timschochet’s political thoughts and commentary- back in here until the election is done (4 Viewers)

So I had a long political discussion with my father in law yesterday, a staunch conservative, an honest, decent guy and a firm Trump supporter. Here’s what he told me:

1. Trump made no big errors during the pandemic. He’s tried his best; the governors wouldn’t let him do everything he could. He’s not to be blamed; he’s saved lives.
2. Trump is the best President we’ve had since Ronald Reagan and in terms of economic policy, better than Reagan:

3. Trump is no racist. African-Americans love Trump and the election will reveal this.
4. The Atlantic story was a complete lie,

5. Trump will be re-elected easily; the media will be shocked by how many folks who refuse to talk to pollsters are actually for Trump. My FIL knows personally many Democrats, all of whom were Hillary supporters,  who now adore Trump and plan to vote for him.
6. Joe Biden is a false cover for the radicals like AOC who run the Democratic Party. Their plan is to bring Soviet style socialism to the United States.

There was more but you get the gist. I felt like we were living on two different planets.

Sounds pretty like my aged in-laws. My FIL is voting for Pence and not Trump. He keeps warning Mrs. O about how if Biden wins, he's gonna spread California's socialist nightmare across the country.

At the campaign rally in Michigan last night, they played “Fortunate Son” by Creedence. Oh the irony. Did any of the campaign staff bother to listen to the lyrics?

Trump said something at his presser yesterday that was pretty revealing, don’t know if anyone else caught this. He said “so I watch Hannity, and Laura, and Tucker, and Fox and Friends, and Lou Dobbs, and the Fox Business Channel”-

So I’m thinking, how much ####### “executive time” does this guy have anyhow? Everything I’ve ever read about the Presidency suggests it’s supposed to be a 24/7 job; there’s rarely enough time for sleep much less any leisure at all. But I  guess it’s different with this guy.

Your fil has his finger on the pulse.

Assuming your FIL is speaking figuratively, meaning his vote cast is a statement about his support for Pence, as I don't believe there is any way to literally vote for Pence and not Trump on a ballot

You mean the pulse of old wealthy white conservatives who live in the nicer parts of Los Angeles and Orange Counties? You’re right I’m sure.
Aren't  u that?  Wealthy and white.   (I know you are non practicing jew)

Can we make comments about Tim's political thoughts?

(Just making a joke please no banhammer)
You're gonna need to be careful about the jokes. I got the axe recently for saying something as a joke,  and included a "this is tongue in cheek" disclaimer in the post. Mods are too busy to deal with the PSF nonsense now. It's football season baby!

Your father in law was 100% correct in everything he said.  I am more confident than ever that Trump will win big in November which will awesome for our country.
My father in law is an extremely decent man, one of the best men I have ever known. I’m sure you’re a decent guy too. But honestly I have trouble reconciling this way of thinking.

Not the “win big” part- that’s a matter of predicting a political outcome and no moral judgment applies to it.
But the other points- the facts contradict them.

So these decent guys - they just don't think the stuff Trump does is racist? Or they are willing to accept it for, S.Ct judges, for example?

@whoknew...I honestly don’t know.

My FIL does not believe that Trump is a racist. But for him not to believe that, he has to willfully either ignore or disbelieve a lot of evidence that should be clear to everyone paying attention.

This is the most difficult issue I have with Trump supporters. Like you, I know some Trump supporters that I really like as people. They are really close friends. That I like a lot.

And yet, they are willing to support an openly racist dude running an openly racist campaign. Its an issue I really struggle with and have not been able to resolve.

I am black and I support Trump.  He is not a racist and I challenge you to give me a quote where he is openly racist.
Well let’s start with the whole Birther movement. Do you truly believe he would have pushed that as hard as he did had Obama been white?

Cuba has a far lower infant mortality rate than the US. Can we want that but not want to be a communist country?
Cuba government gives doctors doctors targets to meet for infant mortality, so doctors will reclassify deaths as late fetal deaths.  Instead of being 4.3 deaths per 1000 (US is 5.7) it is estimated Cuba's infant mortality rate may actually be over 11 deaths per 1000.   This fairytale of Cuba's great health care is an often repeated lie.  Sure they do have world class health offerings to rich foreigners who pay for it and important members of the communist party, but what is provided to the masses is utter crap.

Did your FIL give credit to Clinton for economic growth and a budget surplus, overlooking his personal indiscretions? And credit to Obama for creating a huge number of jobs? And criticize Trump for creating an even larger deficit, benefitting primarily corporations and the top 1%, and the impact of that on his grandchildren and social security, like a true fiscal conservative?

Did you read that.   It even says that the birther question the 2008 presidential election.   But Hillary is the one who first brought it up in the election.

Hilarious
I did read it. You claimed that Hillary started the Birther movement. That is clearly false. Period.

The question of Obama's citizenship was first raised in 2004, long before the 2008 election.  But Hillary supporters did widely spread the rumors, so it is funny it is now considered racist.

Your FIL needs to understand that Pence , although loyal is not the heir to the MAGA throne

Yeah. He won’t ever concede that. He’s worried about being taxed out of existence and all the crime Biden will be responsible for (I know..I know). At least he hasn’t said anything Q related which is quite surprising imo. I don’t really talk to him at all these days for a lot of reasons, but no way I am ever directly discussing politics with him.

Vox is not a reliable  news source.   So according  to some.   Its all bs.
In this instance, Vox serves not as a news source but as a collector of news from other sources.
1. Specifically, which of the stories collected here do you find not to be credible, and why?
2. Specifically, which of the stories interpreted here as racist do you find not actually to be racist and why?

Not really. It was racist of the Hillary supporters, it was racist of Trump. Where’s the humor?

The context of funny in this case clearly means funny as in odd, not funny as in humorous.  It is odd that in politics every time a republican makes an attack, racism is assumed while democrats get a free pass.  A politician running for a high office is going to have everything in their background scrutinized.  Obama having one parent who was a foreigner raises a potential constitutional issue as to his natural born citizen status should he have been born outside the United States.   That is part of running for office.  Obama intentionally drug this controversy out because he knew it would make his opponents look bad.  That is politics.

That's not entirely true as some of the links are to vox stories about his comments not just to his comments.

But regardless of that I am not a fan of source criticism as a means to avoid discussion.
