Tiger Woods (3 Viewers)

Tiger not playing Bay Hill.

I bet he skips Augusta. I can't imagine he would tee it up there at this point and humiliate himself.

Yikes. Tough to watch.
You may be right, but I just can't see that. I think he at least gives it a shot. Even if he plays the first three holes 15 over, he can grimace, hold his back, and leave saying his glutes wouldn't activate or something. But at this point, I think he has to play every major.
No way he skips the Masters.

Withdrawing, or missing the cut, is a good bet.

Maybe he can be an honorary starter with Jack, Arnie, and Gary

Pretty sure they hit it down the middle so I doubt he gets asked to participate. Who wants to see 3 legends drive it down the middle and the 4th guy tag some spectator in the head.

It's been over... The EA thing isn't really a surprise. Why would they have a guy who can't make a cut on the cover of their game? Rory is the more attractive draw at this point.

I think Tiger's 7 year old son Sam is more likely to win a Major before Tiger does.

Rory isn't all that. I prefer my men more muscular.

But he'd withdraw after gingerly bending over to pick up his tee.

That's probably a mistake...Tiger is still a viable brand despite his disappearing game.

Nike still sell any Air Jordans?
Sort of. If you notice, Jordans don't have the Nike swoosh on them nor do they say "nike" anywhere on the shoe... only the Jumpman logo.

But I get your point. EA still makes Madden games.
But Madden didn't semi-retire in disgrace.

It makes perfect sense to me for EA Sports to move on from Tiger from a marketing perspective. Tiger has now spent multiple years not being able to pull his game together. That doesn't really get you excited to buy his golf game.

2013 = multiple years?

But Rory does? Like him, or hate him, Tiger is still the biggest draw on the Tour.

On Thursday and Friday anyway.

And then nobody watches Saturday and Sunday.

Tiger is still bigger than the sport.

I watch. If someone only watched because of Tiger, they were never into golf to begin with.

You got me, technically "nobody" was wrong.

Judge away, the fact remains - Tiger > Golf. I imagine that remains well after he hangs them up.

What does that even mean? We'll be watching Rory and Spieth and Bubba every weekend without giving Tiger another thought.

Will be the lowest rated Masters in years without Tiger (last year's was lowest in decades if I recall).. Golf fans might watch... the masses don't give a damn about those guys.

They will watch something else without giving golf another thought.

I agree about Tiger and his affect professional golf and TV ratings. But it still makes sense to move away from him when you are marketing a video game that comes out every year. What are the intro videos in the game going to show, his Augusta chip in on 16 in '05?

EA is betting on Rory for the long term (I guess they have to bet on someone)... right now, and in the near future Tiger would be the play.

Don't need to show anything but his face and use his name.

I would care if CBS was considering dropping it because of poor ratings, but that's not even close to happening. For the guy who liked golf before and after Tiger, why should he care about lower ratings? People not watching this crop of young golfers are missing a lot IMO. It's their loss.

When was the last time a wannabe golf fan (guys like you who have Tiger woodies in the pants) got to watch him on a weekend anyway?

So he goes down as arguably the best golfer of all time...not too shabby.
Tiger is arguably the best golfer of all time.

Jack is definitively the best golfer of all time.

A mere 18 majors and 19 runner-up finishes. Another 9 in third place.

Tiger: 14, 6 and 4.

I didn't watch golf back in Jack's time, was it as competitive? My understanding is the golfers in Tiger's era were/are simply better players. Does if follow that winning 18 in Jack's era is not as difficult as winning 14 in Tiger's era?

Thoughts?

While I would agree that sports in general get more competitive over time, winning 18 majors over 25 years, from age 22 to 46, is difficult in any era. Obviously, since no one else has done it.

There were plenty of worthy adversaries in Jack's day: Arnie, Player, Trevino, Watson.

Tiger himself always touted that majors were all that mattered. And even though most observers thought he would surpass Jack, the fact he hasn't (and won't) demonstrates what an incredible feat it was.

No, Jack is still the king.

The only caveat I will add is that comparing across eras is difficult. It might be more accurate to say Jack was the best of his era, and Tiger the best of his and leave it at that.

Tiger would drop his ball from the wrong spot anyway and claim innocence

Not a big fan at all.Of course that has nothing to do with his brand being bigger than the sport itself.

Eta.. The hate is awesome.

Tiger brought eyes and interest to the game because he did things that even non-golfers could be awed by. Nobody is doing that anymore and along with the recession it's led to a significant drop in interest and sales in the industry. How much of that is Tiger and how much other factors is hard to say, but there is no denying that the numbers seem to run consistent with Tiger's success.

Jack has the Major record, but nobody ever played the game better than Tiger. And a strong argument could be made that Jones and Hogan are two and three before getting to Jack.

That said, the Tiger is bigger than the game talk is nonsense unless your point is simply that there are some who watched just because of him.

Tiger haters are fascinating. Guy cheated on his wife and sometimes gets frustrated with his own play under the spotlight. That's the worst he's done. I call people who do those things "professional athletes."

They also have a bizarre tendency to lash out at people who enjoy watching him play with homophobic insults, which says a lot about them. I've never seen anyone sexualize sports fandom half as much as the anti-Tiger crowd. Who hurt you, Tiger haters?
