timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (6 Viewers)

Actually the scene where the sub charged the ship, and all that you could see were lights charging along the water's surface scared me more, but it's a fairly obscure reference and I can't find a solid link.
How many of us have experienced this so far in this draft? Got something in mind, but just can't find the clip.

And how about this one: you seem to recall a certain scene in a movie that will fit one of the categories really well. Then when you go to look for it, either (a) the scene was a lot more "meh" than you remember, or else (b) you can't find the scene at all and you wonder if you're mind's playing tricks on you.
Yes, I get both a and b a lot. In fact, I was doubting if there was a scene, however brief, where lights along the ocean's surface were in fact seen charging ships in 20,000 Leagues.

Round 12 ... One of the best ever.

Double Indemnity - Film about Adultery/Sex

In 1938, Walter Neff, an experienced salesman of the Pacific All Risk Insurance Co., meets the seductive wife of one of his clients, Phyllis Dietrichson, and they have an affair. Phyllis proposes to kill her husband to receive the proceeds of an accident insurance policy and Walter devises a scheme to receive twice the amount based on a double indemnity clause. When Mr. Dietrichson is found dead on a train-track, the police accept the determination of accidental death. However, the insurance analyst and Walter's best friend Barton Keyes does not buy the story and suspects that Phyllis has murdered her husband with the help of another man. Yesterday Krista asked to be released from judging the WTF category. I begged her to stay on, but she did not respond. If she leaves, we got a real problem here. I never would have allowed this to become a category without a judge in hand, given the task involved. Is anyone willing to step to the plate here?
If you start watching one per night you should be ok by the time the draft ends.
I someone watches one of these movies a night, he/she will need a lobotomy.
i wonder if mrs r knew she was up when she posted this. If not, you are up

Round 13 - Romantic Gesture ... quite an extended gesture, or better yet, an overarching romantic gesture; and the payoff to the viewer at the end is super-sweet.

The Tramp pays for blind girl's eye operation so that she may see -

Sorry. I didn't realise I was up.

13.18 - Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes in The Aviator

Hughes was brilliant. It's just too bad there was no treatment for him back in the day. DiCaprio captures Hughes perfectly.

Scene that scared you as a kid

Laugh all you want, but I thought this was what sex and masturbation was all about.

I was fairly naive as a kid and we didn't have sex ed.

Where was I going to find a dwarf? Why were cream pies involved?

I knew you weren't supposed to masturbate, especially if your hands went all green.

Needless to say this scene is NSFW

11.21 - Kentuckyfried Movie - Catholic High School Girls in Trouble

Make-ups picks:

12.21: Quvenzhané Wallis as Hushpuppy in Beasts of the Southern Wild (Performance by Child Actor)

This performance was a big deal locally -- the movie was produced in and around New Orleans and almost all the actors are locals. I thought it was just a "whatevs" art film until it started getting Oscar buzz. At age 9, Ms. Wallis was nominated by the Academy for Best Actress. Not a ton on YouTube for a film this recent, but here's a little bit:
Agree with the pick. However, the only thing worse for me than voiceover in a movie is an 8 year old doing the voiceover in a movie.

Put me on skip for today as well. The boss man is due in today, so probably won't be able to get in here very much until about 4:00.

I would nominate this guy for best parent if he were eligible

(zombie alert, not sure if it is suitable for work, no gore but zombies)

I'm not really happy with any of my choices for my 2 picks coming up. This is going to be a long 2nd half of the draft.

maybe I should say, I feel like anything I pick is on par with everything else. Nothing stands out and I can't decide which two categories to take

In theory, at least, we should all be choosing movies/scenes/performances that are going to score lower in the final rankings. Some categories that are pretty deep that may not be the case, but for some categories that we haven't yet filled, we're looking at having to climb out of a pretty deep hole.

Tim, sorry for the extra work but I'm going to move one of my picks:

Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) - Performance by a child actor

I'll have shocking scene back open now.

This is another personal favorite. I really think this movie is under rated.

14.2 Scott Pilgrim vs the world, superhero

PM going to Kumerica
