It appears to me that he is just pressing right now. He seems more relaxed during some tournaments like the Byron Nelson, but tenses up more during majors because he's trying too hard to make perfect shots. Then he gets down on himself and misses short putts where he used to be automatic.

He definitely hears the echoes of all those saying he hasn't won a major in five years. He presses and gets frustrated and over-thinks in majors. Not enough to be good, or firing on 95% cylinders - you have to have every part of your game in absolute top form. For even someone like Tiger, that is tough to do. He's better than everyone else, just not that much better where he can afford to be even a little off. Everyone at their best - Tiger wins. If he's off a bit or presses - he doesn't.

Tiger had the most wins this early in a season than he's had his entire career. He's been the favorite in both majors this year. At least he contended fir the Masters. But this weekend was a choke. A four day choke (or a three day choke plus one day of not caring).

So to answer your question, they both choked. But one played damn good golf all weekend. The other was terrible.

People don't put enough stock in the variance of the game. Even Nicklaus never won more than 2 majors in a year. If you remove Tiger's exceptional 18 month stretch from late 1999-2001, he won an average of 1 major a year from his first Masters in 1997 through his 2008 US Open.

The best player typically doesn't win major after major.

I don't quite agree with all of that because sometimes guys that hang around win majors because the pressure gets to everyone else but them and they kind of back into it. Ogilvy and Webb Simpson come to mind as recent US Open examples of this.
