Yeah I wasn't really into the weapons building in FO 3 and haven't even considered it yet in NV. I did one in FO3 because I was at the table in my house and I had one of the things highlighted with the crap I had collected from a run around. I forgot what it was but it was supposed to shoot whatever junk you found around. I never used it. It's still in my Megaton house. Just not my cup of tea unless I am forced to do it.

Yeah that is the rocket thing. I never built that but I have the upgraded plans for it.

That's a very difficult battle to win. I think I did it once but it took me a bunch of tries
Yeah, I also find it's best not to piss the Legion off too much early on. As others have said their death squads are a PITA. I got them on me early the my first game and just got beat down until I weaponed and leveled up. I also didn't find companions very early that first game, so it was just me on them, f-ing ouch.

Thanks. I didn't know I could copy the books so I'll have to look into that.
You have to do the BIG MT DLC for that -I forget what i's called but it's calling you to an abandoned drive in theatre - but don't go before you are pretty high level

What things do you guys find it's best to hoard the entire game for use in constructing stuff?

For me in FO3

Bottlecap mine:

cherry bombs

lunchbox

sensor module

Nuka grenade:

Abraxo cleaner

Nuka-Cola Quantum (and all Nuka Cola since you can convert them to Quantum late in the game)

Tin Can (bent ones don't work, must be "tin can")

Turpentine

Other weapons like the dart gun can be nice, but you just need to make 1 and then keep it in repair, so not like I need every surgical tubing in the game for dart guns.
In NV I pretty much collect everything and leave it in a locker in Lucky 38. But I mostly make weapon repair kits

I just couldn't get into the weapon building really. I did the one with the railroad spikes and I did the sword.
I find the bottlecap mines and nuka grenades worthwhile because their damage is pretty high compared to frag mines and grenades.

Also, I recall the dart gun was great for death claws. Shoot him in the legs and it really slows him down. Other than that I didn't find the other things useful.

Haven't played New Vegas in awhile so couldn't remember the details there, but I know I used to hoard wrenches and everything else that goes into repair kits. Cooking I never found a use for. I almost never use chems, and I don't recall the stuff you could cook being better in bonuses. There might be something you can make that is worthwhile, but if so I never investigated them far enough to know it.

I always play hardcore in NV so you need to do some cooking occasionally. My diet normally consists of gecko or brahmin steaks though.

I generally make gecko steaks if I've picked up some meat but really don't have any use for the hides. But I compulsively pick all the greens around. Sometimes I make cactus water (purified water)

Now that you guys mention it, I might have tanned hides for money for awhile, though... my memory's faulty, not sure if it was worth more than what it took to make them.

Though before long I stopped since I had enough weapons to arm China sitting in containers waiting for me to sell them, so money wasn't an issue.

Don't get why people don't use meds? They're great in a tough fight. IIRC Med-X gives you damage reduction, Psycho gives you extra damage and Jet gives you extra AP to use. If you are doing hand to hand buffout is also great. Mentats when you don't quite have the skills to do something...

I really only used Stims in FO3 but in NV you can be addicted to stims. I never had that happen in 3. Forgot I also used Rad-X of course. That was about it.

Just rarely need them. Generally sneak and have a good weapon skill. Sneaking means a critical hit if not detected yet. Most everything dies in one shot to the head at close range. Long range I snipe manually and tend to kill before they fire back.

Not a lot of fights where I even take damage.

Interesting. I don't know if I have the patience to go the sniper route most of the time. I'm also finding that in NV the PipBoy doesn't immediately designate someone as bad the way it did in FO3. Like that assassination squad was yellow until right before the started talking to me to tell me they were there to kill me.

I can see the perverse pleasure in the sniper route though. Although that would lead me back to the karma problem - if you really are doing the sniper thing the very point of a sniper is not being detected so there shouldn't be any karma hit or increase but again... not a worthy nitpick.

I sneak and snipe usually the first time through but any other playthroughs that gets a bit old and I like to go in guns, fists or machete blazing

Melee is also way underrated. I was actually able to end the Mr. House quest the first time I met him at a very low level. Chainsaws make short work of robots.

A lot of the additional wrinkles in NV are designed for hardcore mode which can be challenging. Cooking and chems can be pretty important to keep you alive especially since stimpaks only heal over time and dont fix crippled limbs. Companions die and die a lot. Making ammo is pretty important since everything has weight so you cant be a walking depository of every type of ammo and switch between weapons on the fly when you run low on one type of ammo. Putting points into Endurance and Strength and the Survival skill are more important as well.

Karma isn't dependent on someone seeing you do it. The "universe" knows. I agree wholeheartedly that your reputation with any particular faction shouldn't suffer though.

Found my first book finally. I can never remember to use magazines when I need them.

Got fisted by a sexbot and can't feel my legs.

Have Boone waiting for me while I run around Freeside doing a bazillion small local side quests.

Found my second snow globe! This gives me much more satisfaction than it should. Looking forward to finding more (and no thank you I don't want to know where they are)

Thinking about starting over on hardcore and relying on survival skills. Gonna map out which perks I want and the reqs for each and take the plunge.

I don't think I'm ready for hardcore but I will follow your progress with much interest.

So far hardcore is a lot of fun. You need to eat, drink, and sleep, and there are some minor other changes like some heals work over time and not immediately. The biggest impact so far has simply been to my starting build - by putting more points into survival (to open up some of the campfire recipes) I had far fewer points go into my usual items like guns, lockpick, repair, etc. As I level I'm putting more points into Med and Repair to hit certain thresholds at the workbench. So this has all changed my style of play for the better since what I liked most about FO3 was the scrounging/surviving aspect of the early game. I'm making more of a mental note where to sleep for free and actually making use of food items instead of automatically selling everything.

Has zero impact on my perk choices though. Scrolled through them all with the new effects and still either "must have" or not at all interested in each perk.

Still early on - just cleared out the bison casino in Primm but it really felt like an accomplishment. Getting ready to fix up Ed-E and head back to the prison...

Sounds fun.

I found Nipton last night. Bought the room. So ill probably make that my home so I have to start moving everything from Goodsprings down there. Will take a few trips.

Have to solve Boones case as well.

I started the game over. I hit about level 10 or so, and it was the same thing that I usually have as far as stats and stuff. Had more time to play last night, so I thought I would start again. Think I only did 4 in strength. Figured I could do a couple on level up, and when I have companions I don't need to have as much carrying power anyway.

I never seem to have caps in the games I play and never focus on speech, so I am going to go the opposite. Pumping a lot of stats into Barter, Repair, and Speech right away. Probably overkill with Barter and repair, but why not. Intelligence was 9, Luck was 8, and I think Charisma was 8. End and Perception were next to nothing. Not into the cooking/survival part, and if I get Ed-E I didn't think Perception would be an issue.

Since I will be weak in the fighting at the beginning, thought I would stick to the main quests, pump up my Repair to get Ed-E and make a beeline for Novac to bring Boone on board. Then we will go rid the Wastelands of wrongdoers. I will have fun with them for a bit and probably try going solo after a while. Jumped the luck up since I will need help with criticals at first, and I assume it won't hurt at the Casinos. Stopped last night just outside of Novac with enough stats to go back to get Ed-E, but if I remember right I might need one more sensor module. It is at night, so I will probably go have a chat with Boone right away.

A little FO3 time this morning. Went ahead with the alien abduction.

Paulson's atttitude got annoying and so he was downsized from Team Lone Wanderer in a literal reduction of head count. Morale is up 20%.

Boone and Ed-e together...... priceless.

Spent a ton of time in the factory outside novac clearing ghouls and blue super mutants. I convinced the human he was human but also to help the ghouls anyway. So we are finding parts for the rockets.

But my trio right now is almost unbeatable. I want to go raid some legion bases and have some fun.

Almost too awesome.

Got them last night. went back to the prison and smoked everybody quickly. same wirh the Legion camp on the way to Novac. Personally, I think NV made a mistake with companions in that:

1. they cant die except on Hardcore.

2. you get the xp for their kills.

before I fired a shot at the camp, one was sniped by boone, one was on fire from ed-e. fun as hell, but 0 to worry about if they cant die.

They can faint at damn inconvenient times, though

Took a few minutes to play with the lighting stuff. While I've loved having the green tint removed and 95% of the time the Fellout mod has been great, those occasions where it makes it pitch black between midnight and 2 am got too frustrating.

Uninstalled it (simple as highlight it in Nexus Mod Manager and click the uninstall button) and am going to give F3ProjectRealityMkI a try instead after seeing a review of it and Fellout and some weather mods in a video. It removes the green tint as well, and then has a bunch of configurable weather. Rain, fog, even nuclear winter snow. Saw the rain and it was pretty cool. The snow I disabled mainly because it felt out of place, too random. If it snowed in certain in game months and had actual winter I might like it.

There's some other stuff it has too, like the rain can be radioactive so you have to seek shelter. There is also a heat haze effect that will kick on hot days and in certain locations. All of that stuff you can turn on or off from in the game. It gives you an article of clothing, if you equip it, it brings up a menu where you can toggle all the different effects on or off. Also has 3 different levels of increased darkness at night, or you can disable it and go with usual darkness but minus the green tint.

Two fun events from Friday night. Wandering around the northwest and fought another group of raiders.

One of them, VATS paused the game right as he was shooting a missile launcher at me. I target his head like normal, and as I am hitting the button to execute my VATS attack, it occurs to me, "That missile he shot is shaped kind of like a mini-nuke".

Next thing you know...

Left Paradise Falls and turned right and headed up the road into the hills above it. There is a long line of cars like they were abandoned in a traffic jam.

Two Yao Guai attack from the other side of the cars. Charon decides it would be a great idea to start shooting them, and the cars, with his shotgun.

I saw the first car catch fire and just turned and ran. The whole screen went white and yellow and I think my computer made the loudest sound that it's ever played as the first car went up and set off a chain reaction that took all the other cars with it.

When the fire and smoke clears, Charon is just standing there amidst the debris like nothing happened. I walk back over and he says, "... this place is not safe...."

No #### Charon.

Really? ive been wasting stimpacks on boone then. We just activated helios one. I did what the ncr wanted. Also helped the ghouls take off. Didnt have enough to play with the navigation though. What does that do?

Pretty sure I saw something pop up a couple years ago when I played more about Boone being unconscious. Never died on me, which is probably why I was so surprised when Dogmeat and Jericho bit in when I was playing FO3.

If I remember, the navigation just made them lauch straight instead of flying into each other.

Gives different end video

So after a few weeks of looking at my XB One like this :kicksrock: I caved and bought the FO3 GOTY edition from Steam for PC.

I'm L5 now, have done the first chapter of the Wasteland Survival Guide, disarmed the bomb, cleared out Minefield and killed Arkansas for the Sniper Rifle and done some general exploring and scavenging in the south west. I went to the Scrapyard for Dogmeat, then console hacked him to be Essential, so if he dies, he just pops back up after the fight.

Been playing around with some mods, I have Fellout (looks so much better minus the green tint), the unofficial patch, large memory hack, Megaton house overhaul ( :bag: ). I tried the Wanderer's Edition (FWE) patch, but getting #####ed at to eat and sleep all the time made me uninstall that. I tried the large version of the NMC texture pack but had issues with running out of memory again (which I hadn't had since enabling the >2GB memory flag) so that's gone as well. I might try one of the smaller sized texture packs later on, it did improve the look of things quite a bit.

I need some more trading options, so I'm going to do some more exploring in the south / southwest then try and get to Rivet City by going down the riverbank.

####, I really need to learn how to save more.

Got to Boulder City and took care of business there, then took off towards Vegas. Was having fun getting things marked on my map and blasting the #### out of Fiends. Of course, I was out in the open so there were no autosaves. Got caught in a Plasma and Laser rifle crossfire from some Fiends and got killed. Over an hour and a level-up was thrown out as my last save was at Boulder City.

I guess on the bright side, that means I get to do twice the Fiend killing.

Funny I just cleared boulder as well. Convinced them with a speech check to give up so no shooting though. NCR loves me now.

I'm level 12. Debating ignoring the main quest and hitting some of the DLC's for awhile but I have to admit that loosing EDe and Boone to do them is not something I look forward to.

Ed-E is a coward. Went to attack some Legion folks and he gets "stuck" in some rocks - halfway out like he's peering over the top. Went with Boone and discovered when I asked him to "wait" at the top of the hill, the legion was no longer red enemy marks on my compass. Sneak down, rescue two captives, sneak back, ask Boone to follow me again, and the camp goes back to red. They were grouped, so the grenade launcher came in handy. All dead and look who shows up, Ed-E.

Love playing hardcore but you definitely don't need survival skills for it. Although I'm having fun at the campfires, the biggest things I need are Dr Bags and Weapon Repair Kits, and you only need Med and Repair skills for those. It's fun keeping an eye on food, drink, & sleep - radiation isn't really an issue - but limb damage is a b####. You get to know where the doctors are and they now play a role in the game.

Damn deathclaws on the walk to New Vegas. Killed me 6 times before i got through. Made it to Fort McCarron. First guy i talked to was the Sargent with the bounties. Did them. Got lucky and nabbed 2 at the same time. Did the gold club guy last. He was the suck. But i have his club now.

I did the same thing, except I was right in the middle of the traffic when it started. I saw the car the baddies were hiding behind catch on fire and thought "Cool! That car's going to blow them to-"

I did all the bounties and I expected him to be really hard he was actually easier than the dog lady. Did you get the snipers from the Fort involved? He was half dead before I could even get a clean shot.

Sounds like maybe the Legion doesnt hate you yet. Do they send deathsquads after you? Boone (for obvious reasons) will attack and be attacked by the Legion on sight.
