timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (3 Viewers)

6 yellow smiley faces- Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure

This gets the nod over Billy Madison because I like it better. This was actually my favorite movie when I was growing up. But I did make criteria for the category and one of those was for it to be realistic. This is not realistic so it took a major hit. Would have been great to sit in the crowd for their presentation though. San Dimas High School Football Rulez

7 yellow smiley faces- Mask

The first time I heard about this movie, I thought it was a live adaptation of the cartoon. I was wrong.I feel bad for the kid who cant fix his face. This scene has him describing beautiful people and you can see that the students feel bad for him. It was an OK scene but I found it a little boring to be honest. He tries to present in a clever “cool” way but I was not feeling it. The stupid kid should have felt great about Masks rate of $3. I charge $65 an hour to tutor.

9 yellow smiley faces- Legally Blonde

8 yellow smiley faces- Paper Chase

I grouped these two movies together because they have similar circumstances. Both take place in a first year law school classroom. They both also have teachers who belittle their students. I have never been in a law class and maybe this is how its done. But I just dont get that way of teaching or the tactic. There are plenty of ways to show someone that they might be wrong and not embarrass them in front of a classroom of their peers. Blonde got the nod because Witherspoon and Blair are hot

10 yellow smiley faces- Top Gun

Maverick shows how arrogant he is by telling everyone that his name will grace the plaque on the wall. Yet the whole time he keeps looking at iceman like he is a schoolgirl getting ready to offer himself to iceman. Maybe he knew what Kelly McGillis would look like in 20 years and wanted no part of that. Maybe he wasnt acting much and wanted to bone the iceman. Who knows. Skerritt does an OK job of making me believe he was ever a top gun.

11 yellow smiley faces- Finding Forrester

I have to admit that this was one of the tougher scenes for me to rank. Without seeing the movie, it looks like Jamal is up on charges of doing something wrong. It seems like most of the people know he should be cleared but the headmaster is intent on breaking him. Sean Connery comes to his defense. The acting in the scene is great even if I am not 100% sure what the crime was. I think I found a good spot for it at 11.

12 yellow smiley faces- Election

Let me preface this by saying there have not been many kids that I didnt like throughout my 14 years of teaching. However, there are a few that stand out. While I personally would never do anything vindictive to them, lets just say [chrisrock] but I understand [/chrisrock]. I would imagine I would hate teaching Reese Witherspoons character and could see why the teacher would not want her to win the election. Im not sure any teacher would throw out the ballots, but you never know

13 yellow smiley faces- Freedom Writers

The nice part about the scene is the connection the student forms with the speaker. It starts when he escorts her to the front of the class and ends with him calling her his hero. She declines of course and is too modest but you can tell that what she had to say had and made an impact on all the students but him in particular. As a teacher, you only hope that the students are quiet when a guest speaker talks. It seems like all of the kids respected the speaker and were impacted.

1 yellow smiley face- Meaning of Life

While this scene is funny, I did make my criteria to be realistic. I dont care what country you are in, this is not happening in class (I didnt look this up and am only making a blind assumption). I tried to move it up a bit because I did like it but I could not justify any ranking higher.
I guess I missed where the criteria was spelled out.
In his criteria, he only gave realism 20%. I think that's a reasonable percentage on paper, but he seems to be giving it a much higher percentage here. Obviously The Meaning of Life scene is an absurdity, but it's also wickedly funny and a sharp commentary on how students are easily bored no matter what the subject matter. It doesn't deserve the low ranking it got here, IMO.

14 yellow smiley faces- Superbad

This is my pick. I was the kid in home ec for 2 periods in a row my senior year. And Julez is pretty hot

15 yellow smiley faces- Back to School

Classic Kinnison in this scene where Rodney wants to hang with his kid so he goes back to school.

16 yellow smiley faces- 21

I have to admit, no matter how many times I see this scene, or even go into the thread that is dedicated to the problem, I just dont get it. I am the first to say that I am awful with math concepts. I did well in Calculus somehow but failed Calculus for business majors when I was in school. But that is not what is up for discussion here. The thing I like about the scene is that the teacher allows the student who answered correctly to feel confident. There are a couple of examples that we have seen already that denigrate the student instead of picking them up.

*** Dont try to explain it to me. I wont ever get it :bag:

17 yellow smiley faces- Good Morning Vietnam

Nice to see Vietnamese people learning the intricacies of the English language. Seems realistic and Williams seems to be having a good time with it. The students were engaged and having fun and as a teacher, you cant ask for anything more

18 yellow smiley faces- Stand and Deliver

I think the insults go a little over the top, but I have never taught a class of Mexican Americans. Maybe this is par for the course and socially acceptable. Good scene where the teacher tries to get the students to understand Math concepts. The girl at the end redeems him.

19 Yellow Smiley faces- Precious

Shows the emotional side of being a teacher and dealing with students who have issues. I thought it was a nice job by the teacher to see what was going on and not get upset with the curing. Too many teachers would have sent her to the office for being insubordinate. I dont see many students like Precious where I teach. My wife does. Sometimes it is sad what our students have to go through. Nice job by the teacher to try and be supportive.

10 yellow smiley faces- Top Gun

Maverick shows how arrogant he is by telling everyone that his name will grace the plaque on the wall. Yet the whole time he keeps looking at iceman like he is a schoolgirl getting ready to offer himself to iceman.

20 yellow smiley faces- A Beautiful Mind

There is not much to this scene besides its simplicity. Brilliant teacher walks in and cant figure out how to keep it cool in class while construction is going on. Beautiful student asks construction guys to quit for an hour. Mission Accomplished. There is more than one way to skin a cat as they say. Probably got an additional bump because Connolly is hot.

21 yellow smiley faces- Mr. Hollands Opus

In an example of a teacher not willing to give up on the student, Mr. Holland teaches a girl who lacks confidence in herself. Its not the fact that she can not play the clarinet, she puts so much pressure on herself because of her siblings. I can not tell you how many kids fall into this trap. Mr. Holland works patiently and allows her to realize that she is just as good as them. She truly shines in the concert and we chalk one up for the good guys.

22 yellow smiley faces- School of Rock

If we can separate the fact that the concept of the movie is ridiculous, the scene itself rocks (no pun intended). Constructivists believe that teachers should give their students the keys to learning and not build everything for them. What is more constructivist then having your students teach you the music that they wrote which you inspired in them. Zach creates the anthem for the school of rock and "Ned" runs with it and gives the kids a feeling that they are doing something. A true example of the teacher being the facilitator and the students teaching the class.

23 yellow smiley faces- Dead Poets Society

OK, so this one was a little over the top in terms of what I might do in my classroom, but that is not to say there arent teachers out there who are like this. While the antics may have been a bit untraditional, the result and feeling you get when your student finally "gets" it was not. I have had that feeling before and it really cant be beat.

24 yellow smiley faces- Kindergarten Cop

Who doesnt remember this scene. “Its not a toomah” may be one of the most famous movie lines of the 90s. The movie is meh in terms of Arnold movies but this scene stands out as a gem of a classroom scene. I have a 5, about to be 6 year old daughter so the source hits close to home. I have been in her classroom to help 3 times this year and I swear, they could have picked the kids in her class to be the actors. There is no doubt, this is how her class would have behaved if there was an undercover cop asking them questions.

25 yellow smiley faces- Entre Les Murs

I have never seen or heard of this movie before this draft. It could be good, it could suck. But this scene is the top classroom scene in this draft. It has everything a classroom would have. What appears to be a know it all teacher, a student who by all appearances looks like a unpopular less desirable type and an argument between the two. It culminates in the teacher getting :owned: by the student.

I have never called any of my students names but I can see it happening at the HS level. The fact that she gave such a great synopsis of the book while the teacher just smirks is :money: and has me believing that this is a real school and a real class. Awesome job on the pick, and I may seek this out to watch the whole thing in its entirety.

While this scene is funny, I did make my criteria to be realistic. I dont care what country you are in, this is not happening in class (I didnt look this up and am only making a blind assumption). I tried to move it up a bit because I did like it but I could not justify any ranking higher.

come on, the teacher was having sex in a classroom

OK, remove 20% of the grade. That gives you 80% to work with- it's still a brilliant scene, much better IMO than a lot of the stuff ranked above it.

Are you telling me that this wouldn't/isn't going to happen (in some cases is already happening) sometime in an Ivy League Sex Week classroom?

maybe. I dont know. I wasnt fotunate enough to go to an Ivy League school.

Andy has taken a few nicks on his early round selections. I would have to agree that Meaning of Life as the one pointer is an error, but nice job otherwise Acer.

No issue with The Paper Chase's placement...But yes, that is a very close approximation of what happens in many law school classes...Law classes are, for the most part, taught by lawyers, not teachers...And lawyers, by and large, are egotistical #######s

I was looking for The Paper Chase scenes earlier on, and did find the upchuck scene. However, I seem to vaguely remember that there are better, more compelling classroom scenes in the movie. But I hadn't seen the movie in a good 25 years, and the memory is hazy. I couldn't find anything better from this film on YouTube.

2 yellow smiley faces- Red Dawn

The teacher seems boring and most of the kids were unengaged. Until the 5th Russian Battalion lands outside their classroom. Didnt seem too realistic and the scene wasnt that great. Bored kids who start running away when shots are fired
Let's see. A 2 pointer and a 4 pointer. What a start!!!!!!!

If he has several movies that are within the same tier, he has to use something to break that tie. Using the realism criteria and his feelings on the scene to break that tie seems logical to me. I don't see the problem with where he has it ranked. Something had to get the lowest point, and he put a lot of thought into how to rank them.

4 yellow smiley faces- North Country

This scene made me uncomfortable.
Nailed it!

We're going to hear this from a lot of judges. Awkward was pretty much the defining aspect of our picks.

Nice job, 'wood.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

am watching all of the car chases (I found links to mad mad mad mad world and one or two others that were missing - some were buried in "car chase compilations".)

Should have rankings in another day or two.

This scene made me uncomfortable. I was trying to find out if this was a true story because I could not really believe this was realistic. It appears that it was true and that the boyfriend really ran away while his girlfriend was being raped. Who does that? I hope that guy has the worst life ever. Not worse than the raper, but pretty bad. This was not really what I was looking for in terms of classroom scene and while the scene was well acted and haunting, I had to leave it in the bottom tier
Did you pop an uncomfortable boner while watching the scene? Be honest

Yeah, my link the to Italian Job (original flavor) car chase was weak but I had a lot of trouble finding the scene I was looking for (from the end of the movie). Hopefully you found a better link or you can just hit with me with a low score for lameitude.

well, I hate to say this, but what I did find for that film wasn't all that impressive. I have not seen the 1969 version, so that's really all I can go on.

Reputation will keep it off the bottom, of course. But the fairly lame cars won't help either :)

Is it the mini coopers in the mall scene?

ETA - I just did the bottom 5 - you're not there :) (the scene I'm mentioning above is somewhat fun, even if the cars are topping out at 35mph)

Glad to hear about the bottom five! :)

No, see, I blew this pick. The scene I'm talking about is at the end of the movie. There's a really, really good car chase in the Alps around Turin, which culminates in them dumping the Minis one by one off a cliff, and then the robbers' trailer gets stuck on a cliff (same say this is the original "cliffhanger," although I don't think that's right). The whole sequence is fantastic. What I screwed up was making the pick, in a hurry, and then discovering that the clip I wanted wasn't available anywhere. The Minis in the mall scene is okay, but is NOTHING compared to the end sequence, which is generally what makes people include the flick on their "top car chases" list. But I can't expect you to have seen it, and I can't link it, so woe is me. ;)

After 2 cats, we're ranked T13th.
