Tiger Woods (7 Viewers)

Last two times Tiger changed his swing it took him over a year to look right again.  Hard to say if it’ll happen again, but if he still looks off next Spring after being healthy all year, then we can start picking out the gravestones.
He doesn’t look off though. His ball striking is on. He’s moving the ball both ways. Hitting the stinger. Playing every shot. He’s one of the best in the world now.

His putting is just so bad it’s over shadowing that. He’s even a worse short putter than Spieth at this point, which means he may need to change something drastic.

If he were putting well and struggling with the irons I would say its possible for him to win again. But the putter being off is a big deal and leads me to think he's done being competitive.

I'm not especially a golf guy, but I would have thought putting would be way easier to fix than irons.

Putting is reading the greens, stroke, and a fine touch off how fast/strong your putting stroke is.
Maybe all the surgeries have interfered with his "touch" when putting.

But he was putting really well earlier this year, wasn't he?
Yes. That’s the weird thing.

Golf is so streaky. Tiger 2000-2009 was a major shift (being so good, week in and week out) in expectations. He will never be like that again.

But - again, to say he’s ‘done’ is crazy. Dude is hitting as far as anyone (except maybe DJ/Rahm) andhis irons are really sharp.

Exactly.

Dustin Johnson JUST last weekend TIED Woods for most wins in the last 10 years.

Glad he pulled the trigger on the putter change (which i called)...IF that starts clicking, he'll win.  Got his first big Friday, still needs a big Sunday.

-3 on the front 9 so far today
Rolling it well, but still missing big middle to short range.  Looks like mis-reads.  Interesting interview i heard this morning with Hank Haney, who said Tiger was such a great natural putter when he was with him that he didn't practice much compared to most.  So when he wasn't putting well, he just practiced more and got it back. I bet he's grinding over the practice greens now.

He seems to really be feeling that weight of not having won yet during his comeback.  Just when he feels like he gets momentum, he shoots himself in the foot.

To hear the announcers though, you’d have thought he shot +2 today.

Moved up to #67 in OWGR and would need at least a Top 5 finish in British  to qualify for Firestone.
Surprised he’s not adding a tourney considering the 8 Firestone wins. But there is a lot of golf left IF you include the full Playoff run and the Ryder Cup (which he is).

I can only think of two reasons why he would be on the Ryder Cup team.  One would be sportsmanship and fair play to give the European team a chance to compete.  The second would be for TV ratings.

He clearly thinks he can make it and is likely getting feedback it’s possible, with a really strong finish.

He has averaged 6.23 points for OWGR per tourney this year.  If that was used as his number, he'd be 10th in OWGR rating right now.  OWGR uses 40 tourneys as the minimum though, whether you've played in 40 tourneys in the last 2 years or not.  He hasn't, so his point per tourney is stated as 1.9 instead.  He is legitimately playing like a top 10 PGA tour player right now and improving.  Sorry if that doesn't fit all of the haters narratives.

This.  He's consistently putting himself in a position to win.  Not a lot of golfers doing that.
He’s only been in contention to win twice this year.   Which is impressive, don’t get me wrong.  But to suggest he is consistently in contention is wrong.  In fact, he hasn’t been “in contention” to win since he blew up on 15 at bay hill in mid March.    And, he wasn’t winning that tourney even if he didn’t blow up (Rory unstoppable that day).

He’s been great this year IMO, but he is still not close to being a top 10 player in the world.  He never will be.

See, this is the drivel that I just don’t understand.  He’s not top 10 right now, but even if all he does is stay healthy for two years and play at the same level he currently is, he will be top 10 in OWGR by the end of next year.

That’s assuming he won’t continue to improve.  He’s 8 months removed from first picking up a club after back fusion.  He’s also 8 months removed from a swing change forced by that surgery.  He’s also a guy known for grinding and improving his game when playing poorly.  Sure, he might not ever be top 10 again, but that’s more unlikely than likely IMO and to state otherwise is being willfully ignorant.

I don’t think he will be in the top 10 if he plays the way he is currently.  Cherry pick whatever metric you want.

Wake me up when he comes close to contending in a major.  Until then, this is a nice story and awesome for golf.  The legacy reboot starts when he wins.

He's hitting fairways and greens now.  Only a matter of time.  Look at the players who finished behind him this week.  He can win any week he gets hot with the putter.

Agree. He is one of 40-50 guys who *could win any week.  Lightning in a bottle and all that.

I think he was top ten in putting stats this week. Might be wrong.

Still lost by, what, 10 strokes?
