Titans tight ends 2025 (1 Viewer)

Josh Whyle was a high school WR that played the TE position at Cincinnati like a former high school WR. He moved around which is notable but mostly slot and usual TE spot. The Titans very much wanted Ridder (doesn't matter what ya think of Ridder now) and had years of tape on Whyle and liked him the entire time. I think he also sometimes looks like a basketball player trying out for a football team.

He was to become a more traditional TE and challenge Chig, if not take his spot.

He's a definite good boy good teammate try hard guy.

He was awful blocking inline as a rookie and year two saw a significant improvement. He still couldn't handle the better edges. He was fine against the rest but the game, the nerves, the focus, ya can't let a name DE chuck you aside. That brings a lot of negative attention.

He has nice hands. He's made some key catches despite only a few in his career. It's evident the QBs trust those hands.

He'll box out and look uncomfortable. He'll try and use his bod near the sideline and look uncomfortable. He's got more of a "look I'm doing it, coach" vibe that should have gone away to where he's just simply doing it. There's something to this.

He's started and played more minutes than many seem to think. So far he's just a good guy that clearly is dedicated but he's not smooth and the learning period is not supposed to be long in the NFL.

One other note- he's Levis' friend and roommate in dorms. Rudolph loved him and pointed out that he's helpful in games saying things he sees.

There's a lot of good- not great- to like but it's at a point where ya wonder if he'll put it all together and actually look like a TE.

Chig needs to be traded and was to be (many reports) but it never happened.
He's as good an athlete as there is. If ya wanna say Pitts or someone else, fine, but you're going to look up combine stats or somesuch and say wow I didn't realize Chig was that athletic.

He's never developed as an inline blocker. He blocks well as a FB and lined out as a WR but inline...oof.
He doesn't box out. He doesn't use his bod near the sideline. He doesn't fight for the ball and show that focus traditional TEs do as a QB fires one in and somehow it gets to the TE.

He needs to be moved around...oddly enough like Whyle was in college. He IS too big and/or too fast for most but that's never materialized as an option for some reason.

For FF, every year probably, he lights up around midseason for 4 games or so on the stat column and people get excited. Ya shouldn't. He's lined out wide. He makes a catch where he didn't box out and runs away for a huge gain. He's got blazing speed for a TE. Before and after the Titans put him inline and pffff he fizzled out.

If he finally learns to block well and play the TE position well...that's the hope.
For me, he's as clear as I've ever seen someone needing a fresh start somewhere new

Odukoya is a camp legend of a blocker. He's an international player that they stopped using that tag on.
None of us know why he doesn't play when the RT next to him has been a poor blocker but ...he barely plays offense.
Without question one of the best blocking TEs there is. I've never seen a TE with so many pancake highlights and that's always been a sign of dominance.
I expect he'll knock down some edges in camp and preseason and we'll all say wow and then he won't play much.

His hands seem fine. Not good or great but fine. Some other team that uses two TEs would absolutely love this guy as the grunt blocking TE but teams don't seem to trade for that. Arthur Smith would be downright giddy if he had him.

Gunnar is a classic TE.
Do you like the athletic pretty TEs or the ones that play the position like a zillion others have? That's the question for Callahan...and maybe consequently FF people.

He's a rookie and although the desire is there for the position to be settled finally, he's probably going to take his lumps like they all do.

Lots of favorable reports and predraft writeups and all that. He's exactly what you picture when you picture a typical TE.

DMR is the dark horse, the sleeper, the lottery ticket and every other FF cliche we love.

The UDFA wasn't supposed to even make the team and he somehow stood out as a fifth TE.

He was to get a lot of work as the season closed, maybe even got a start. Callahan continually singled he and Oliver out as young guys he wanted to play more and then..he really didn't despite saying it every week.

He's been mentioned time and again by the staff. He's a somewhat common prediction by writers in some capacity- surprise starter, biggest improvement...he's got attention in Nashville.

I think he's the real deal. I just do. I'm overtired of hearing about this guy and that guy needing to develop this trait and he comes on the field and does everything well.

I wouldn't be surprised of anything here. Feast or famine predictions.

The ol drafted player rule is going to guarantee Gunnar gets X amount of practice time. How much does DMR get?
If it's a little, he could be buried. If it's a lot, I could see mid-year starter for him. Good boy Whyle is going to get snaps and do his best with good effort and it takes time for coaches to replace that.

I think DMR could be an intriguing dynasty pickup.

Sidenote- last summer when his name was getting out there and they were showing his college tape n all...I couldn't get over this "what are you looking for" vibe. What's the problem that he went undrafted? He's athletic AND plays the position the way it should be. What are scouts looking for nowadays? There's lots of videos too which is also- why? If he's a no name from Temple then why so many?

For dynasty I think we all always do much of the same. Go ahead and pickup whoever has to develop this one skill versus a total package guy.

Thanks for highlighting him. I honestly was not familiar with him. After 1 career reception, David Martin Robinson I don't know that he has earned the right to be known simply as "DMR". Perhaps he can carve out a bigger role, but he was not a big time producer in 6 seasons at Temple. I am just not seeing it. What gives you such optimism?

I don't know where the DMR moniker came from. Some time, maybe last spring?, I was wondering who he was too.

I think I mentioned it above. Not to be snooty just idk what more I can say.
He was not supposed to make the team, stood out and then he's playing and...that's a fast progression.

I can't think of a Titans writer that hasn't discussed him. Pick a writer really.

Recently Wyatt had him as someone to watch on the radio and he says he's a big fan of his in his mailbag column this week.

Here's Google AI summary:
Brian Callahan, the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, has given a positive assessment of undrafted free agent tight end David Martin-Robinson (DMR). He has called DMR a "poster child" for UDFA success, highlighting his consistent improvement and ability to make plays. Callahan believes DMR is deserving of a roster spot and could be a productive tight end in the passing game.
Here's a more detailed look at Callahan's comments and the context:
Positive Comments:
Callahan has repeatedly praised DMR's development and performance throughout the preseason. He has noted DMR's ability to learn and improve, as well as his knack for making plays.
"Poster Child" for UDFA:
Callahan's description of DMR as the "poster child" for UDFA success suggests he believes DMR has made a significant impression and exceeded expectations for an undrafted player.
Roster Spot and Potential:
Callahan believes DMR deserves a spot on the 53-man roster and has the potential to be a valuable contributor in the Titans' passing game.
Screen Play Emphasis:
Callahan has also discussed the importance of screen plays in the Titans' offense, and he has been experimenting with creative ways to incorporate DMR into these plays.
Competition for TE4 Spot:
While DMR has a strong case, he will likely compete with other tight ends like Thomas Odukoya for the TE4 spot, potentially impacting the final roster.

Here's the mailbag-
Jim: Hey Landon. Gunnar Helm is just settling in. I actually wrote a story on him this week: CLICK HERE to read it.
I think he's going to be a good player, but it could take him some time to get adjusted. Plus, he has guys like Chig Okonkwo and Josh Whyle ahead of him at the start, and I'm a big fan of David Martin-Robinson as well. All those guys, along with Thomas Odukoya, should be better with another year under their belts.

Last August-
-Callahan had very positive things to say about a pair of undrafted free agents – tight end David Martin-Robinson and receiver Bryce Oliver. Callahan said both players have made great strides. He called Martin-Robinson the "poster child" for what it takes to make the team as a UDFA. "He's really ascended," Callahan said of DMR. "Every chance he's gotten, he's gotten better. Every chance he's had to make a play, he's made it. He's been fantastic."

DMR with three catches, a highlight from Ward and...he was probably the best TE in shorts today according to all I read.

TE coach said they don't want niche TEs and want complete players. Pretty much reiterating what's said every off-season.

Gunnar had CBs on him and two passes knocked away. Figure it out kid, vibe.

Probably 3-4 passes per TE.
