Thicker Skin - Empathy - Love Wins (1 Viewer)

Hey Guys.

This one got me.

I post it here mostly because it's a cool story. But also with the hope we can consider this type of thing for our boards.

Whether you like Sarah Silverman or not, she acted like a rock star here.

The cliff notes version is some guy on Twitter attacked her calling her the C word. https://www.boredpanda.com/comedian-twitter-response-sarah-silverman/

Instead of blasting him back or blocking him, she engaged.

You can read the exchanges back and forth which are pretty incredible.

My thought:

What Silverman did here was extraordinary. Most people never do what she did.

But the guy attacking her isn't extraordinary. I think it's common.

Sure, there are a percentage of people who're just mean or evil. Period. But I think the number is small. I think the vast majority of people you encounter coming off as intensely negative or aggressive are reacting to some sort of awfulness in their own life. Maybe it's self-inflicted. And it's likely tangled and complicated. But that doesn't change the reality their action is way more about them than it is you.

So be like Silverman here. When someone comes at you, give it two beats of thought before jabbing back. In words I often use, "give a damn" about that other person and act in a way that matches. Show a little thicker skin, put your precious self-image on hold for a second and see if there's more to the other person. Or a reason behind their actions.

Bottom line is Love Wins.
