timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (3 Viewers)

Tim, I will judge car chase and shocking scene if you need more judges.
Oh yay. :kicksrock: Guess it serves me right for making a first-round pick in a category with no judge or criteria, but I'll warn you in advance that your rankings will likely incur my great wrath. ;)

nah, no chance of that (if Tim ok's me, of course). It's a great car chase, and it benefits by being a real one, and not a CGI-fest.

What are you looking for on this one - as in "WTF was that?", "i can't believe that is in a movie", "i never saw that twist coming", or yes to any of the above??
I sent Tim a PM in case he missed my post, basically so I can post criteria before we get too deep. But, assuming I do it, sure to all of the above.

Whew. :)

3.09 -- 'The King's Speech', Movie in England.

I have zero idea how JML will like it but it doesn't have Hugh Grant and is not set in the 1800's. One thing I found interesting was

with the guy that wrote the screenplay -- he asked the Queen mother if it was okay for him to do the project, to which she asked for him to wait until she passed (she lived to be 100+).

2.19 "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" (Mike Myers) (Portrayals: Multiple Performances)

Yeah, baybee, YEAH!!!
Nothing against the pick, but it speaks to the weakness of the category that Mike Myers will probably do well here.
Agree and disagree. I find Myers' performances in the first two AP movies (not so much the third) to be extremely funny, hilarious even. However, you're absolutely right that this is a near-impossible category in degree of difficulty, with 25 picks needed.

2.21: Dustin Hoffman as Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels in Tootsie (Dramatic Actor in a Comedic Role)
This is a great pick.
Hope the judge agrees :D
Krippling here...

Not a valid pick IMO, but that is the judges call. We discussed yesterday (obliquely so as to not spotlight).

The actor is not playing different characters. There's no suspension of disbelief for the audience watching the same RL actor play different characters. It's known to the audience that the same actor is wearing a disguise, under the premise he couldn't get work as himself because he is too difficult to work with.

Not my call, just my opinion.

Great comment if the pick was for multiple performances, but my impression was that it was for dramatic actor in a comedic role, as noted by the drafter. No?

Hi. My name is Bobby, and I'm a moron. I've been addicted to idiotic behavior for my entire internet life. I first realized I had a problem....

3.07 "Superman" (1978) (Superheroes)

This is the original with the late Christopher Reeve, who, in my opinion, *is* Superman, at least so far. Reeve's performance is touching and inspiring, the plot is good, and while there are certainly some flaws, and the humor and some other elements are a bit dated, this is an iconic film. Just hope the wacky judge agrees.

;) Could happen to anyone (and my mentioning it means I'm about to make five worse such errors). I probably jinxed you with the mad props yesterday for being on top of absolutely everything.

Sorry, computer was being glitchy when I was attempting a PM.

Don't know which way to go for this category, but this was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the category. I am sure this category can be filled with more gruesome scenes and I didn't want to go the spoiler/twist route. Long story short, I am still surprised this is in a movie from the 70s every time I watch it. Who isn't shocked seeing a little girl ram a cross between her legs?

3.10: "Let Jesus #### You" - crucifix scene from the Exorcist (shocking scene)

(obviously NSFW)

BTW, you suck. You should be punting your own category.

I see today is continuation of yesterday's theme - one great pick after another. List #2 shredded.

I see tish155 lurking so if Dear Leader returns with a pick, please PM me. No autoskip if I come up in the next 45 minutes or so.

Sorry to be the guy who vacillates about autoskip, but keep us on skip unless one of us posts that we're around and picking.

Thanks.

i am def lurking because i am about to step away from my desk and dont want to lose my turn lol

Sorry guys- on my iPhone- poker scene from The Sting- gambling- will link later.

Robert Shaw cheats, but Paul Newman cheats better.

IMO part 2 is way more superior than the 1st and def much better than the 3rd (which shouldve never been made) Dont get me wrong the original is great, but BTTF part 2 is def my favorite!

How in the world can BTTF2 be your favorite of the three?

Different strokes indeed...

I hated that movie. It gave a huge headache. The first film was a superb light comedy. They should have left well enough alone.

There was something deeply disturbing about a 12 year old playing a prostitute that etched this role in our collective memory.

3.13 Portayals best performance by child actor - Jody Foster, Taxi Driver

Travis and Iris in the diner

Since Jodie Foster was only 12 during fi lming, her 20-year-old sister, Connie, doubled her in scenes with adult dialogue or sexually suggestive scenes. Foster had to have a four-hour interview with a psychiatrist to prove she was mentally capable of handling the part of Iris. “There was a welfare worker on the set with me every day, and she saw the daily rushes of all my scenes and made sure I wasn’t on set when Robert De Niro said a dirty word,” Foster said at the time. “Actually, I think the only thing that could have had a bad effect on me was the blood in the shooting scene. It was really neat, though. It was red, sugary stuff. And they used Styrofoam for bones.”

When you did Taxi Driver and were simultaneously making Disney films, were people trying to talk you out of playing Iris?
Well, I did Taxi Driver before I did Freaky Friday, but, yeah, there were lots of people that told my mother – cos I wasn’t that involved in my career at that point – “What are you doing? She shouldn’t do that movie.” But my mom is a big film fan and we were always seeing European movies, whether it was Jean-Luc Godard or Fellini. She was a big fan of Martin Scorsese and she wanted me to be in films where I was taken seriously and that were about important topics. That was a great choice on her part.

How did Scorsese and De Niro behave around you?
I remember them feeling like they had to have a conversation with me about what each scene was. In the scene where I basically pull down his zipper and give him a blow job, I remember the two of them were trying to talk about how they were going to discuss it with me, and then one of them started laughing. And the other one was like, [whispering] “Shut up, shut up!” And then he started giggling too, and then he would be admonishing himself. And the other one would start laughing again. I finally just walked up and said, “What, so you want me to unzip his pants? I mean… So what?” I think they quickly realised they didn’t have to make such a big deal out of it.

Did it have a big impact on your career?
That film really changed my career and it changed me. Up until then, people would only ask me to act natural. I thought that’s what actors did: read the lines and act natural. That just didn’t seem like a very intelligent job, you know? I felt like, “I’m not gonna do that when I get older cos it’s not very interesting.” And through De Niro working with me and trying to do improvs and have me understand the process of creating a character, it was like smelling salts. I woke up and was like, “Oh wow, this is way more satisfying than I thought!” It’s up to the actor to bring that stimulation to a part and I didn’t realise that before Taxi Driver.

Foster was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the 49th Academy Awards in 1977.

3.13 Portayals best performance by child actor - Jody Foster, Taxi

Will fill in later. Regarding criteria, she was 14 at the Academy Awards (film released in 1976), but 12 at the time of filming.

this, Portman, and Linda Blair in the Exorcist were in a tier of their own for me.

3.14 Wizard of Oz - Flying Monkey Attack - Scenes that scared you as a kid

Knew this wasn;t lasting much longer.

A few multiple characters just got waxed (although all were fairly weak picks... ok, maybe not the witch. That might have been a decent late rounder.)
