While I would agree that sports in general get more competitive over time, winning 18 majors over 25 years, from age 22 to 46, is difficult in any era. Obviously, since no one else has done it.

There were plenty of worthy adversaries in Jack's day: Arnie, Player, Trevino, Watson.

Tiger himself always touted that majors were all that mattered. And even though most observers thought he would surpass Jack, the fact he hasn't (and won't) demonstrates what an incredible feat it was.

No, Jack is still the king.

The only caveat I will add is that comparing across eras is difficult. It might be more accurate to say Jack was the best of his era, and Tiger the best of his and leave it at that.

Tiger brought eyes and interest to the game because he did things that even non-golfers could be awed by. Nobody is doing that anymore and along with the recession it's led to a significant drop in interest and sales in the industry. How much of that is Tiger and how much other factors is hard to say, but there is no denying that the numbers seem to run consistent with Tiger's success.

Jack has the Major record, but nobody ever played the game better than Tiger. And a strong argument could be made that Jones and Hogan are two and three before getting to Jack.

That said, the Tiger is bigger than the game talk is nonsense unless your point is simply that there are some who watched just because of him.
