timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (2 Viewers)

5.19 - Metropolis - Jon Freder sees Moloch - Dream Sequence

(the vision itself starts around 1:50)One of my top 5 films of all time is Metropolis. And this sequence fits perfectly for the category and criteria. Is it a dream? A vision after getting hit on the head? Who knows - it's profound, and seeing the machine as a living, sacrifice-demanding entity sets Freder in motion for the rest of the film.

5.15 Mulholland Drive (No Idea What This Movie Is About)

Took me a while to settle on Mulholland Drive for this category. I came up with a very long list of movies that I liked for it, but all of them were understandable in one way or another. Others just weren't as good as Mulholland Drive (I put Eraserhead in that group). My conclusion after several times seeing it and being in love with the film is that there really isn't a point. None of the mystery, none of the possible dreams, means anything at all. Not the box, not Club Silencio, not the house. At least not as a greater whole.

Speaking of Club Silencio, amazing scene.
Nice pick. Was contemplating taking the "This is the girl" scene for the shooting a movie scene category.
This scene has been ingrained in my brain for over a decade now.

Ah ####. Thought this would last longer, too.
Was scared away from this one based on the judge's 'realism' criteria
:ninja:

It's possible I didn't read the judges criteria before I picked.

I should point out earlier today judges were encouraged to ignore their own criteria.

Should be interesting case. The scene is widely recognized as a truly great shootout. The movie was a fresh original in 1999, and personally I much prefer the original over the two big budget (bloated) sequels.

Realism in the Matrix - with Neo moving at 'bullet speed' - is a bit different than the realism of a old school western. Taking out a long gun rifleman on top of the hotel 300 feet away with a 6 shooter isn't realistic. In THAT world. From a realtively sparse script this scene played out in rich, breathtaking detail. It was a leap forward in film making. But at the end of the day, it is surrealism on celluloid. If the judge chooses to dismiss on that point alone and ignore the brilliant achievement of the cinematography, so be it.

from an article on RT regarding the legacy of The Matrix

The big science fiction blockbuster of 1999 was going to be Star Wars, Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, but by comparison to The Matrix, which took audiences by surprise on its release exactly ten years ago today, it turned out to be the most eagerly-awaited sci-fi film of 1978. The Matrix was the phenomenon which made George Lucas' serial-style adventure seem as quaint as tie-dye loon pants. It did the proper sci-fi job of surfing the zeitgeist exactly in every single aspect: The long leather coats and cool shades. The pounding techno music which would have given John Williams a headache. The frenzy of paranoia about computers whipped up by the millennium bug (remember that?). The notion that a computer geek could be an outlaw rebel hero. The end-of-century sensation that an apocalypse was coming even if all our Windows 98 platform PCs kept on working. And, of course, the notion that Keanu Reeves was potentially the wisest dude on the planet.

The Matrix didn't come from nowhere, and indeed arrived in the midst of a batch of similar projects it left standing commercially. Like Star Wars in 1977, it was the film of its moment -- it even dared to set its artificial city in the late 20th Century as if aware of a sell-by date -- and has seeped into subsequent movies which have either blatantly or subtly drawn from aspects of The Matrix -- ranging from its action-friendly fashion sense to franchise-building business plan.
One of the breakthroughs of The Matrix was 'bullet-time', a photo-process designed entirely to show off gunplay (and swirling coats). It was groundbreaking and opened up a whole new world of possibilities in action story telling. I hope that is rewarded in the judging, but we'll see.

I hate that category, too. Since no one's taken anything in it, could we punt it and get something better?
i think someone took something. If not, seconded
Someone took Singin' in the Rain, unfortunately.
Oh, sorry. They could switch that to one of the dance sequences and probably get a top score. Guess that won't happen, though.

Awful category.
I took the scene where Lena Lamont is being wired for sound. I could switch to the 25 point dance number if you want. Just let me know.

I think the consensus is we would love for you to move that pick to dance sequence (should score well for you) and we'll drop the category for another one (will benefit the entire draft).

Nice of you to be flexible, thanks.

21. John Madden's Lunchbox: autoskip

22. Kumerica: OTC
23. Tremendous Upside: On deck
24. AcerFC
25. Usual21

So this is where we are at I believe.

5.07 The Passenger (1975): Long Take

Michelangelo Antonioni's film starring Jack Nicholson features a roughly seven-minute tracking shot near the end of the film. Hopefully, my assumption that the Long Take Judge is familiar with the movie is correct, as the scene (linked here) contains some serious spoilers.
Nice pick, friend.

Looks like the content got deleted (copyright b.s.). Here is another one of the same shot.

Was definitely on my radar, and anyone else who has researched the category.

She was in jail because they thought she was nuts. Not her fault. She was trying to warn them.
Still not the the best parenting skills. Just sayin' - wouldn't want her as my mom.
Yes, but to give the world your only begotten son takes a certain sacrifice.

To give JC all the spiritual and practical help he needs to save the world takes a very special parent.

A parent who forgoes their traditional parenting role to ensure their son becomes the worlds savior is not the parent you want, but is the perfect parent for the child who will be the redeemer of man kind.

K4 - much of the draft came from KP's input on page 1. Still some good ideas here.

timschochet wanted to replace the scene subcategory with a movies category (Prison movies). KP wanted to keep it a scene thingy.

IMO what held up the judging in a couple others were b/c we were focused on the whole movie. People usually want to watch what they are judging, and if there is stuff people can look up on youtube for scenes or a performance streamlines it for all involved. Couple of the movie drafts I ran focused on weirder categories, but think these a decent start to get the discussion rolling for now.

4.22 - Inglorious Basterds - Nazi film

It's funny, when I read tim's criteria for the category this is the first film that comes to mind, but I got a feeling tim hates this movie and it will score terribly, but I want it either way.

Anyway, imo Inglorious Basterds is among Tarantino's best. Phenomenal script, phenomenal acting, great visuals, and a completely engrossing story filled with several phenomenal scenes that I could conceivably see scoring well in many of the scene categories. But I think I'll keep it here.
Yeah I wanted this, but I've already got a Tarantino on the mantlepiece.

I know Tim didn't like the factual inaccuracies in the film (true story)

Going forward, I'll need to be on auto-skip at all times. My availability is going to be unpredictable over the next few weeks. I'll be around enough to stay involved, though.

The film's trailer actually does a pretty good job of showing you what you're in for:

:tebow:

Anyone else getting a bunch of pornos to the right for further viewing on youtube?

One thing I've been thinking about for days is how testosterone rich this draft this is - the picks, yes, but that's driven by the categories.

Is there a way to pick something that would make this a little more feminine?

####ed you up there a little bit, didn't I?

5.17 Darren McGavin as The Old Man Parker in A Christmas Story - parent

He taught them to curse; he speaks Italian; he knows how to save a Christmas dinner; and in the end he gave Ralphie just what he wanted for Christmas.
... and you just wiped out my fight scene pick.

How about just having one less category?
:goodposting:Adding another now creates an unfair advantage for the first 5 rounds IMO. People may have wanted that category in first round and now anyone has that chance. It's like adding a 5th RB slot when you had 4 in the 7th round.
To fix this issue we could choose a category that's both incredibly deep and not top heavy, like best opening title sequence for example. But if the only options are to keep the category or have one less category, I say we just keep the category as is.

Round 4: No Idea What This Movie is About...

Head, starring The Monkees.

I remember watching this around the time I was 11 years old (circa 1976), and have not watched it since. A sampling of the YouTubes tells me I should watch it again. In hindsight, I think this was where I was first exposed to the notion that weird could be cool, KISS notwithstanding.

Thus far YouTube has disappointed me in my effort to nail down my pick for Fight Scene category. Once again I am selecting something I have not seen in over 20 years. I'm pretty sure I want the final fight scene, but if memory serves there were a few fight scenes in this movie, so I reserve the right to tweak this selection if I find better clips.

Round 5 - Fight Scene

... links to a not so great montage.

Another, super easy idea would be to add a Wildcard scene. Just draft our favorite scenes, least favorite, scary, whatever. Again, we are a a little disadvantage since we are 100+ movies in and a bunch more taken out by the rule, but this could be a compromise.

Not exactly what you are seeking but this is my personal favorite scene from that movie.
