5.19 - Metropolis - Jon Freder sees Moloch - Dream Sequence

(the vision itself starts around 1:50)One of my top 5 films of all time is Metropolis. And this sequence fits perfectly for the category and criteria. Is it a dream? A vision after getting hit on the head? Who knows - it's profound, and seeing the machine as a living, sacrifice-demanding entity sets Freder in motion for the rest of the film.

5.15 Mulholland Drive (No Idea What This Movie Is About)

Took me a while to settle on Mulholland Drive for this category. I came up with a very long list of movies that I liked for it, but all of them were understandable in one way or another. Others just weren't as good as Mulholland Drive (I put Eraserhead in that group). My conclusion after several times seeing it and being in love with the film is that there really isn't a point. None of the mystery, none of the possible dreams, means anything at all. Not the box, not Club Silencio, not the house. At least not as a greater whole.

Speaking of Club Silencio, amazing scene.

Nice pick. Was contemplating taking the "This is the girl" scene for the shooting a movie scene category.

This scene has been ingrained in my brain for over a decade now.

Was scared away from this one based on the judge's 'realism' criteria

It's possible I didn't read the judges criteria before I picked.

I should point out earlier today judges were encouraged to ignore their own criteria.

Should be interesting case. The scene is widely recognized as a truly great shootout. The movie was a fresh original in 1999, and personally I much prefer the original over the two big budget (bloated) sequels.

Realism in the Matrix - with Neo moving at 'bullet speed' - is a bit different than the realism of a old school western. Taking out a long gun rifleman on top of the hotel 300 feet away with a 6 shooter isn't realistic. In THAT world.From a realtively sparse script this scene played out in rich, breathtaking detail. It was a leap forward in film making. But at the end of the day, it is surrealism on celluloid. If the judge chooses to dismiss on that point alone and ignore the brilliant achievement of the cinematography, so be it.

The big science fiction blockbuster of 1999 was going to be Star Wars, Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, but by comparison to The Matrix, which took audiences by surprise on its release exactly ten years ago today, it turned out to be the most eagerly-awaited sci-fi film of 1978. The Matrix was the phenomenon which made George Lucas' serial-style adventure seem as quaint as tie-dye loon pants. It did the proper sci-fi job of surfing the zeitgeist exactly in every single aspect: The long leather coats and cool shades. The pounding techno music which would have given John Williams a headache. The frenzy of paranoia about computers whipped up by the millennium bug (remember that?). The notion that a computer geek could be an outlaw rebel hero. The end-of-century sensation that an apocalypse was coming even if all our Windows 98 platform PCs kept on working. The Matrix didn't come from nowhere, and indeed arrived in the midst of a batch of similar projects it left standing commercially. Like Star Wars in 1977, it was the film of its moment -- it even dared to set its artificial city in the late 20th Century as if aware of a sell-by date -- and has seeped into subsequent movies which have either blatantly or subtly drawn from aspects of The Matrix -- ranging from its action-friendly fashion sense to franchise-building business plan.

One of the breakthroughs of The Matrix was 'bullet-time', a photo-process designed entirely to show off gunplay (and swirling coats). It was groundbreaking and opened up a whole new world of possibilities in action story telling. I hope that is rewarded in the judging, but we'll see.

4.22 - Inglorious Basterds - Nazi film

It's funny, when I read tim's criteria for the category this is the first film that comes to mind, but I got a feeling tim hates this movie and it will score terribly, but I want it either way.

Anyway, imo Inglorious Basterds is among Tarantino's best. Phenomenal script, phenomenal acting, great visuals, and a completely engrossing story filled with several phenomenal scenes that I could conceivably see scoring well in many of the scene categories. But I think I'll keep it here.

Yeah I wanted this, but I've already got a Tarantino on the mantlepiece.

I know Tim didn't like the factual inaccuracies in the film (true story)

Adding another now creates an unfair advantage for the first 5 rounds IMO. People may have wanted that category in first round and now anyone has that chance. It's like adding a 5th RB slot when you had 4 in the 7th round.

To fix this issue we could choose a category that's both incredibly deep and not top heavy, like best opening title sequence for example. But if the only options are to keep the category or have one less category, I say we just keep the category as is.
