timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (2 Viewers)

OK the first 3 posts are fully updated. The new formatting, for some reason, won't allow me to bold anything, so I used capitals- looks strange though. Sorry about that.

Nearly all the picks were awesome. Regarding the Tunnel pick from Willy Wonka, that's a great pick as well, but for me the scariest part of that film is when Charlie and his grandpa are floating up to the ceiling and have to burp their way down. For some reason that always terrified me as a kid- not as much as the Child Catcher, though!!

I don't think I need to set any guidelines for child actor or shootout, other than what I've already said (for shootout - realism COUNTS)

But I guess for Rock & Roll movie Tupside has pointed out there should be some clarification, as there are a lot of types. Concert films, docs, straight up Hollywood movies, etc

I really would like for people to take what they want to, and explain why. I don't want anything to be deemed off limits. But that could leave so much wiggle room that people inevitably get mad that I didn't set some sort of a standard beforehand, once I do the rankings.

Honestly, I like all of those kinds of movies. BUT... CREATIVITY (in the film) has to count for something.

Did you have any particular guidelines in mind for that one, tim?

Don't ask me why I can't bold. I have no idea. I can do it on my laptop at home, but not at work. Go figure. I'll fix it all later on.

I don't want to stall any longer. Sorry about that. At work all day with my list and then I leave work and I'm posting from phone with no list.

I'll go with

2.2 Russian Roulette, gambling scene from The Deerhunter

Not sure if this was on anyone's radar but whatever. Who knows about VBD in things like this

Can someone PM Tup

Yes, it was on someone's radar.

Now I can respond from work, but it puts my responses on top instead of below. Screw this. :hot:

That happens to me sometimes when I quote (but not all the time) - can't seem to get the cursor below the quote box.

OK- I figured it out. The problem is with Explorer. When I switch to Mozilla, it allows me to do everything as before.

I also have added all judging criteria to the bottom of the 3rd post. It's not well-organized- I simply pasted it whenever somebody posts something- but it's all there for anyone to look through.

2.3 Requiem for a Dream - Drug Movie

A relatively deep category, but this movie, for me, is just a powerhouse. Part of what makes it so powerful is that it depicts drug use and abuse and addiction through so many different lenses...different ages (Ellen Burstyn's performance is phenomenal), races, sexes, etc...Rarely do you get that degree of heterogeneity

Additionally, Aronofsky's directorial style here is trippy and jittery, with jarring cuts, great use of music and different foci thoruhgout

This is a brutal, powerful film about lives broken by drugs

Dammit!!!This draft will hard.

-Here's a little easier paste for you tim-

SHOOTOUT CRITERIA: Anything goes, REALISM counts.

ROCK AND ROLL MOVIES CRITERIA: ANYTHING GOES! Concert film, documentary, musical (bear in mind I'm generally no fan of these), biopic, even a film about the industry with no music at all. CREATIVITY COUNTS!! This will be hard to judge, fun to judge, and will inevitably make me 5-6 new frenemies.

CHILD ACTOR CRITERIA: My definition of child is pre-pubescent, let's say under 12 but I never really had any intention of being a stickler about precise age. CHILD, please.

If you're worried about something feel free to PM me. Also, I like to see people explain their pick, clearly and concisely, helps give me a fresh angle.

Starting tommorrow thru Thursday, I'll be in all day training sessions so please autoskip me and I'll make up my picks when I get a chance.

2.7 - John Cleese - Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Actor in Multiple Roles

They all did multiple roles - he was the best.

2.8 - Ironman -Superhero Movie

Robert Downey was such a great choice for this role. I especially liked that the character gains personal insight during the course fo the story. It has great special effects and nice humor touches. It works as a story even without the superhero factor.

and there goes about 10 movies with it :o

I'm going to do a little offense and a little defense with this pick.

2.9 Robert De Niro as Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull (portrayal of real/historical person)

I realize this category is very deep, but with this pick I get not only one of the consensus greatest performances of all time, but I also block any of you fools from taking the scenes from this movie as fight scenes or sports scenes.

Yeah. That's right. BAM!

higgins, did you take The Dark Knight or The Dark Knight Rises? I think the former but tim or someone later rendered your pick as the latter.

Yep. And I killed a whole bunch of dance numbers with the Singin' in the Rain pick. Score!

I took the former ('The Dark Knight') -- the link I added was a parody on 'The..Rises' for entertainment purposes so that may have caused some confusion, but I did indeed pick the former.

That's a category? Oh man.

Thanks, bro. Ignore any incorrect references from here on out in case they persist. I've got you down for the right selection and it's my category to judge.

2.11 Nicholas Cage, Adaptation -- Multiple Performances in a Movie

Great movie, amazing performance, weak category. Had to take it before it was gone. I really only had one other role on my radar for the entire category.
