Are we really ip to date? No picks due?

Sorry I haven't been ablt to commit time to this, seems like a grat setup with the franchise rule.

I've just been getting crushed 24/7.

14.06 Sunshine - Outerspace

Sunshine is a 2007 British science fiction adventure thriller film directed by Danny Boyle. The film was adapted from a screenplay written by Alex Garland about the crew of a spacecraft on a dangerous mission to the Sun. In 2057, with the Earth in peril from the dying Sun, the crew is sent on a mission to reignite the star with a nuclear bomb with the mass of Manhattan. The script was based on a scientific back-story that took the characters on a psychological journey. The director cast a group of international actors for the film, and had the actors live together and learn about topics related to their roles, as a form of method acting. To have the actors realistically react to visual effects that would be implemented in post-production, the filmmakers constructed live sets to serve as cues. The ensemble cast features Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis, Troy Garity, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong, Chipo Chung, and Mark Strong.

Me too. It's not the typical "Sci Fi" movie that will fill this category, but it's a great pyschological character study and has a very good cast. I will admit I don't love the final act where the other ship captain is introduced as a protagonist - but the film recovers quickly and otherwise it's a great flick.

Sunshine is a great science fiction movie and a terrible, irredeemably bad horror-thriller. The third act is miserable. Will never be able to forgive Boyle for screwing it up so badly. Maybe that's the point. Maybe the true horror is that a movie with so much potential was inexplicably tied to a movie with so little.

Yeah, my original post was going to be "I absolutely love this movie until the final 10 - 15 minutes." It felt forced. But on subsequent viewings, I warmed to it.

Yeah I can't understand why he went in that direction when it didn't fit in at all with the rest of the movie. I do forgive him though because it was so enjoyable before that and I did like the end (afer the protagonist was done away with).

14.7 -

- Real / Historical PortrayalVal Kilmer is one of those actors that gets a lot of scorn for some poor choices, but man, he could really act when the role was right. Already picked for Doc Holliday here, he's picked again for what I feel is the better performance. I'm a big doors fan, so I've seen a lot of video of Jim, and Kilmer nails it in every aspect - the way he walked, talked, moved, and even sang. Even the surviving members of The Doors said it was uncanny.

14.9 Matewan - shootout

The whole movie is just a build to this shootout, which actually happened in West Virginia in the 1920s. Love this movie, and you can't get more realistic than this.

14.8 - The Full Monty - English Film

Yes, I know it has lots of man butt in it, but just deal. Okay?
Crud. Shoulda punted Lethal Weapon.

Something like this happens to me about two or three times per round ... I just don't always post a response. But, man, the sniping is nuts in this one.

COURTROOM SCENE JUDGING CRITERIA

Now this will be really fun.

- I don't expect everyone to be boning up on the Federal Rules of Evidence here and it's not like I've argued in front of the SCOTUS 20 times or even once. :) However, scenes that are somewhat grounded in realism (from the perspective of anyone who's ever been in a courtroom, which I figure most people have in one form or another, even just to argue a traffic ticket) will score highly. Realism means (for example) that witnesses are not being cross-examined to (literal) death on the stand; the judge is not interjecting with jokes; counsel are not screaming long monologues at one another while the judge haplessly bangs a gavel; and no one is breaking into song, firing a weapon, etc., to interrupt the proceedings.

- However, dramatic license is still cool. Since it's already been selected, I can mention that there are a few things about Cruise's final interrogation of Nicholson in "A Few Good Men" that are not terribly realistic from a litigation standpoint, but nothing is over the top ridiculous or stupid in a "that would never happen" sort of sense.

- Top scores in the category will go to anyone who can find a scene that is tight, realistic, and well-written. For example, again using "A Few Good Men" as an example, one of the most clever courtroom sequences in that movie only lasts a few seconds and is a bit of a throwaway, but it's awesome because it could actually happen. This is when Cruise takes the Marine Corps manual right out of Bacon's hand after direct and cross-examines Noah Wyle by asking Wyle to show him, using the manual, where the mess hall at Gitmo is located. I've actually seen something like that happen, just as fast and unscripted, and it was frigging brilliant. Anyway, anyone who actually breaks down a courtroom scene and unearths some gem like that will score really high marks, but honestly, just saying the name of the movie and linking the specific scene is fine too. ("A Few Good Men" will score highly unless some people really step up to the plate and knock it down.)

- The entire movie does not have to take place in a courtroom or revolve around the courtroom proceedings, but if the courtroom scene(s) is/are not the central focus of the movie, there could be trouble unless the courtroom scene is well done.

- Finally, reference to TV Land might help, and it won't offer any spoilers. "L.A. Law" had fantastic courtroom scenes on a regular basis. "Law & Order" featured mostly very good courtroom scenes. "The Good Wife" (yeah, I'm forced to watch it) has, for the most part, atrocious courtroom scenes. Just throwing that out there.

PM me with questions or bribes.

14.11 Lina Leandersson, Let the Right One In -- Child Actor

This is a little tough because there doesn't seem to be much of the film cut online. If I can't find anything better than this, which is two of her early scenes in the film, I'll cut something myself later.

I considered Let the Right One In as romantic gesture, too, for the ending where Eli protects Oskar at the pool.

How many of us have experienced this so far in this draft? Got something in mind, but just can't find the clip.

And how about this one: you seem to recall a certain scene in a movie that will fit one of the categories really well. Then when you go to look for it, either (a) the scene was a lot more "meh" than you remember, or else (b) you can't find the scene at all and you wonder if you're mind's playing tricks on you.
Yes, I get both a and b a lot. In fact, I was doubting if there was a scene, however brief, where lights along the ocean's surface were in fact seen charging ships in 20,000 Leagues.
I've been digging around hard for a scene since the begiinning of the draft, and I finally found it. Found it, that is, in an online copy of the screenplay.

I'm going to take it. It's a touching scene IMHO. It belongs in this draft. But I will not be able to link to video.

Tim, please move Cool Hand Luke-50 Eggs to Gambling Scene.

This next one is for all you ladies out there...

14.12 Eastern Promises - Bathhouse Fight - Fight Scene

I don't think I can link to this one because of the presence of Viggo's crotch dongle, but it's there on You Tube if you search for "Eastern Promises Bath Fight" for anyone that doesn't know it. It's a brutal scene and a classic fight.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I believe KP is on autoskip today (at least per Acer's post above)...

When the judge for this category first opened up the criteria somewhat, this is one of the first scenes that came to mind for me, not necessarily because I think it’s a great movie; but, because the imagery from many of the scenes are disturbing and evocative of what it must be like to enter a killer’s psyche – and these scenes (or this in particular) are key to the film’s plot.

14.17 –

scene from ‘The Cell’, Dream sequence.Child psychologist Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) is an expert in an experimental treatment for coma patients: a virtual reality device that allows her to enter into the minds of her patients and attempt to coax them into consciousness. When serial killer Carl Rudolph Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio) falls into a coma before the FBI can locate his final victim, Agent Novak (Vince Vaughn) persuades Deane to enter Stargher's mind and discover the victim's location.

You're thinking of a different movie.

14.22 - Napoleon Dynamite - Dance Scene

I'm sure most in this draft who saw this movie thought it was terrible, but I found it very funny and thought the dance scene made for a brilliant climax to the film.

14.23 - Melancholia - No idea

To the tunes of Tristan & Isolde...People are sad. Kirsten Dunst gets naked. The earth is destroyed. The latter two events are not half bad. The last feels like a mercy killing by the time it happens.

Why? Nobody knows.

The Earth distruction stuff is pretty cool.

I was considering this for one of my last two picks - thought it may slide. I had a backup plan (which I think I prefer anyway) for the category which hopefully I can use.
