What golfer, that you have seen, appeared to want to do well when playing even when things were looking s***** in their personal lives besides Tiger and Phil?If Tiger is working so very hard right now to become better, even as you say harder than the other golfers, then it isn't working very well

Playing much earlier in the day was Tiger Woods, who began his round hoping to make up at least some part of an eight-shot deficit. After an even-par round in which he couldn't control his swing, he was exactly where he started — 3-over par and needing the leaders to move backward over the remainder of the day. They didn't and he'll start Sunday from 12 out — the biggest deficit he's faced at the Masters.looks like you got the eggface

As an aside to all the schticking, pretty amazing that even when he can't control his swing, the guy shoots a par round at the Masters.

Two weeks ago Tiger didn't have to play a draw the whole week. He tried twice and it was disastrous both times. Augusta forces right handers to play draws and he just can't do it right now. Blocks it right or comes quick and hooks it hard. He's still got some work left with that swing.

Hasn't this been his MO though lately? Inconsistent play then a great 4th round to get into the top 15 or top 10. Would anyone be surprised if he ends up there?

I wouldn't care either. Who cares what he does when there's no pressure? He's out of it and a non-story on Master's Sunday. Back to the drawing board for the next Major. This was a debacle. I saw Foley working with him on the range, and he was showing Tiger his old, bad move of his head and hands dropping down from the top which causes him to get stuck. Phil was free wheeling today and it's hard to see him losing tomorrow.
 
Tired of the all the old swing/new swing BS. It's old and tired. Every player is tinkering with their swing here and there. Every player fights themselves. That's the game. You are what you are.

Problem with Tiger is when he's not bringing the winning/drama he's easy to pile on. Lot of respectable sports journalists just of the opinion he's not a good guy. One thing to be a nut like Ron Artest but when someone says you're not a good guy it gives me pause.

I've hung in there a long time. Great entertaiment. Got my money's worth for sure. But what legend throws their club down and kicks it during the Masters? Sure it happens. But have some grace man. Look like a 16-year-old who wants to eff anything in sight. No control.

Before I was rooting for Tiger to break Jack's record. Not so much anymore.

Which is ironic, because he's more likable now than he's ever been.I'll tell you what is old and tired...all the "gentlemen's game" bs. The only people saying that are people who haven't spent much time around the game and people who are marketing the game. It's a myth. Example A...the one everybody always points to is Bobby Jones, arguably the biggest hothead among the big names in the history book, who started a no women/no blacks club...what a gentleman. A lot of people throwing around the word gentlemen just to pat themselves on the back and without much self-awareness. Walter Hagen? Widely regarded as the biggest ###hole in golf. There are a handful of people who were probably gentlemen...Harvey Penick, Nelson, Arnold, maybe Snead...but Hogen? Complete #### by most accounts. Jack? Complete #### by ALL accounts. Just stop with the gentlemen's game nonsense. Might as well declare your belief in Santa Claus. The gentlemen's game reference is about being willing to call a penalty on yourself and not distract your opponent when hitting a shot...things like that...not whatever people choose to infuse it with.
 
AJ, you are way off on this one.

It's a gentlemans game because of the conduct expected in the field of play. And yes, it's far more classy in between the ropes than football, basketball, baseball, hockey, even tennis. You rarely see golfers swear loudly, throw things, get into fights etc. The decorum expected far exceeds other sports.

No one said that the guys who play the sport would be humble or approachable or even moral off the course. Although I bet you if you compared the private lives and finances of golfers to other groups of athletes they would be more representative of the 'gentleman' than most athletes.

Tigers pissy displays are childish. What's worse is that he doesn't seem to get why they are childish. Neither do you, apparently.

I've been around the game all my life at many levels, ranging from picking the range at a country club at 12 to spending a year working on the PGA Tour (not playing) and just about everything in between. I'm talking about people who ascribe their own definitions to the "gentlemens game." I played collegiate and some mini-tour golf and I saw swearing and throwing things regularly. Swearing from just about everybody at one time or another. Throwing things, less so, but it still happened. And I saw it on the PGA Tour. Competition makes people run hot. It's just the way it is and the higher the stakes, the higher the investment and frustration when it goes wrong. Yes the decorum exceeds other sports, but we're not talking about a very high bar there. The bottom line is that if you had video of every golfer on the course, especially those not playing well, the opinions on how tour pros behave would be different. As it is we see those playing very well and Tiger, whether he's playing well or poorly. And God forbid you go get a sampling from a mini-tour event or even much uglier, a section pro-am. And locally, for every humble old pro who has been at the club for 40 years, there's a 30 year old assistant in debt to his bookie and his coke dealer, a 28 year old assistant who is a bigot and has club-throwing contests on the course, and a 45 year old assistant who has screwed the 17 year old daughters of members and shows up to work with black eyes once every year or so. The culture around the game of golf is not what people think it is.

And childish? Maybe, maybe not. Some people vent as part of their process when they're working. I've seen it in many disciplines in and outside of sports. I have no idea and I don't care. As long as he doesn't do anything dangerous and keeps the swearing to a minimum, I simply don't care.

Well said Jack. I still like that golf isn't the "in-your-face ...dance-at-the-opponent's-mishaps" that most other sports are today, but it still is most definitely a guy's lockerroom atmosphere. BTW - where did you play college golf and what did you do with the PGA.

It was a D-II school. I was on scholarship, but I wasn't very good at the end of the day. We were okay. About half our schedule was D-I tournaments and we had some top five finishes, so we were better than your average D-II school but that's not saying much. And I had a booth I took from event to event on tour.

I agree Jack. There is a lot of false decorum in golf. But that's part of the pitch, the PGA tours image, and Tigers antics stick out. If it was marketed differently, maybe it wouldnt seem so out of place. But kicking a club @ Augusta on Saturday is not what the sport wants, and it is out of place. And tiger is a doosh, most everyone around the game agrees.

Take it for what it's worth but I know a couple guys who have been around Tiger a few times and they said he was a jerk. Of course, he's not the only one. He just gets more attention than most. It'a like that with professional athletes. Some think they're bigger than others. Some don't. I know one of the top PGA golfers, who is from my hometown, and you couldn't ask for a nicer person. Golf isn't that different than other sports when it comes down to it.
 
I think the only thing more impressive than Tiger at his prime is his perfect 'let go of the club in disgust like someone else hit it'follow through move. Lots of practice really shows in its grace.
