THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (11 Viewers)

Yeah, but there really has not been much discussion of the last 4-5 picks that I remember, just talking about Mahomes and who he passed a TD too.

What were your thoughts on the last 4-8 picks?  I might have missed them in all the football chat.

alias of a name that you most likely wouldn’t recognize anyway (except maybe from the bottom of one of the other drafts).

I’ve never done nearly as much posting as reading.
Oh...you picked some prime reading tonight.

sure.

it's a Caddyshack clip where Rodney Dangerfield is quoted as saying "Now I know why tiger's eat their young"

I hope everyone enjoys it.
Ok...try again. But this time, please try to suck every last ounce of joy out of that

I'm not sure [The Smiths] were that important in Houston.  I don't think I ever heard them or Morrisey on the radio at all.

Some of these artists are definitely regional.  Blue collar northeast definitely has a Springsteen boner more than the rest of the entire country.  Good for them and their myopic understanding of popular music.

thanks I was really going for the whole laconic thing with that ...

so glad it appears my improv writing workshops are working out!!!  yeah me!!!

True. Eephus's pick didn't get too many comments. As for me personally, I try to refrain from criticizing any pick, so my silence might be that. I'm a relativist a bit when it comes to these drafts. I've found the tone and tenor of the participants is better if, when I have something negative to say, I keep it to myself.

Well, the best song from any artist is pretty much a matter of opinion so who is to say that they are wrong?

I didn't necessarily agree with the choice of LIttle Queenie for Chuck Berry, but I wouldn't said that it or almost any of his other hits were the "wrong" pick (although I would have drawn a line if the choice had been My Ding-A-Ling  ).

I haven't criticized any picks outside of saying that it would not have been my choice and then listed a song that I liked better. If it is any artist I am not familiar with, I have made no comment.

Yeah, I wasn't implying you had done that. I also have tried to just list alternative songs I might have chosen. Things like "wrong" or passing off opinion as objective fact doesn't really happen all that often, unless you're El Floppo, but he's always...

WRONG.

I don't recall seeing them listed, but maybe I missed them due to the dozen or so notifications I was responding to from people attacking me for stating some factual information about The Smiths popularity in this county.  :hophead:

@rockaction

Please to explain.

You're intentionally saying that Strunk & White sounds like the name of a trap music act from 2012? That's what I got out of it. I would have gone with a British grime act if I heard that name. Maybe that's Binky's confusion.

For reference, I've included this

Crunk & White would be my former alter ego, btw.

Exactly so.

Grime was perfect for this. Perfect. Dammit  with the crunk and white cherry on top.

:lmao:   Notifications?  Why would you guys have these on?  I get notifications for one thing, which is if someone @s me, because that could happen in a thread I don't read.  I can't imagine sifting through notifications of people quoting me.  I just read the threads I've posted in, post by post.  Is that so hard?

Also, E.B. White is just a magnificent author and writer. The Trumpet of the Swan was one of my favorite childhood books.
Whoa. @Eephus

When our mutual friend and I were tweens in school together, for some reason "E.B. White" was the battle cry for inflicting charlie horses on the other. I have no memory of why or how that came about, but one would up to the other, yell E.B White, and then whammo. Often a volley of both.

4.xx My Morning Jacket - Circuital

These guys absolutely kill it live, I highly recommend.
Another artist I had hoped to take at some point.  Huge fan, especially of their first 4 albums.  And agree on their live prowess---one of their shows is still my favorite show I've ever seen.

I would've taken either The Way That He Sings, Mahgeetah or Gideon.
Ive playlisted them randomly through Spotify algorithms throwing songs at me and usually liked what I hear...but I've never dived in. Which album should I start with?

An honest response: I'm in a ton of threads throughout the day. It helps to know who is quoting you and what thread it's in. I probably would have a tough time without notifications. I'm in the Shark Pool, the PSF, and the FFA. It helps me tremendously. I generally believe in giving some form of response, too, for the most part, especially with newer members or members I don't interact with often.

 Maybe because White's little style manual was a bit exacting, especially for younger students?

Hmmmm, OK.

Depends on which songs you've enjoyed.  Their first 3 albums are much more guitar heavy, alt-country rock.  Starting with Z they branched out a bit stylistically, for the most part, to great effect.

My 2 favorites are It Still Moves and Z, with At Dawn a close 3rd.

I haven't loved any of their albums starting with Evil Urges but still see them whenever they play a show near me.

I'm sure I've posted this in some previous draft but this is the best late night musical guest performance I've seen. And it was their first television performance ever.

This was the iteration of the band and the tour I saw for that great show I mentioned.

Strangely, the first time I saw them in concert they were opening for Doves.  I'd never heard of MMJ.  It was an odd pairing but still a great show.

Love the riff in this. Like how it ascends.

For Uruk:

The Temptations - I Wish It Would Rain

@Steve TaskerUP
For all of the phases and lineup changes they had during the years 1964-1974 , the Temptations were remarkably consistent as hitmakers. Seems like they ALWAYS had at least one record on the charts and they were all really freaking good. I probably love more singles by them than any other artist.

Motown usually paired performers with one main producing/writing team  - HDH with the Supremes & the Tops, etc.... - and the Temptations best early records were Smokey sessions and songs. Moving into the second half of the 60s, Norman Whitfield was handed a few of the keys and he turned to a formula that brought David Ruffin forward in a series of records that emphasized lost love and suffering. Some were hard-charging up-tempo numbers like the fantastic "(I Know I'm) Losing You" and some were ballads like this record.

There have been many great singers chosen already in this draft and there are many more that will be chosen. But, for my money, David Ruffin's performance here ranks with anything ever put on wax. He went solo shortly afterwards and never really got going.

Others considered:

"My Girl". I hope this gets overplayed for the next million years, because it deserves every spin. If you don't smile when this plays, you have no heart.

"......Losing You".  There were at least two pretty great covers (Rare Earth & Faces), but I'm going with the original because great horn lines beat guitars.

"I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" (w/Supremes). Eddie Kendricks is the greatest falsetto singer in rock history (I think he was actually called a high tenor since he had no natural lower register, but go with me on this). He slays on this duet with Diana Ross.

"I Can't Get Next To You". All 5 Tempts sing lead on this one, with Dennis Edwards (Ruffin's replacement) being the 1A. Sly Stone's influence is all over this one and most of their other hits of the period.

"Just My Imagination". One last showcase for Kendricks before he, too, went solo. The Stones cover is an abomination - fight me.

"Papa Was A Rolling Stone". That deeper-than-deep bass and Miles-influenced trumpet make this a great record before the singing even starts. But, the singing! All 5 take turns, Edwards being the star again (Kendricks clone Damon Harris being a close runner-up).

Yes, they have, they say that actual sales figures or what those who charted radio stations for what songs were actually being played were saying doesn't count - and that I am wrong but have nothing to dispute it with but anecdotal stories of what they and their friends were listening to at the time.
Please stop.

hey ...where the #### is @Chaos Commish???  he's been up!!
He was at Staples Center for both NBA games yesterday. It's the coolest thing that only happens a couple times a season. Watched football at my buddy's between games. Annnd, left my phone at home. Oops, I left in such a hurry by the time I noticed I was without my phone, turning back would have cost me the first half of the Laker game instead of half of the 1st quarter. At least it seems my pick made it to the overnight break. But my bad. I do hate making people wait for me. It's almost an obsession in real life. Love being punctual and punctual people. I think the energy drinks required to drive home after 1am are making me ramble. Ask me anything. What's my pick? Good question.

Scrolling the sheet first, just in case.

Can't wait to read the 12 pages I missed today.

So, the three or four I think could be sniped survived. Now how to order them? I guess back to TripHop. There will be more. I'm not a huge fan of Beth Gibbons' variety of voices. A popular one is her evil gravelly mean voice. Another is a big over-powering "pop" voice. At least a lot of pop singers sing like that. Both are featured on perhaps their most popular track, Glory Hole, which I guess would be considered chalk here. There's a bunch of competition for best song though.

For me, seeking chill sultry downbeat ambient bla bla bla, it's the first song they ever recorded. Another one of Beth's voices, the one I really really like, seems to channel Sade and could be described as modern torch singing. My pick and maybe the best example is:

4.27 Portishead - It Could be Sweet

Now I get to read what all happened here today. Insomnia isn't always a bad thing, but feel free to skip me for round 5. Pretty sure I will sleeping if this moves fast.
