Thomas Jones to return earlier than expected? (1 Viewer)

You judge football players by their FF stats and you think you understand the game.
Since you're calling other people out for their football sense, you should know that RBs have much more of an impact in fantasy football than in real football.More often than not, games are won in the trenches and on special teams. RBs are important, but not as important as we FBGs make them out to be.So Jones or Thomas, no matter. These two guys aren't the difference makers for the Bears - the defense and special teams have been.

Really? So you don't think the ability to run the ball effectively and consistently is an extremely important factor in the real game for teams to be regularly successful? I'd like to see you back that argument up.

Exhibit A: Miami Dolphins with Ricky Williams and without himExhibit B: Elway SB rings without stud RB vs. rings with TDavisEtc., etc.

Of course it is, which often comes down to the offensive line - that is, the trenches. If the line is creating holes, then the running game should be successful, whether Jones or Thomas is running the ball. The talent gap is pretty even between the two so that both can take advantage. So again, I think the team's success/failure is less dependent on Jones or Thomas as opposed to extraneous factors.

Overall the two are probably equally as talented, but they have different strengths. As stated earlier, Jones is a better fit for what Chicago wants/needs at the RB position in their present system

This is a true statement. Nobody would argue that Krenzel is better than Grossman because the Bears won three games with him at QB.

Five pages is a lot to read...As of Thursday, do we know who is starting or what the projected load with be in Chicago in reference to Anthony Thomas and Thomas jones.

flaVVed - no one could make Jonathan Quinn look good.

Let Jones play with Krenzel and then make the correlation
Are you making the argument that Krenzel is better than Grossman? I'd love to get involved with that argument.Jones was still 1-2 with Grossman as a QB, while Thomas is 3-0 with Krenzel as a starter.

Just the facts.
PonyBoy, if you want to try to gain a foothold for your pathetic ATrain love with that tortured 1-2 vs. 3-0 logic, then you're the one that needs to be ready to support an argument that Krenzel is better than Grossman. After all if the team is winning, then Krenzel must be better, right? That's the logic you're applying to the RBs. So you better be ready to apply it to the QBs too. Heck, if anything, it would be much more applicable to QBs than RBs.

So by your own reasoning, you are involved with that argument, and necessarily on the Krenzel side.

Good luck with that.

Not definitively, but at this point all signs are pointing to Jones. After practice Lovie Smith sounded pretty optimistic about Jones, and he has said all along that once he's ready, Jones will be the starter.

Fixed.

If the line is creating holes, then the running game should be successful, whether Jones or Thomas is running the ball. The talent gap is pretty even large between the two so that both can take advantage. Jones is likely to make more given the same holes.

I won't argue with your changes ;)

Jones is clearly the better back, and the offense is geared around him...if you don't agree with just about everyone else here, how about the Bears Offensive coordinator?

"I can't say enough about the performance level that Anthony Thomas gave us in crunch situations,'' Shea said. "[but] Thomas Jones gives us a little bit more wiggle, and Thomas is a very smart player as well.''
Riddle me this, Batman:If the Bears' O-coordinator is so great that a few people have quoted him for his judgment, then how come the Bears' O is ranked dead last in the NFL?
I suppose the QB and WR positions have nothing to do with it?
Ohhh, I knew someone would throw that excuse out there.Okay, DEN is using its 5th string RB & is 5th in the NFL in total offense, but the Bears are #32 in total offense because they have lost 1 QB? Weak.

As far as WR, that just supports my case that Shea's judgment is questionable. Otherwise, how can you excuse starting a turd like David Terrell but letting a potential very solid WR like Bernard berrian languish on the bench most of the season so far? Unfathomable.

Jones will start because he is the coaches' darling, and the Bears will go back to their losing ways. Facts don't lie. Bears with Jones starting: 1-5. Bears with Thomas starting: 3-0.
T Jones is twice the RB that Thomas is or ever will be. He showed me this year that he is finally living up to his draft status and was about to have a blow up year before Grossman went down. I was never big on him in the past but watching him in a few games this year the kid seems like a totally different back than ever before and seems as tough as nails all of a sudden. Add in his high talent level, great speed and good hands, RB friendly offense and you have a great FF RB. Don't miss out on him next year because he is going to be a difference maker and if you're in a dynasty league go get him now and reap the benefits for the next 4-5 years.

Facts don't lie. Bears with Jones starting: 1-5. Bears with Thomas starting: 3-0.
Misinterpreted facts, and tortured logic make for some of the very best lies.
Please explain. This looks like a direct correlation to me. Jones had 3 games with the Bears' best QB, and 3 games with the worst QB, and the Bears' record in those games was 1-5. Did I state anything that was false here? Did I twist or convolute any facts?Thomas has had 3 starts with the Bears' tweener QB (who has hardly been effective by NFL standards), and the Bears have won all 3 of those games. Did I state anything that was false here? Did I twist or convolute any facts?

Just because you Jones lovers don't want to face the truth doesn't mean that the truth doesn't exist. Going into this season, both RB's stats lead clearly to the conclusion that Thomas is the better RB of the two. Now that is being perpetuated as the RBs get a chance to perform with the same teammates, and the Bears are undeniably more successful when Thomas is the starting RB.

One day some of you will learn something intricate about football. The QB who throws for 400+ yds isn't always the best QB on the field - in fact they lose regularly. The RB who can look flashy while he puts up a big gainer isn't necessarily the best RB for the team if he can't regularly move the chains or make the other team respect the run like the RB who plows ahead for 4 ypc with consistency. The WR who catches the long TD may not help the team be more successful than the guy who averages 8 ypc but catches everything thrown to him, saves the QB from INTs on bad throws, and is reliable in 3rd down & 4th down situations.

You judge football players by their FF stats and you think you understand the game.

LOL.
Unfortunately I don't have time to get involved in a full on pissing contest. My point is simply this -- when you say, "Facts don't lie. Bears with Jones starting: 1-5. Bears with Thomas starting: 3-0." you seem to contend that there is a direct cause and effect at play when, in fact, that may not be the case at all.One could just as easily make an arguement that the bears are winning despite the contribution of A-Train. In his last game Thomas posted 79 yards on 29 carries for an average of ~2.7 ypc. He accounted for 2 first downs, and ran for negative yards several times putting his team in 3rd and long situations. He was also called for a pair of costly penalties -- and all of this against a mediocre run defense. Is Thomas Jones responsible for the Bears victory over the Titans? I think the facts in this instance, when properly interpreted, actually demonstrate that the answer is a resounding NO.

I'm not making any blanket statements about the strenghths and weaknesses of one back over the other, but from what I've actually seen of the two, Jones is the RB who left me with the far more favorable impression. He just looked like he had "it" -- that certain something that could make him a special player. I've never gotton that impression from A-Train.

Sometimes facts DO lie.

The Bears are going to get down early this week, so Jones won't be all that play-worthy, anyway. If you have another option, take it.
What do you mean playworthy? The Bears will be running and using short passes to their RB's to try and keep the ball away from Manning & Co. Even down 5 TD's, DD still had a nice game last week, Ontario performed well in split duty as well.I think if Jones can play, he's extremely playworthy.
Seriously. That is one of the worst defenses in the league. You bet I play him if he's healthy...
No doubt.Even down by a handful of points, the pass to Jones will be used a lot - and the deep pass getting closed out by TJones in close will be the comeback strategy.
Well, obviously, judging from Jones' lofty ranking in this week's cheatsheets, I am the only guy who doesn't see you guys' "logic" regarding Thomas Jones.

I imagine that Jones' low ranking relates to the fact that we don't even know if he's playing yet, much less whether he'll split time with A-Train.Nice try though...

To avoid looking through the whole thread, ill just ask. Whats the word for this weekend with Thomas Jones? Im pretty sure hes playing but want to make sure, and is he supposed to be getting as many carries as he was(as far as you know)?

from cbs sportsline..

Thomas Jones, RB CHINews: The Chicago Sun-Times reports Jones (foot) practiced on Wednesday and expects to play in Week 11. "I did pretty much everything," Jones said. "We still have two more days of practice left, but I definitely feel better than last week. It's still a little bit sore." Analysis: Jones will re-emerge as the starter, but there's also a good chance he'll split some carries with Anthony Thomas.
I say Jones gets most of the carries and Thomas becomes an afterthought.Full disclosure- I own TJ in one league.

Much better than your try, for sure.If you will bother read my original post, you'll see that those were both criteria for my own opinion that Jones is a less than stellar play this week.

Per KFFL, Lovie said that both guys will play, but no indication as to how much the load will be split. I imagine that will come down to how Jones' toe is, and how well he's running.

:wall:
Bears | Both Thomas and Jones to Get CarriesThu, 18 Nov 2004 21:30:18 -0800--------------------------------------------------------------------------------According to Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, both RBs Thomas Jones (toe) and Anthony Thomas are expected to carry the ball Sunday, Nov. 21, against the Indianapolis Colts, reports Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com. "Both guys figure to play no matter what," Smith said. "Anthony Thomas has played well and has proven that he deserves some reps. We feel like we have two tailbacks that we can use this week." Jones remains probable with a toe injury and might not start the game.

As a football fan that lives near Chicago, never missing a Bears game (not by choice..local coverage) and has both Jones and Thomas on my team, I don't believe Thomas is near as good as Jones in this system or any other for that matter. Thomas filled in nicely while Jones sat out (he won the week for my team against the Giants) but I can't wait to get Jones back in the lineup. Completely different skills...Jones is so much better that I can't believe anyone would think otherwise. Not even close.

Neal, since you're close to Chicago, what are you hearing about the split of carries between Jones and Thomas for this Sunday?I also own both on one team and I need to make sure I start the right one. Thanks in advance for any info.

Is there anyone close to Thomas Jones this year as to the amount of discussion generated? Carry on.

The one thing that would concern me with regard to Jones' carries is that the Bears are playing again on Thanksgiving, just four days away.Lovie may not want to overwork TJ with his injury, given that they're going to need him on a short week.

:goodposting: thats a good point, i may have to think twice about starting him this week....need some new of how many carries he's expected to get :wall:

Obviously, he didn't wind up being a great start against Indy. However, I'm more apt to think he might put up some numbers against Dallas on Thanksgiving Day. In fact, I'm considering starting him over Dillon and Bettis. Considering. So ... are all the Jones fanboys still on the wagon after he let you down in Indy? Do you think Jones will fare better against Dallas and warrant a fantasy start?

i have to start jones this week. i would go bettis but i cant rely on staley's health nor brown playing. jones is the guy this week.

For some reason, I have a feeling that Jones is going to be another 55 yards rushing, 22 yards receiving type guy with no TDs this week. That won't do for me.

Sweet, so this guy  had a premonition - thank god I read this before Thursday, I was actually planning to start Jones!!!I don't know about you guys, but I generally try to ignore any fantasy advice that begins with "For some reason, I have a feeling that..."
