timschochet's thread- Mods, please move this thread to the Politics Subforum, thank you (1 Viewer)

While we're here, shame on all of you for ####ting on guys like eminence. We want more interesting people posting here. Even if you don't like em, let him do his thing and it might encourage someone else to post inane stories.
racism is "interesting" to you? or is it the rampant homophobia perhaps?

Is this an AMA type of thread or just where you post your ### off about what you want?
What is AMA?
Ask Me Anything
Oh. I suppose people can ask what they want, and I'll try to answer. But I'm not going to get too personal. I'm not interested in discussing my life story. Would prefer more interesting topics.
Just a suggestion. The NBA thread always has an update on the title letting folks know what the current discussion is about. You may want to do something similar. I believe it draws traffic to a thread.

Of course the board isn't as "fun" as it used to be. All the subjects and threads that you can possibly think of have been exhausted. Want to talk politics? Religion? Science? Pretty much anyone and everyone's opinions are known. If someone new comes to the board and tries to start a thread on a subject that's been done before, people will point him to the old thread, and no one will open it. (because it's old...people like new threads, if you start a new one you get everyone involved..an old one, few people will read)

It's kind of like a fantasy football league me and 9 close friends have had for a long time. When we first started, our message boards were full. We ranked people's hairdo's, had discussions about an endless number of topics, and enjoyed the banter.

Now ten years later....we make a few braggadocio posts about our fantasy teams and that's about it. We got older, the fun died, and any banter we do is done through text messages anyway.

So it doesn't surprise me that FBG isn't as fun as it used to be.

Part of the "glory" of what people remember is that it was still early in the message board experience for many people. Your first foray into something (like an online community) is always fun.

And more than many other message boards, which descend into unreadable trolling most of the time, this board stayed civil most of the time, which is why it's been a fun message board for the most part.
Agree. I think people should get in the habit of starting new threads, even if another thread had been opened up a couple of years ago. When I came back, the board was filled with threads that had 30+ pages and had been started years prior. It was very hard to jump into a thread like that. Who cares if the same thing was talked about 4 years ago?

Of all the news over the past few days, the one that bothered me the most was Russia raising their interest rates to by 6.5% in one day. I'm envisioning a situation much like Weimar Germany in the 1920s in which cash money became worthless. There are far worse possibilities than Putin.

Am I reacting too strongly here?
I don't think it gets as bad as 1920's Germany (or even close to it).

1920's Germany was brought on by war reparations and sanctions and to that point, they had tried almost anything other than raising interest rates. To me, it didn't matter what they did, Germany was tanking during that early 20's era.

Not really comparable. Having spent a good amount of time in Russia this year, I'm not sure how tuned in their general citizens are to what's going on in the world or that interest rates were even raised. They love Putin; they love Russia, they know things are expensive there and they pretty much just accept it as life. The ones I met that are working hard, are earning enough to keep up and enjoy life. It seemed to me, far easier to find a job in Russia than in the US from my overall impression. I think this has little impact in the grand scheme for most there.

eminence's stories about his life are fairly entertaining because he is such a schmuck. Eminence's forays into political debates are stupid and I wish they didn't exist. We're trying to have a nuanced and complicated debate about racial issues and along come Eminence and Grandpa Rox and in a few sentences send the level of discussion back into something much more basic and far less interesting IMO.

Tim

Do you listen to any podcasts? Which ones?
no not really. Sometimes I listen to talk radio but I can only tolerate it for minutes at a time.
I think you'd like some of the history related ones quite a bit. I'll give you the names of a few if you're interested.

Good way to kill time while stuck in horrendous SoCal traffic.

I've just gotten into books on tape (well, audible.com) - living in the 5th largest city in the US comes with it's own traffic problems and having a book to read (listen to) to pass the useless time has been a major improvement in my life. It also gives me incentive to walk more, walk longer, and move around more. I don't mind the 60 minute walks with the dog as much when I'm listening to cool a story.

Awesome - it's not just me then. Keep the thread apprised of what you're listening to and I'll follow to keep up.

I'm re-"reading" the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich right now. Probably my favorite history book ever, because it's factual, yet told like a novel.

Problem is, it's 58 hours long. I have a new book coming on the 24th and there's no way I'm going to finish in time. I'm one of those people that HAVE to have complete silence when reading. I can't passively read/listen. Any distractions, even a mindless phone video game and I won't hear a single word that's relayed.

Dear Tim,

Lately my body has been undergoing some "changes" and I feel kind of funny down there when Katelyn smiles at me in math class. It is embarrassing because my wiener gets really big and sometimes it doesn't go away before the bell rings and I have to get up to go to my next class. All the kids call me "boner" now. How can I make Katelyn stop being such a whore?

OK guys. I have decided, at least for the time being, to try out General Malaise's advice. I will change the title of this thread, and this will be the only thread I will post in. I will post on all sorts of topics that interest me, many of them serious though not all. I am hoping to get a lot of response and good discussion and debate. We'll see how it goes.

I won't promise this will be forever. A lot depends on whether on not something like this works and I honestly have no idea if it will. But we'll try it out for now.
Big mistake Tim and you will regret it. People who use a continual thread as a personal soapbox to discuss what specifically interests them is fine, but only draws people who want to take the time to go into the thread each day and see what is going on. The problem is that those type of threads are like walking into a middle of a conversation and then finding out the subject is something that is of no interest to you. I find it is not worth the effort to review two pages of a discussion that I wouldn't have clicked on in the first place if I had known the subject matter.

And you won't be happy seeing topics you want to discuss being vigorously debated elsewhere without you being a part of it (unless you assume the same people will duplicate their efforts and talk about those things here). Good luck, but I doubt this will work out for you.

I only listen to books I have already read. That is because my mind wanders while I'm driving or doing chores or whatever. And I don't mind missing words or even passages if Ive read it before. I am currently listening to Ken Follett's "Pillars of the Earth". After that will be the sequel "World Without End". Obviously I don't mind the long ones.

If people hadn't informed me that my opinions were stupid when I was 20, I'd still have stupid opinions.

Edit: Those stupid opinions.

I put you on ignore about a week ago (only bc it's a pain on my iPhone to scroll so much) but I just took you off and I'm looking forward to this.

Russia's way of life is close to how I envision it for North Korea, believe it or not. They are proud firstly and foremost of military accomplishments, irrespective of the stories behind them. I got to tour Peterhof in April, every room was dedicated to a militaristic feat. Every statue or painting seems to represent a victory in a war or battle. These folks are built born and raised on being the "strongest" country in the world - not the richest, not the smartest, not the happiest. The country more like any other to crush anyone else in battle.

They love Putin because it's all they know, he reps himself as a god in the country, not just the leader of the country. In fact, I've discussed the former prime ministers with many of their citizens while there and the only ones you get any dissenting opinions on, are ones that were weak militaristically. They love them some Russia.

The citizens would get along just fine. The governments never could. Russia is way too focused on being the strong bully, USA is focused on having a strong economy and taking care of its people. I side with US on this, obviously.

ETA: I believe Putin generally acts with what he feels is the best interest of his people.

And are called out for them, and don't threaten to kill themselves or sue Joe.

I like this... I'll share random feelings in here.

Last night I ate a pound of pastrami smoked lox for dinner with a side of spicy shrimp salad. My local fish store has this new thing called Washington Wild King Salmon Bacon Fish... OMFG it is Amazing!!

Tonight is date night with the wife, going to STK and collecting some blue and orange dots afterwards, someone is getting laid  by their wife :kicksrock:

Have you thought of starting fresh? New alias? I know it's probably not ideal. But people tend to not forget, and I doubt you will ever truly get a clean slate with some folks here.

As a lawyer, you should respect the right of people to threaten frivolous lawsuits.

Who threatened what now?

I forgot that eminence was banned. But look, the people who run this place don't want guys who make blatant racist comments. I can understand that.

I'm not defending anything he's done. And the whole suicide thing was beyond crazy. And I realize they get called out for them. Or even get timeouts. Just seemed odd that the little guy was banned.

Again, doesn't bother me. I don't care one way or another. I was just stating that he's not the only one to go on rants about racism or religious beliefs. That's all.

Iron Sheik, very few people here have ever been ACA's explicitly racist as Eminence. Some people imply it or hint at it, like Grandpa Rox or our late friend Clinton. There was Peens but nobody took him too seriously. Eminence was very clear about his thoughts, which is unusual.

Tim, I have question - long time ago you posted a link to a video with a sports reporter guy (real? actor?) doing a faux tv sports report featuring your fantasy football team. That was hilarious, how did you do that? Is it due to your incredibly powerful Hollywood connections?
