timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (3 Viewers)

3 yellow smiley faces- Never Let me Go

This whole thing seemed odd from the second it started. I was asking myself why would a teacher be telling students they would never become anything. Add to that the fact that the kids and their reactions kind of freaked me out and I had zero clue what this was all about. After researching a little more and seeing what the person who chose it wrote, it made more sense. Unfortunately, I still couldnt really move it up any more so it lands here.
This is fair. I went in fully knowing that "realisticness" was part of your criteria and took it anyway. It's a great scene - the premise of the movie was all of those kids were learning (for the first time from a "rogue" teacher) that they were clones that would only survive long enough to be harvested for organs.

While that seems to be a very sci-fi premise the movie actually strives to be realistic in that context.

Great job overall.

So with some of these WTF movies, are they actually available anywhere or am I going to have to watch them online. I ask b/c our internet and computer is crap and that could be a problem. I am barely able to watch these 4 min youtube clips for my other categories.

Looking at stuff like: Even Dwarves, El Topo, Head, Asparagus, etc..

Pains me to have anything Kubrick low on a list. The drafter mentioned it might get a lower slotting. Fantastic looking shot (as always with Kubrick) and the iconic scene bumped it up a couple notches, but when I factored in the simple movement and the fact that nobody is actually doing anything I couldn't put it any higher. I am sure that didn't stop them from doing 75+ takes of the shot.

7 pts - Elephant

Very uncomfortable movie to watch, but still worth it. The whole movie is filled with long takes like this one as we follow several different kids as they go about their business on the day of a Columbine-like tragedy. Here we have the very tense final shot as the shooters stalk the school. This is one that has huge spoilers, so if you had any interest in watching the movie, I wouldn't click on the link.

Koyaanisqatsi is available on Netflix and Amazon streaming. It is worth the watch, particularly if you like a little smokey smokey.

There is a

of the whole film on youtube. That is not the way to watch it (it destroys the Glass score) but it will give you a sense of the WTF factor.

8 pts - Rope

This is the movie I was dreading having to rank. Brilliant concept here and Hitchcock was one of the first to start pushing the boundaries of the long takes. As the drafter stated these aren't complicated shots, but the fact that Hitchcock attempted to make a movie in 10 shots is amazing. He was hamstringed by the technology and having to use film. I have no doubt if he had access to the digital cameras this would be a movie filmed in one take.

9 pts -

Another **SPOILER** alert for anybody who hasn't scene the movie since this is the last of the film. Great shot of Jack in the hotel room, breaking through the gate to pan around what is going on in the street, back to the hotel room. Would love to see a pic or drawing of how the fence was set up to give the feeling of going through the gate - I assume it just slid apart somehow?

There is a

Yeah, I was wondering if I needed sign back up for netflix for a month to get my hands on a couple of the lesser known movies.

On a side note, I did think it was funny that although I only own about 150 dvds, it looks like 10 of them are on the WTF list.

Do you use NetFlix (or a similar service) to rent DVDs via mail? If so, my "WTF?" movie (What the #$*! Do We Know!?) is available according to this link.

Couldn't find it in RedBox's system, which is no surprise. If you've still got brick-&-mortar video rental places near you, you might find this film at a well-stocked one, especially a place that caters to science fiction fans. Or a place that specializes in trippy cult films.

KP, I have zero idea whether Asparagus could be available anywhere but I would doubt it.

Fortunately it is only a short movie (18-minutes) -- link here.

Appreciate it, but have ####ty satellite internet, so streaming won't work.

I work at a brick and mortar store, but we don't have it. Our library system has it though. What I will do tonight is post a list ones I cant get my hands on. Maybe one of you could check if Netflix has them and I can go from there.

Because it's such a crappy category, I think you can just say you watched them all and assign the rankings based on some completely arbitrary reason - like the quantity of the color yellow in their respective movie posters.

Crappy category? I am morbidly curious about what I am about to embark on here.

Here are the ones that I can't get through my collection, the store, or the library:

The Holy Mountain

Even Dwarves Started Small

El Topo

Koyanisqaatsi

Tetsuo (I might be able to get this transferred from another store)

Asparagus

I see a link to Asparagus above and that should work. so I might only be down to 4 that I have to track down.

I do kinda wish that there were criteria before about length of the movie. Kinda hard comparing a short that has 20mins of ####ed up crap to a movie that has 3 hours of ####ed up crap.

Not sure if it's on Netflix, but The Holy Mountain can be found on youtube here. Maybe the fact that it's split into twelve 10min clips there will help with your internet connection issues as well.

I guess this judge like a lot of camera movement with his long takes. When I was done and looking at my tiers what I noticed about this one is that the camera is basically situated on one plane for these set of scenes, and while they are great scenes, this is what kept them out of the top 10.

11 pts -

LOVE this scene, and it might have done a notch better in the fight scenes. This one missed out of the top 10 because the camera is following the action across the horizontal plane, and it is quite dark - easier to hide a mistake, etc.. Absolutely love the look on his face when the elevator opens up.

This first tier of the top 10 is a mishmash of iconic sweeping shot, underdog I had never seen before, and a lot of fighting. Maybe it should be the "foreign directors know how to film a long take" tier.

16pts -

I still haven't looked at who drafted what where, but I would assume this might be the value pick of the category. One of the few that I hadn't seen before in the category, and probably the one that I watched the most. Just wish there was subtitles so I knew WTF was going on. Just love the opening as the camera swoops into the game and drops in by the characters we are going to follow around the stadium.

.. and now for the best of the best. There are probably no surprises in the top 5:

21 pts -

Hate to be a richard, but please don't make an unpopular category even harder to get through. Of the 25 picks, I couldn't find links to scene for 9 of the selections (and mine was one of them). If they are not on youtube, could you at least narrow down a time frame of the movie so I don't have to guess what I am looking for. We probably have a couple weeks since I planned to start WTF first, but if my brain gets fried I will start shooting a movie scenes at the same time. I don't have links or time frames for:

Argo

Chaplin

Be Kind Rewind

Day for Night

Girl Next Door

CQ (maybe you provided a link, but can't search for a two letter term)

State and Main

Bowfinger

I am about 1/3 through my bottle of Jameson, so it's probably a good time to start on the WTF movies. :banned:

My plan for WTF movies is to rank them in 3 categories:

1. my confidence in being able to explain what the hell the movie is about (this will count X2)

2. Weirdness of the movie/weirdness of scenes in movie

3. quality of the movie/my desire to watch it again.

So the highest possible score would be 100 since the top scorer for #1 would be 50pts and 25 for each of the other two. The lowest score would be 4 pts. Ties will be dealt with somehow.

Wish me luck....

Lets try this again...

9.06 Portrayal of a Historic Person: Robert Downey Jr., Chaplin.

At least I think this is going to be the Historic Person category, it might be scene about making a movie. Downey really becomes Chaplin in this, almost spookily at times. Here's his first appearance as the Little Tramp.

Nice job on the rankings, KP. I thought these three all would have scored better - in particular, I thought The Passenger was a lock for a 20 pointer. But can't disagree to strongly with your rankings, there were some fantastic pics in this category.

Umm . . . I just got 22 points for "The Player" in the Long Take category, 10 points for "Raiders of the Lost Ark" 'cause it wasn't about Nazis (it was about the frenchman they call Belloshe), and 5 whopping points for "Billy Madison" in Classroom Scene. That's 37 points, Archimedes.

I'll decide how many points you get. Your numbers are correct, but I am penalizing you 22 points for complaining.

For Argo, I'm tal;king about the scene where John Goodman and Alan Arka's characters are supposed to be by the phone waiting to be an alibi for Ben Affleck's character. They decide to step out for a bit, and that's when the call comes in. As they are casually walking back to their office, they hear the phone from a distance. Only problem is that their office is located on a sound stage, and this exact moment, a scene is being shot and they can't get through until the take is shot. The shot is taking longer than they want it too, so Goodman basically says, "#### it" and they walk through the scene to get to the phone.

State and Main scene is the last scene of the movie, when they start shooting the fictional movie. The scene is not online, but it does appear to be on Amazon and Netflix.

When do you plan on ranking filming movie scenes. I have the girl next door and can upload it to YouTube for you if that works. But it has to wait til next week.

Sorry, I couldn't for the life of me find a link to the specific scene when I selected it—will look into it after work tonight/this weekend. Will that work for you?

I doubt I would get to that category for week or so.I work a bit this weekend, but plan on tackling the wtf movies first on my days off. Also, I think your movie is at the store, so all I would probably need from you is a timeframe to watch when I get the dvd.
