timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (1 Viewer)

Who are these harrowing judges that no one's heard from? We have 10 or so categories in the books. I have three remaining and they wiiiiiiil-be-ju-u-udged. /Maroon5 TU has two out and he's money. Tim has one, jwb has one, JML has one, charvik has checked in, and here's Krista trying to dump hers. So who are these nefarious characters?

tl; dr the judging will get done and all of us have lives.

Btw, tim, did you ever adjust the point totals for the Outer Space movies after I reranked Solaris? It's a matter of adding a few points to the selector of Solaris and subtracting a few other points for, IIRC, Last Starfighter, Outland, Starship Troopers and Sunshine. Don't rely on my recollection without checking.

:lmao:

We're in a Internet movie draft and some of us sad suckers are judging an internet movie draft.

If you genuinely had a life, you would not have even drafted, let alone volunteered to judge.

I think over a month, over 2 since the drafted started, is enough time to have at least started your judging.

If a judge hasn't even started theirs, they are not going to now.

They are the ones who need to admit

a) they are over their heads now and give it up or

b) Get their asses into gear and at least start and keep us updated on their progress.

Seriously, all other of these type of drafts had the judging well over halfway, if not two thirds or more of the way done by the same time.

BTW - The list of judges are in the OP.

shocking scene is coming along swimmingly. Have watched all movies, have links to scenes, and the bottom 10 are done. Now comes the hard part.

Sigh. Every time I pull up these romantic gestures to rank, I just can't get into it. My heart's not in it (ironically); remember I was drafted to do this and didn't volunteer. I'll do it just to avoid tim having to take it over, but if anyone else is interested, please feel free. Mrs. R, if you're done with your other judging, you'd be great since people seem to enjoy your judging (well, other than Mad S).
I guess I can give it a try, but I've only seen eleven of these movies. (I'd seen twenty-one of the dance movies.) I'm not exactly the Queen of Romance.

Consistent with prior update, my judging of Historical Portrayal will commence after Memorial Day, and complete prior to Father's Day.

Just checked to see if I watched more romantic movies than mrs.r., so I could maybe give it a try. Nope, only ten fort me...sorry. I am not that romantic anyway.

I'm not either, which is why I think I was nominated to judge it. I just counted--have seen 18 and think some were taken with me and my criteria in mind, so unless you've already done a lot of work on this, I should probably do it myself. Just won't have a bunch of fancy write-ups.

I need to do some work this morning but could post them later today, I think.

Shocking Scenes

Ok, let’s do shocking scenes.

These were really hard to do, because there is so much variety. Before I even start, here was my criteria:

Anything considered "shocking" is fine. Something we didn't see coming, something over-the-top revolting, something that made us jump out of our seats - all fair game. However, keep in mind that generally, a jaw-dropping "special effect" is not really what I am looking for. Also, trust that I know / respect film history - what was shocking way back when might not seem so shocking today, but I will try to keep it in context.

In other words, I let you pick what shocked you. And we got a little bit of everything – twists, revulsion, surprise reveals, jump scares, etc. It’s a mess of different types of shocks. In the end, it boiled down to how shocked I personally was, how it fit the film, how exasperated you (well, me) were when you saw it, etc.

However, in the end, “shocked” is a pretty strong word. So here's how they played out (do not expect JML-type commentary. I do a sentence or two, and that's that.)

Shocking Scenes - the bottom five

1 point

Arm amputation in 127 hours.

I went in to see a movie about a guy who cuts his arm off to survive. So when he actually cut his arm off, I wasn’t all that shocked.

2 points

Fallen

A typical “it’s not over yet” end to a horror film. Now, we’ll see some of these later, but they made you jump out of your seat. This really didn’t.

3 points

From Dusk Till Dawn

Was anyone really shocked that the brothel was full of vampires? A reveal like this might have worked better 30 years earlier, but in this case, it just felt like part of the movie and not some big shock. Fun movie, though.

4 points

The Departed

Is anyone shocked that someone got shot in a mafia movie? Yes, it was surprising that he died like that, but “shocking?” Nah. I would have been shocked had this happened halfway through the film.

5 Points

Animal Kingdom

First viewing of this. Really good movie, but I wasn’t overly shocked at that ending. Thanks for the pick, though - I enjoyed it.

Shocking Scenes - 6-10

6 points

Chinatown

It’s a decent enough little plot device / twist, but shocking? Not really.

7 points

Saw

I dunno…. I wasn’t so much “shocked” as I felt cheated. Him getting up after all that time? No fair.

8 points

Spoorloos

Another “first time seeing it” film. Really liked it until the end. By the time we get to the end, nothing is going to be really “shocking”, as the only question left is “how?” (and we know it’s not going to be nice.) Plus, the viewer is still a little angry at Rex for drinking the sleeping potion in the first place. Still, it’s a disturbing little film, and I’m glad I watched it (although I'm happy B&N was out of the Criterion dvd, forcing me to do the amazon rental thing.) The better-scored Audition does the same basic "dread horror" better.

9 points

Irreversible

This falls into the “shocking because it’s hard to watch”, which there are a few of in this draft. And not to downplay rape or anything, but it’s just not an overly shocking scene in the context of this list.

10 Points

The Last Boy Scout

This scene was a little too over the top for me. Still, it’s definitely surprising. They don’t teach the .45 method of tackler avoidance in college, that’s for sure.

Shocking Scene 11-15

Ok, now these get a little tough.

11 Points

Seven

Really like the movie, but in a film about bizarre, psychopathic, cat and mouse killings, one more doesn’t overly shock me (not past 11 points here, anyway.)

12 Points

Audition

I’ve always said I would like to show this to a theater full of nice, upstanding middle class soccer moms and dads, and then just watch their expressions as they left. Holy @#$% is this sick.

13 Points

The hobbling scene from Misery

It’s fitting to put this and Audition close together. I give this one the extra point more due to mainstream knowledge/appeal. It’s a pretty brutal scene, and one that’s remembered.

14 Points

Ending of The Mist

This isn’t so much shocking in making you jump as it is leaving you with a sick, sick feeling. Oh, that poor guy…

15 Points

Friday the 13th (my pick)

Despite a billion sequels, Jason’s first appearance is really memorable, and one nobody saw coming. If you saw it in the theater back in 1980, you know you jumped.

Shocking Scene - 16-20

Now it's getting really hard. No way to do these without making somebody mad, because any one of these could realistically expect a top 5 finish. Top 10 is your consolation.

16 Points

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

A great pick, and one I wasn’t expecting. It fits well here back to back with Friday the 13th – it gets the one point nod over Jason because this one is just a little bit scarier.

17 Points

The Usual Suspects

Personally, I just wasn’t all that shocked here. We prettymuch knew someone wasn’t what they seemed. It was just a matter of who. Really good movie, though, and its ending is fairly legendary in film circles, so we gotta give it some love.

18 points

Planet of the Apes

Yes, it’s cheesy if you watch it now. But it was definitely a classic “oh my goooood…” reveal. One of the most iconic endings in movie history.

19 Points

Ending to the crying game

At the time this was shocking. In this day and age, “It’s always sunny…” is making quasi-jokes about this. Still, its place in film history is secure, and it earns a solid 19 points here.

20 Points

Crucifix scene from the exorcist

Yea, it was pretty shocking to see. This was my first real horror movie, at the tender age of 7 (I had cool parents.) Wow…

Shocking Scenes - the best of the best

21 Points

Godfather Horse Head

Probably one of the better known scenes in film history, its place in “shock” lore is secure. But it’s always bugged me how they got the head in there without waking him up first…

22 Points

Squeal like a pig

Yea, this movie went there… and it was pretty darn shocking that it did.

23 Points

Million Dollar baby

Nobody saw this coming. Clint could have just made her lose, made her get hurt just enough not to fight anymore, any number of things, and still have a great story. Instead, he has her suffer an improbably accident, leading to the worst possible fate. This started out around 16 points, and just kept climbing. It’s a great twist, and a fine pick.

24 Points

Fight Club

They got me. Brilliantly, I might add.

25 Points

Psycho

No surprise here – the shower scene is an all-time classic. Nobody saw this coming – in fact, killing off your star 30-minutes in like this was just about unheard of at the time. Great stuff.

Psycho

This scene helped make Hitchcock a very wealthy man. He wanted Paramount to fund the movie, and they refused saying it was too violent and sexual (especially the shower scene), which for that time period was different than anything ever done. Hitchcock decided to finance the film himself, and Paramount said they would distribute it. Hitchcock wanted a big chunk of ownership of the film, and Paramount agreed, and stuck by their opinion that it wouldn't be successful. It was a huge hit. For me, the most shocking part of the movie was finding out that Norman was pretending to be his mother, but that could be considered a twist too. Anyway, the shower scene also is the very first slasher scene in cinema. I have nothing to do with this draft pick...I'm just running my mouth .

The Norman / Mother reveal at the end would have scored top 5 as well.

Brilliant film.

I absolutely love the final shot of the film, with Mother looking up at us from Norman's eyes. If there was ever a look of a deranged individual on film, that's it right there. That one stare at the camera should have been worth an Oscar nod.

I can live with your rankings except for this.

I hate this movie six ways from Sunday. It's the worst Best Picture of all time.

It's gratuitous treatment of its characters in service of its sledgehammer pointmaking is unforgivable and Clint should still be ashamed of himself.

Accurate update would be nice. Any update to the standings would be nice. Is the scorekeeper on holiday with the rest of the judges?

I'll say Crash was worse than both of those. By a good margin.

Crash was horrible. Absolutely horrible.

I dunno - I liked MDB.

Honestly ... this far post-draft: As much fun as fancy write-ups can be to read, the thought of having to prepare them can cause the entire exercise to slide off the edge of an already full plate. Speaking from experience.

"Barely-explained rankings" decisively trumps "no rankings at all" IMHO.

I dunno - I liked MDB.
It's okay that you did. Obviously you're not alone.

I just thought it relied too much on situations that would never happen (how she was paralyzed in the first place) and caricatures for characters (fat mama) and an ending stolen from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

That's the other thing. I think it's telegraphed for a good 20 minutes.

Yeah. I didn't finish my rant until later. I didn't think the scene was the least bit shocking.

Before this goes off the rails, I want to be clear - I'm glad jwb took the time to do rankings and I'm not making a fuss.

I just have an irrational disliking for that movie.

Oh, I definitely thought it was shocking. I figured she'd lose at worst - when she got hit from behind, you think "ok, that bites"... but breaking her neck / becoming a quad? No, didn't see that coming at all.

Agree with the OFOTCN ending. But I wasn't judging that (and it's not that horrible. Any mercy kill, pillow or not, is stealing from Cuckoo's Nest.)

Oh, I totally get that - I know you aren't making a stink - just a point on the movie. Good discussion.

Um, the shocking scene selected in "Fallen" wasn't the ending, fake or otherwise. It was a scene far earlier in the film. Did you watch the link provided or read my writeup? If you hated the film or didn't find the scene I actually selected shocking, I'd say nothing; I never do. But I think getting the right scene is worthy of mention. Maybe my link was incorrect? And weren't you the Solaris picker? Irony. Ah, well, all good. :lmao:

:goodposting:Accurate update would be nice. Any update to the standings would be nice. Is the scorekeeper on holiday with the rest of the judges? :bag:
Ah, well. I just got tubed for a scene I didn't select, so it's all good. I guess I'll rush my rankings out and not really put a lot of work into them. Too bad; this draft was fun but has sorta gone off the rails.

Shocking Scenes - the bottom five

1 point

Arm amputation in 127 hours.

I went in to see a movie about a guy who cuts his arm off to survive. So when he actually cut his arm off, I wasnt all that shocked.

2 points

Fallen

A typical its not over yet end to a horror film. Now, well see some of these later, but they made you jump out of your seat. This really didnt.

Yes, it was surprising that he died like that, but shocking? Nah. I would have been shocked had this happened halfway through the film.

5 Points

Animal Kingdom

First viewing of this. Really good movie, but I wasnt overly shocked at that ending. Thanks for the pick, though - I enjoyed it.
Yea, I was the Solaris picker. Didn't even register, though (c'mon...)

The link I searched for/used was correct - that's is indeed the scene I judged. My fault in my brief write up calling that the ending (I have seen it, but it's been years - my mistake. In fact, I can't explain why I thought that was the end. Maybe one of the youtube comments called it that and it just stuck.)

But it doesn't change the rank - in the context of the film, the fallen angel screwing with him is not really "shocking" by any stretch (it's darn creepy, though - I'll give it that. Although I kind of wish the "touch" thing wasn't present - it makes it a little silly.)

I spent hours on this, ok?

My bad in the writeup calling it the end, but that was the right scene.

Ah, I owe you an apology then and retract my whining. Sorry. :) I was just enjoying leading K4 and other filmies and found it endlessly amusing. But this was a reach pick of a personal fave late in the draft and I have no issues with the ranking now that I know you watched the selected scene. My bad, man.

I am sincerely sorry. That remark about the draft being derailed wasn't directed at you so much as at tim disappearing and not reranking Solaris after I spent two hours with that writeup, JML being JML  , etc. Now that I know you watched the right scene, I hew to my policy of never complaining about a ranking, I am very sorry, and it is clear that you did put a lot of thought into your rankings, which incidentally I thought were pretty spot on. My total bad. :multiplebag:

It's all good, man. I understand. I really, really have moved beyond being touchy at "ranking whining", because usually they are just that - whining.

You did have a valid point - I could see where you felt "wait a minute, that wasn't what I selected". Your picked scene is indeed the scene judged - when I judged these, I searched the thread for every movie's "pick post" and cut/pasted the drafter's link. Most of the movies I have seen (including fallen, which I do like) and didn't really need to re-watch. Some I had to watch (I saw animal kingdom and spoorloos for the first time each because of this). I do think I must have seen a comment that said that was the end (or just had "the ending" stuck in my mind, because many of these were movie endings)
