I'm a golf fan. I'll watch no matter what. But Tiger brought my into the game as a high school golfer. Before him I loved playing but never really watched. He was a spectacle.

I don't know if the PGA failed to convert casual Tiger watchers to real golf fans or if that's not really possible. I wonder about other sports that are primarily individual (tennis, auto racing) if they could point to similar transcendent figures that bumped viewership. We're they able to retain viewers after that dominant performer faded?

I will say that golf culture needs more Fowler, Bubba, Speith, dare I say Reed. They need young characters. Hell they need to market the individuals better.

Maybe rory becomes the next transcendent talent. If not, the tour needs to market the top 25 or so players as individuals with unique stories so people can identify with the players more.

Pretty much every major has some crazy story line going on Sunday with pressure shots by multiple players throughout the day it seems when I'm watching.

I bet I've watched that video over a hundred times over the years. I was never a big fan of watching golf on TV but I rarely missed a Sunday when Tiger was in the hunt. Never thought I could enjoy watching golf on TV as much as I could a football or basketball game. But when Tiger was dominating, I enjoyed watching it every bit as much as any other sport, maybe even more so. That was a great period in sports history. No one has ever dominated a sport to that extent. I feel lucky to have gotten to see it all play out. It's something I'm sure I'll tell my kids and grandkids about one day. That says a lot about what Tiger did.

Otherwise he's going to ruin the coverage(not his fault) by the tv coverage showing so many shots of his at the expense of seeing guys that are in the hunt. Although if these shots are incredibly bad, then there is some entertainment value in that.

It was also probably the greatest sports marketing moment in history. The Nike logo coming up perfectly and pausing right before it drops in the cup. The ironic thing is today there's a better chance of him chunking that chip and it racing right back to his feet.

The best part of that video was the look in Tiger's eyes. That was his greatness. No matter what history eventually says about Tiger, when he was on (people forget the years he was winning 40% of the tourneys he played in) he would crush every golfer who ever played this game. I have no question about that. Tiger was Nicklaus' length/mental game + Rory's swing + Crenshaw's putting + you name it's short game. He made some bad decisions (lifestyle + overdid the weights) or he could have obliterated Nicklaus' major record. Too bad.
