Tiger Woods (3 Viewers)

Damn. Totally sucks.

Also, weird seeing dudes in here rooting for him to get hurt or the like. I hope he has a lot of years of golf left in him, and gives us some more thrills like he used to.
At least you, AAABatteries and a few others won't have to spend your time boring yourselves by watching the Masters this year.

I like rooting for him to get hurt because he's a POS. Nothing to do with his golf ability. I was actually a big fan of his before everything came out about him.

All the talk 10+yrs ago about his back truncating his career because of his aggressive swing seem to be coming true.

I still root for Tiger even though there are other golfers I like better. I just think all the talk of him as the greatest golfer of all time was a bit premature.

Might make the crowd at the Players a little less of a zoo. Ah, who am I kidding? It's not like they lost their liquor license.

Maybe it's not his back; maybe it's ball cancer from being hugged too much by some of those on this thread.

Damn, his body is just falling apart. Crazy all the injuries that he's had while a guy like Phil hasn't had much at all. Only thing I can remember is bad arthritis. Blows that he's not going to be at Augustus. That's the one major where he's typically in the hunt.

Would be interesting to see what would happen if he slimmed down. He's been dicking around with his swing due to all the injuries he's developed perhaps in part to his quest for strength. Maybe he needs to be more intent on flexibility.

His ego may not let him.
And the PEDs, don't forget the PEDs.

Rumors are that Tiger is dumping Foley, it will be interesting to see who he goes to next.

Whether you root for or against him, whether you are a serious or casual fan, it sucks that Tiger is going to be out for a while. Tiger is great for the game.

Don't understand how anyone could disagree with this.

Tiger is so polarizing and that is great for the game whether people are searching for him on the leaderboard hoping he's near the top or about to miss the cut. Either way, everyone seems to want to know where he is on Friday afternoon. His dominant days are certainly over, but the weekends are more enjoyable, IMO, when he is in contention.

Hate he is missing the Masters. As NutterButter said above, that is the one tournament he always seems to be in contention. He may not be ready for the next few majors either.

He won five times last year. In golf, that qualifies as dominant. Only two players not named Woods have won 5 or more in the last 33 years. So a bit premature to say his dominant days are certainly over.

#2 does not set up well for him, fwiw. Seems like everybody and their grandmother has been down there to play recently, or in one friend's case is on the course right now, and everybody is talking about how penalizing errant shots are, especially tee shots, due to the reintroduction of natural areas and the amount of native grasses they put in them. There are going to be some big numbers made by people losing balls in there or making ill-advised attempts at advancing it rather than taking unplayables. And then there will be those hitting 3-wood in order to take those out of play, who will subsequently be hitting longer irons or even woods into turtle shell greens that can barely hold mid-irons. Sounds like it's going to play tough.

Are you referring to Pinehurst?

Yes. He hits it high so that's good, but if he struggles at all off the tee, as obviously happens quite a bit, heis not going to be able to scramble his way to scoring. Nor will anybody else.

I enjoy watching anyone playing dominant golf, especially on Sundays. Only thing I hate is a bunched-up leaderboard and everyone hitting bogeys like they're afraid to win it. There have been numerous examples of guys coming out of nowhere and just being in the zone on Sunday, and that to me is thrilling. You never know who that guy is going to be.

I was in awe of Tiger as much as anyone, but I'm as excited as ever for this year's Masters. I can't imagine ever not being pumped for the Masters or any major. The game will go on without him someday.

oh yes of course. I watch all majors (and as much of other tournaments when I can) whether he's there or not. Can't wait for the Masters, always my favorite venue. I pull for Phil, Bubba, and I like Snedeker, Kuch, and Dufner. I'm even warming up to Keegan Bradley.

Dude you are so out of touch.

2014 is the longest stretch to begin a season in which a top 5 player hasn't won since they instituted the OWGR 28 years ago.

Golf made a huge mistake during the height of Tiger by only focusing on him. I get why they did it. But they should have been trying to hype other players as well. There have been many other exciting golfers out there. Not as dominating, but definitely fun to watch. Yet all of the focus was on Tiger. All of their eggs in one basket. And when Tiger is done, and no one goes back to watching golf, they can only blame themselves.

Tiger commanded that attention by setting the bar so high and no one could take that attention away. All of the other golf greats had others step up to try and take the throne but in Tigers case only Tiger could beat Tiger. Other players are unbelievably talented just no where near the level of Eldrick The new breed coming up has Tiger to thank for everything that he brought to the game to show what level the game can be played. The guy is a once-in-a-lifetime talent, golf had to market that.

Over/under on how many times he is mentioned during the main broadcast?
Pretty sure that ESPN or CBS will take Tiger's last Masters scorecard and put it up hole by hole against the leaderboard on the weekend
Maybe they can photoshop a video game version of Tiger into the broadcast.

Jim Nance in hushed tones: "This is what Tiger would look like if he was able to play today"

I get that. And of course they did. But they should have used the attention they were getting from Tiger to try and market the game and it's other players. Instead they focused solely on Tiger and maybe the one person he was going against that month in the number 2 spot.

I'm not saying they shouldn't have marketed him. What I'm saying is they should have used all of the attention that he was bringing to the game as a way to advertise their sport for the future. It's not like they didn't know that Tiger wouldn't be around someday. It comes off as extremely shortsighted.

Who is they? The networks, the tour, the USGA, the R&A? What should they have done? Golf is popular like never before and will most likely remain that way because of how Tiger changed the game. I get that when he is out of contention and still showing him hole out on 18 is annoying and does a disservice to the rest of the field but in his hey day, he was usually in the mix.

Hard not to hype a player who's dominating everyone else.

Again. Not my point in the slightest.
