4.22 - Inglorious Basterds - Nazi film

It's funny, when I read tim's criteria for the category this is the first film that comes to mind, but I got a feeling tim hates this movie and it will score terribly, but I want it either way.

Anyway, imo Inglorious Basterds is among Tarantino's best. Phenomenal script, phenomenal acting, great visuals, and a completely engrossing story filled with several phenomenal scenes that I could conceivably see scoring well in many of the scene categories. But I think I'll keep it here.

 
5.3 - Tony Curtis in "Some Like It Hot"- dramatic actor in a comedic role

Although his early film roles were partly the result of his good looks, by the later half of the 1950s he became a notable and strong screen presence. He began proving himself to be a “fine dramatic actor,” having the range to act in numerous dramatic and comedy roles. In his earliest parts he acted in a string of "mediocre" films, including swashbucklers, westerns, light comedies, sports films, and a musical. However, by the time he starred in another famous movie made in 1953 with his wife Janet Leigh, "his first clear success," notes critic David Thomson, his acting had progressed immensely.

He won his first serious recognition as a skilled dramatic actor in a 1957 move with co-star Burt Lancaster. The following year he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in another drama in 1958. Curtis then gave what many believe was his best acting, three interrelated roles in the comedy Some Like It Hot (1959).
In 2000, the American Film Institute listed Some Like It Hot as the greatest American comedy film of all time.

And, not that it's relevant to the category, but Marylin Monroe couldn't have been hotter in that movie had she actually gotten naked.

This was the role I thought might fit in the "multiple performances" category. Even funnier, Curtis was basically impersonating Cary Grant when playing the millionaire, to which Grant, when he saw the parody, stated "I don't talk like that". Even though he clearly does.

Supposedly when Orry-Kelly was measuring all three stars for dresses, he half-jokingly told Marilyn Monroe, "Tony Curtis has a nicer butt than you," at which point Monroe pulled open her blouse and said, "Yeah, but he doesn't have #### like these!"

5.04 - The Holy Mountain - No Idea What This Movie Is About

I figure it's about time something from this category goes. I had 2 films in mind for this category, but reading Krista's criteria makes this the easy choice.

Long meandering shots? Check. Non-liner storytelling? Maybe, to be honest I don't know. Absence of storytelling? Check. Midgets? Check. An arm-less midget? check. A limb-less dwarf? Check.

The film is truly the most bizarre and surreal film I've ever seen, filled with tonnes of strange symbolism, female nudity, and penis, lots and lots of penis. And as soon as you think you have an idea of what the movie is about or is trying to tell you, the film will take a turn to ensure you're scratching your head throughout. The funny thing is the film is actually quite excellently shot with lots of stunning imagery, which makes the film watchable despite all the crazy happening.

The film's trailer actually does a pretty good job of showing you what you're in for:

The Defiant Ones would have been a good pick for comedic actor in a dramatic role if we had that category still. Operation Petticoat was more indicative of Curtis' roles.

What the mother #### was that movie trailer. Holy #### that has to win. I couldn't think of one movie to take in that category. Now I know what the winner will be

I never saw Mrs. Doubtfire, so I don't know. If that's the name of the character from that movie, then you guys are probably right. Oh well.

Oh, sorry. They could switch that to one of the dance sequences and probably get a top score. Guess that won't happen, though.

I lobby to have that picked moved to Dance Scene and the category deleted and struck from memory.

pretty sure I will be taking the top dance scene. But that can come in second

I'd love to, but Mrs. Rannous took Singin' In the Rain, so she would have to agree.

I'd like to add "best prison movie". I think that would be a fun category to consider. It would include both civil prisons and POW camps. My proposal is to give Mrs. Rannnous first selection in place of her Singin' In the Rain pick. But she has to agree.

ETA- or, as an alternative, she could take Singin In the Rain in another category, such as dance.

Mrs. Rannous would be doing everyone a huge favor replacing her pick with a dance sequence from tha same movie.

Prison movie is a good option. Other ideas?
