Titans 2015 in-season thread (1 Viewer)

Going to a Preds game with my 5yo son and my dad. Really pumped about it and I'm not even a hockey fan. No desire to do that at a Titans game. Something is wrong with that because I love football.
I'll agree with almost all of this (we're a little too far away to hit a preds game but we love going to hockey games). No desire to go to a Titans game right now but we'll watch when MM is playing.

Any expectations for the Saints game? Teams can come out fired up under a new interim coach, but I'm wondering if Mularkey has that effect. Main thing I will be looking for is a DGB breakout.

Any changes in gameplan philosophy expected with the coaching change?

I mentioned a page back, I'm worried of so much talk about their run game this week and the Saints jumping out to a lead.

Also, I'm not that worried to be down Bleeding and maybe also McCourty. I don't much care for them. I do however worry that any of the DBs can matchup well enough to deter Brees.

Last year and with Fish, sometimes they decided to not rush the passer and just almost be in prevent mode. I think Brees will slaughter them if they do it. LeBeau hasn't employed this so I'm gonna trust he's got this.

I'm less a fan of Douglas each week. MM seems to like him and Mularkey was a draw to him when he came from Atlanta so...oh I hope this isn't a Douglas week. He doesn't have anywhere near enough production to warrant his salary. He is fine moving the chains on occasion but he's not the #1 WR rely up on him type.

I'm very curious of Hunter and the coach that rode him being gone. I think he has a real real good chance to show a large uptick this week.

I have been not so patiently waiting for significant action where Hunter is opposite DGB, Walker is in and there's a back to buy MM a half second at least. I'm hoping this week I get my wish. I don't think most teams can match up well with those three. (Giant caveat to the WRs not taking themselves out of the play) Saints have ol Browner who is 6-4 to cover big WRs. If they're rolling (a big IF) fine let him cover one of them and the other can be covered by a 5-11 CB also I'm not sure them old legs can keep up with them for 4 Qs. Just totally filled with curiosity and hope that there will finally be two big fast athletic WRs opposite each other.

West was cut today and Webb was signed/activated from the PS so no Coffman dance this first week with the former TE coach.

I liked West last year.

He said some things that were in poor taste. Some of the Cleveland reports about his poor attitude were certainly concerning. In regards to football, I really think this kid can play. I don't recall poor effort poor work ethic type attitude complaints just a mouthy jackal that needs to shut it. I don't know about him as a teammate or how coachable he is but the personal attitude seems bad.

I guess it's attitude not fumbling. He had 171 carries and only two fumbles last year. Yeah 2 in 16 carries with the Titans stinks, but I would really strongly guess how he reacted to those fumbles and not playing was the real problem.

Quite frankly, I liked him better than Sankey in 2014 and the brief time they each played this season too.

The fluidity of the RB position in the NFL is at an all-time high, but I don't think this guy is done.

Assuming the Titans have no plans to play a WW/re-sign him game and he's truly gone with no Chase Rico like agreements...I think he is absolutely ideal to those reserve/future contracts that begin near Dec 1st. Those are tiny contracts that basically means they'll have the guy during the offseason. They also assure zero chance playing in 2015, all about 2016.

I'd like to see this guy after he's eaten some crow. Sitting almost a full season is a nice big helping. I don't know that it'll be with the Titans, but I will be curious of this guy in 2016

The Titans have re-signed Tavai.

They also got Lebeau a new toy. Kevin Greene, a former USC LB/DE that had been trying to convert to TE in the NFL.

It does appear Tavai gets paid twice from them this year. Injury Settlement must be locked in or somesuch

Presser today was about Panthers, earlier about Mariota being AFC O player of the week, very bland

Well apparently the reporters cornered him for more info because stream is gone and he said "thank you" and left the podium but tweets show they're still chatting.

McCluster to replace Lewan as captain. Did not hear so I don't know why.

Sankey could be inactive this week.

Mentioned Wright and Douglas as emergency QBs, I recall Andrews was in OTAs too

I would rather watch Douglas, Wright, Andrews at QB than Whitehurst. I mean if in one game, they're onto their 3rd QB it probably isn't going well so...

Well, this OL's overall talent level is pretty low. If MM gets hurt and has to miss some subsequent week(s), they're going into that game with Mett and no backup? 3 QBs is typically too much, but makes sense with this OL.

ETA: I just checked and no QB on the practice squad, either. Hopefully it won't matter. Fingers crossed.

After last year, won't you be annoyed if Casey AND Morgan don't each get sacks rushing against Oher?

McCourty could be done for year.

Mularkey ruled out Jason McCourty (groin) on Thursday, and on Friday said the veteran cornerback is weighing his options. McCourty will either have a second surgery after getting opinions on his injury, or he’ll continue rehab.

McCourty was in the locker room on Friday.

“I am still compiling information is how I would phrase it,’’ McCourty said. “I don’t think it will be a tough decision for me – it will probably be cut and dry. It will most likely be decided for me.”

In 6 games played, Mariota has just 11 rushing attempts for 77 yards. This might be a good game to test that chapter of the playbook. I'm sure their #1 priority is keeping him upright, but just a little bit of a running threat might hold off the pass rush a bit.
Of all the games the Titans have played, I'd least want to test MM's running against this group of linebackers.

I like his chances better running than standing still behind that O-Line.

If someone could put this under Mularkey's windshield wiper, I'd appreciate it:

CROOM ON FOWLER

On why the Titans wanted him: "We're looking for a blocking back. We think that's a key part of developing a solid running game. We want to get back to doing that, but you have to find that individual who has the size to do it, and he must also be a good special-teams player and must be able to catch the football."

On what makes him special: "A normal fullback — if you're just in a fullback role — will probably play only 12-15 plays a game, and then special teams plays as well. But this guy is a very good receiver. He has excellent hands. He also runs the ball well. ... He moves around. He can play what we call the 'F' tight end (similar to H-back). He can go outside, line up as a wide receiver and run routes out there. They threw him the football (at Alabama). So he's got a lot of versatility and things he can do."

On why he might be so important for the Titans: "We as a staff felt that there were a lot of situations in games — short-yardage and goal-line, backed up near your end zone, inside the opponents' 10-yard line, at the end of game when you've got a lead — where you want to run the football.

"The defense is going to put eight guys in the box, one more guy than you can block. The only way to handle that successfully is to have a fullback in the game — where you can call runs that you don't have to check out of. Because you don't want to put pressure on the quarterback to have to check to get you in the right run, or to use a throw when you want to keep the clock running.

"That's when football really comes down to must-run situations, and that's where a guy like (Fowler) can make a huge difference for us, especially if he can handle the football as a runner or receiver. Just having enough confidence in him to be able to call a play where he can run five yards, catch a flat route and get a first down — that can be the difference in closing out a ballgame."

fair point.

Talk of new coach replacing Lebeau with new DC starting already....

Obviously the HC will have to have final word on who his DC is going to be. But to come in and NOT want Lebeau seems odd.

The Lebeau/Horton combo I could see might be an issue, and there might be something in the dynamics and roles there that would become problematic.

Honestly I don't want any HC that doesn't want he and Horton.

Last year on a horrible team we saw all sort of fronts and creativity (that failed) but geesh it was so clear Horton was trying anything he could. This year, he has totally been a "team player" accepting his demotion and contributing.

We're halfway through and they're a top 3 defense. How is that possible? I don't care if it's not perception just statistics, the results are still that Lebeau is a magician. The longer the season wears on the harder for them to statistically drop in rankings. At this point, they'd need to be blown out a few times to finish outside the top ten.

"Steelers south" nickname is somewhat true and I have had no problem with that. Parts of their staff are quite experienced and they're fortunate to have them like a former HC stepping in to coach right now. I respect that team and their image, continuity, and tradition. There's parts that matchup real well with Fisher's and as you can see Munchak is adored in Pitt.

Titans fans and Steelers fans have always appreciated the high effort excellent work ethic types, regardless if they're the best players.

The very best solution is for the billionaires to throw a ton of money at Cowher.

Someone mentioned Fisher might not be so inclined to move to Cali assuming the Rams go...he's like an ex-wife now, thanks for the memories had some good times, moved on.

Neither of these are reasonable so I'm starting to lean back toward keeping Mularkey. I can't think of another Steeler coach.

It's very important that the new coach re-connect with their alumni that Whis seemed to disconnect from outside of Eddie George. Not only is the idea of former players helping current ones a good one, but the community seems to really appreciate this too and they're falling in fan support.

I don't much care for the OL coach and thought he was a terrible hire day one. He has not proven me wrong. Today that is my only coaching concern. Bruce Matthews was not re-signed for 2015 and Roos has spoken of wanting to coach. That'd be perfect right there IMO. Easy too. And without asking, I don't imagine any prob if the owner asked any of these Steeler coaches about adding a HOF lineman to coach OL.

What is a very real possibility and almost terrifies me, is the notion of being the Cleveland Browns and always rebuilding and always replacing decent talent with rookie talent. That franchises rarely takes a step forward. And I'd like to think Titans fans would riot if they spoke of trading a pro bowl C and pro bowl T in another rebuild like Cleveland did.

Whitehurst is gone, Douglas is overpaid, but McCluster is effective and most of the "Whisenhunt boys" are not a problem where they need to clean house with them. It mattered to me, as you saw here, but on the radio shows a few players mentioned it too- Tavai coming back was significant. You don't cut the hardest working UDFA that worked his way up the depth chart to fill in for your starter thru OTAs and some of camp. Lewan playing terribly, not saying the best things after, and losing his captain title. Zach Brown benched for mouthing off on twitter and overpursuit. Riggs getting a chance and keeping a spot because of results. You can see Mularkey trying to show the team oh so clearly what he appreciates.

That's all totally fine with me and all I want in rebuilding. Lewan will be fine. He can take it on the chin for now. I have no worries of him. Poutasi is 21 and I love that he got benched and responded by helping Looney. No doubt, in time, he'll be starting again. He's young he can handle the process.

No one mentioned Hunter's game but he handled the Saints DBs very well and it is starting to look like post Whis he's going to "breathe" and we shall see there.

Everything doesn't have to be favorable and I'm not under any illusion they're a top team that doesn't need changes, but I want changes created by competition not a new coach's ego.

No one around the NFL blinked when Mett took over this year. Did you notice? All of the flack from last year was gone. I enjoy him but there is no reason to have a chip like that on the sideline. They can get a decent backup QB cheaply. In trade, Mett could offer a new coach something in return that he covets. Mett for a RB or Mett for a pick or Mett for a G or....

Lebeau and this season's results may actually attract free agents for a change.

Just don't become Cleveland south

From Ask Jim

I agree – keeping the defensive staff together is important. And I think it’s one of the reasons Mularkey has a solid chance to land the job on a permanent basis if things go well. Keeping Mularkey probably gives the team the best chance to keep **** LeBeau and Ray Horton.

Also

Question: Would there be any reason to keep Bishop Sankey on the roster if David Cobbperforms well in the coming weeks?

Wyatt: I can’t see the Titans parting ways with Sankey any time soon. He was a second-round pick last season, and what happens if one of the top backs gets injured? This is an area where a team needs insurance, and after releasing Terrance West last week, the Titans don’t have a lot of it right now.

Just wanted to do the FBG board thing and remind folks how I got flack for promoting Andrews this offseason

Can't believe Hunter just has a fractured ankle.

His foot was 90 degrees rotated from his leg.

There's pics of him on the cart in a boot that they hurriedly put on and there was no scene from the show ER where they popped it into place, but it is straight there.

Avery Williamson was pretty great yesterday.

It's about like last season too where there's moments he is the only one on the field getting it done and I'm wishing someone would help the guy.

I don't like this "WR was in error on that play" every time Mariota throws an INT. As someone else pointed out, MM hasn't been "credited" with an INT in over a month by coaches.

Also, I'm not sure I like last three starts last three times coaches have said illegal hit on MM.

Fins player was fined-I get that one.

Mariota takes it on the chin and always does the good boy it was my fault routine. Coach and OC need to let some things be, starting to look like pampering cry-babies.

Let the rook drink it all in and experience it. He says and does all the right things. The last thing I want is them changing him so next year he's blaming the WRs every time and crying about hits.

I missed Mularkey monday presser, don't think it was viewable on site.

Practice is tonight so I doubt there's a presser after

Today is my birthday

The Titans made me GM for a day so, since Tavai was brought back last week, I brought back Turzilli and Yannick this week.

Since I like big hitting CBs, I also signed a CB named Shaq. I don't know anything about him but everyone named Shaq is good, right?

This is totally not true but I know fubar, cstu, and some of the guys will chuckle. So weird it happened on my bday.

Honestly, my guess is posturing for Webster.

What? Oh no Tavai, Turzilli, and Yannick were very good in camp, they've been here. What do you mean Mrs. Adams? Or It was Ken's fault, I brought them back

TJ Yeldon wearing a boot says he'll be fine for Thursday

PK-If Kendall Wright, who is recovering from a knee injury, is out, Harry Douglasand Dorial Green-Beckham will rank as the top two guys, with Rico Richardsonlikely third.

The fourth will be one of two players signed Tuesday. Tre McBride, a seventh-round pick from their practice squad, or Andrew Turzilli, who was with them in camp and was signed from the 49ers' practice squad.

“I was with them throughout the entire rookie minicamp, through OTAs,” quarterback Marcus Mariota said. “So if their number is called, those guys will be ready. We’ll expect good things out of them.”

The collective inexperience won’t make for an imposing group. It isn’t one even when Wright and Justin Hunter, now on IR, are active.

Tennessee gets an average of 107.6 yards per game out of wide receivers
