tyler Moore, SNL, Simpsons, etc. Heck of those shows that premiered before 2000, half of them actually had most of their run in the 2000s.

User name checks out for this comment (and I agree wholeheartedly)

Yeah I loved it. Avoid spoilers. I thought they did a very good job ending the show.

ETA I think it would be in my top 10 on a re do.

Not surprising. TV has gotten way better in general over the years.
More plentiful for sure, so there are going to be more opportunities to hit on some top notch shows. Better is arguable.

Definitely more plentiful, which will bring bad with it, but I think the best shows of today are better than the best shows of 30 years ago.
